AEGIR
STEREO OR MONO CONTINUITY™ POWER AMP
IN NORSE MYTHOLOGY, AEGIR WAS THE LORD OF THE OCEAN.
AND NO, THAT DOESN’T MEAN OUR AEGIR IS LIQUID-COOLED.
NOR WILL OUR AEGIR NECESSARILY HAVE NINE DAUGHTERS.
BUT AEGIR MAY MAKE SOME WAVES OF ITS OWN.
SINCE IT’S OUR FIRST CONTINUITY ™ SPEAKER AMP.
OWNER’S MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
Aegir is, depending on your point of view, either (1) a breakthrough in constant-transconductance amplification that extends the benefits of Class A operation and offers a unique solution for the mismatch between N and P output devices with our Continuity™ technology, or (2) a hotter-running, lower-power version of Vidar. In either case, if you find yourself in possession of an Aegir, this manual will help you understand how to get the most out of it.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX
(1) Aegir
(1) Power cord
(0) Stick-on feet (they’re screwed in)
**** The following is required by the roughly 9,542 government agencies and regulations we have to comply with. If you have some common sense, they should seem pretty straightforward. In any case, read these instructions before proceeding further, follow all instructions, and heed all warnings. Or else!
- If you don’t know how to install audio devices, get a qualified professional to help.
- Never use this device near water, and clean only with a dry cloth.
- Assure adequate ventilation, do not block any ventilation openings or place them near heat sources.
- Use only the supplied power cord or a suitable replacement. Route cords away from traffic areas and protect them from being pinched. Unplug the cord from the outlet if the apparatus is unused for a long period of time.
- To prevent electric shock, do not use the plug with an extension cord, receptacle, or outlet unless the blades can be fully inserted.
- Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Service is required when the device has been damaged, including cord or plug damage, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the device, the device has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS DEVICE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE.
STEREO CONNECTION
- Right and Left Speaker Outputs. When using Aegir as a stereo amp, connect your right speaker to the right red and black output terminals and your left speaker to the left red and black output terminals.
- RCA Inputs. Similarly, connect your source (usually a preamp) using high-quality RCA cables—right into the input marked “R”, and left into the input marked “L”.
- AC Input. Connect to a wall socket with the provided AC cord. Or you can use any IEC-type cord; ours isn’t special.
- Power Switch. Up is on. Down is off. Pretty simple. You can leave Aegir on all the time if you’d like, and save power by putting it in Standby mode using the button on the front.
MONO CONNECTION
1 and 2 Speaker Outputs. When using Aegir as a mono amp, connect your speaker
to the two top red terminals only. Right is “+”, and left is “-”. Please note
both of these are active outputs—do not ground one of them!
3 XLR Input. Connect a balanced source (usually a preamp) using a high-quality
XLR cable. It’s important that the preamp is truly balanced for proper
operation.
4 AC Input. Connect to a wall socket with the provided AC cord. Or you can use
any IEC-type cord; ours isn’t special.
5 Power Switch. Up is on. Down is off. Pretty simple. Feel free to leave the
amp on all the time if you’d like.
OPERATION
-
Standby/Alert Light. When this light is on, Aegir is in Standby mode—the amp is muted and the output stage is de-biased. This light also serves as an alert light. It flashes during self-check on startup and flashes if there is a fault.
-
Standby Button. Press this button to put Aegir in Standby mode and reduce power draw. Press again to take Aegir out of Standby mode for normal use.
Operate Light. When this light is on, Aegir is in Operate mode (that is, it will play music when fed a musical signal from an appropriate source.) -
Heatsinks. These get plenty hot when in use. Ensure there’s plenty of space on either side of the amp and good ventilation above. If your home is particularly warm (like 30C and above), you may need to use additional cooling—like, you know, a fan —to avoid thermal shutdown).
CLEARING FAULTS
Okay, so you have a flashing light. Deep breath. We’ll get this taken care of
shortly.
When Aegir’s front right light flashes during operation (and the amp mutes),
or if it never stops flashing after you turn on the amp, there’s a problem, or
fault. There are three
kinds of faults:
-
Over-temperature. The heatsinks are too hot, and Aegir has shut down to protect its output. If the amp is very hot, turn it off, wait a while for it to cool down, and try turning it on again. Aegir runs very high standing bias and runs very hot; in very warm homes (30 degrees C/85 degrees F, for example), you may need to use a fan for
additional cooling to avoid overtemperature shutdown. -
Over-current. It’s unlikely that Aegir will run into over-current protection playing almost any speaker, but if the speaker cables are shorted, or there is an internal fault in the speaker, you may run into over-current protection.
To troubleshoot this, turn off the amp, disconnect the speaker cables from the amp, and turn it back on again. If it comes back on, there may be a shortage in your speaker cables (or your speakers). Examine your connections to ensure there are no stray wires or shorts. Once those have been fixed, you can reconnect the speakers and play music again. -
High DC offset. Aegir is a DC-coupled amp. Its microprocessor monitors DC levels at the output and adjusts it down to zero. However, it may not be able to correct for high DC from your source (such as a preamp). To clear this fault, turn off the amp, disconnect the RCA cables or XLR cable from the amp, and turn it back on again. If the
amp turns on normally, then there may be high DC on the output of your source. Have the source inspected and repaired.
