Product Information

The Bosch GAL18V-160C Battery Charger is designed to charge Bosch or AMPShare rechargeable batteries. It is important to follow the safety instructions listed in the user manual to avoid any potential hazards. The charger should be used in temperatures above +32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and below +113 degrees F (45 degrees C) and should be stored in locations where temperatures will not exceed 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). The charger should not be used with attachments not recommended by Bosch. The battery pack should not be stored in the charger for a long period of time.

Product Usage Instructions

1. Read all instructions and warning markings on the battery charger, battery pack, and product using battery before using the battery charger.
2. Make sure the battery pack case is not cracked before inserting it into the charger.
3. Insert the battery pack into the charger until it clicks into place.
4. Plug the charger into a power outlet.
5. The charger will automatically detect the battery type and begin charging.
6. Once the battery is fully charged, unplug the charger from the power outlet and remove the battery pack from the charger.

Note: Do not use the battery pack if its case is cracked or if damage is detected on the battery charger, cable, plug, or battery pack. Do not open the battery charger or battery pack yourself. Take it to a Bosch Factory Service Center or qualified serviceman using original replacement parts.

Safety Symbols

The definitions below describe the level of severity for each signal word. Please read the manual and pay attention to these symbols.

Charger Safety Rules

1. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS – This manual contains important safety and operating instructions for Bosch battery and AMPShare battery charger model GAL18V-160C. Do not substitute any other charger.

2. Before using battery charger, read all instructions and warning markings on (1) battery charger, (2) battery pack, and (3) product using battery.

3. CAUTION – To reduce the risk of injury, charge only Bosch or AMPShare rechargeable batteries listed on page 6. Other types of batteries may burst causing personal injury and damage.

4. Charge battery pack in temperatures above +32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and below +113 degrees F (45 degrees C). Store tool and battery pack in locations where temperatures will not exceed 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). This is important to prevent serious damage to the battery cells.

5. Do not recharge battery in damp or wet environment. Do not expose charger to rain or snow. Water entering battery charger may result in electric shock or fire.

6. Never submerge battery pack, tool or charger in fluid of any kind or allow fluid to enter them. Corrosive or conductive fluid (such as seawater or
   industrial chemical or bleach containing products, etc.) can cause short circuit which may result in fire, personal injury and property damage.

7. Battery leakage may occur under extreme usage or temperature conditions. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. The battery liquid is caustic and could cause chemical burns to tissues. If liquid comes in contact with skin, wash quickly with soap and water. If the liquid contacts your eyes, flush them with water for a minimum of 10 minutes and seek medical attention.

8. Place charger on flat nonflammable surfaces and away from flammable materials when recharging battery pack. Carpeting and other heat insulating surfaces block proper air circulation which may cause overheating of the charger and battery pack. If smoke or melting of the charger or battery pack is observed, unplug the charger immediately and do not use the battery pack or charger. Contact customer service immediately.

9. Make sure cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or otherwise subjected to damage or stress. Damaged plug and cord may result in electric shock or fire.

10. Disconnect the charger by pulling the plug rather than the cord. Do not operate charger with damaged cord or plug; have them replaced immediately. Damaged plug or cord may result in electric shock or fire.

11. Do not insert battery pack in charger if battery pack case is cracked. Using damaged battery pack may result in electric shock or fire.

12. Do not disassemble charger or operate the charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped or otherwise damaged in anyway. Incorrect reassembly or damage may result in electric shock or fire.

13. Before each use, check the battery charger, cable, plug and battery pack. Do not use if damage is detected. Never open the battery charger or battery pack yourself, take it to a Bosch Factory Service Center, or qualified serviceman only using original replacement parts. Incorrect reassembly or using damaged product may result in electric shock or fire.

14. Do not use attachments not recommended or sold by Bosch. Using attachments not recommended may result in electric shock or fire.

15. Do not store battery pack in charger. Battery pack stored in charger over a long period of time could lead to battery pack damage and fire.

16. Unplug charger from outlet before storage, attempting any maintenance or cleaning. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of electric shock or fire.

17. Keep the battery charger clean by wiping the charger housing with a damp cloth. Contamination may result in electric shock or fire.

18. Replace battery pack if a substantial drop in operating time per charge is observed. Battery pack may be nearing the end of its life.

Battery Care

• When batteries are not in tool or charger, keep them away from metal objects. For example, to protect terminals from shorting
• DO NOT place batteries in a tool box or pocket with nails, screws, keys, etc. Fire or injury may result.
• DO NOT PUT BATTERIES INTO FIRE or expose to high heat. They may explode.

Battery Disposal
Do not attempt to disassemble the battery or remove any component projecting from the battery terminals. Fire or injury may result. Prior to disposal, protect exposed terminals with heavy insulating tape to prevent shorting.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES
If equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the battery must be collected, recycled or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. “The EPA certified RBRC Battery Recycling Seal on the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery indicates Robert Bosch Tool Corporation is voluntarily participating in an industry program to collect and recycle these batteries at the end of their useful life, when taken out of service in the United States or Canada. The RBRC program provides a convenient alterative to placing used Li-ion batteries into the trash or the municipal waste stream, which may be illegal in your area. Please call 1-800-8-BATTERY for information on Li-ion battery recycling and disposal bans/restrictions in your area, or return your batteries to a Bosch Service Center for recycling. Robert Bosch Tool Corporation’s involvement in this program is part of our commitment to preserving our environment and conserving our natural resources.”

Extension Cords
AN EXTENSION CORD SHOULD NOT BE USED UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Use of improper extension cord could result in risk of fire and electrical shock. If an extension cord is used, make sure:

• a. The pins on plug of extension cord are the same number, size, and shape as those of plug on charger.
• b. The extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition.
• c. The wire size is large enough for AC ampere rating of charger as specified below:

• d. An extension cord is a temporary solution. Move the charger to a standard receptacle as soon as the job has been completed.

Important Charging Notes

1. The charger was designed to fast charge the battery only when the battery temperature is between 32˚F (0˚C) and 113˚F (45˚C). If the battery pack is too hot or too cold, the charger will not begin charging the battery.(This may happen if the battery pack is hot from heavy use). Once the battery temperature returns to its safe charging temperature, between 32°F (0°C) and 113°F (45°C), the charger will automatically begin charging.
2. A substantial drop in operating time per charge may mean that the battery pack is nearing the end of its life and should be replaced.
3. Remember to unplug charger during storage period.
4. If battery does not charge properly:
   • a. Check for voltage at outlet by plugging in some other electrical device.
   • b. Check to see if outlet is connected to a light switch which turns power “off” when lights are turned off.
   • c. Check battery pack terminals and charger connectors for dirt. Clean with cotton swab and alcohol if necessary.
   • d. If you still do not get proper charging, take or send tool, battery pack and charger to your local Bosch Service Center. See “Tools, Electric” in the Yellow Pages for names and addresses.

Note: Use of chargers or battery packs not sold by Bosch will void the warranty.

Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)
The lithium ion battery is protected against deep discharging by the “Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)”. When the battery is empty, the tool is switched off by means of a protective circuit. The battery is supplied partially charged. Completely charge the battery before using your cordless power tool for the first time. The lithium ion battery can be charged at any time, without reducing its service life. Interrupting the charging procedure does not damage the battery.

FCC Caution

The manufacturer is not responsible for radio interference caused by unauthorized modifications to this equipment. Such modifications could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

1. This device may not cause harmful interference, and
2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

This charger will only charge the following batteries:

• Bosch or AMPShare BAT600 – BAT650;
• Bosch or AMPShare WCBAT612 – WCBAT625;
• Bosch or AMPShare GBA18V000 – GBA18V999.

Assembly

GCY42 Connectivity Module Installation (sold separately)
To reduce the risk of injury read the operating instructions included with the Bosch GCY42 connectivity module. Operating instructions for GCY42 connectivity module include important information not covered in this manual. If GCY42 connectivity module is not purchased with the charger, or if the replacement of the module or the battery becomes necessary, please follow this procedure (See Fig. 2):

• Using a flat screwdriver or a coin, remove the cover A from the top of the unit, by turning it 1/4 turn counter-clockwise.
• If the charger is already equipped with the connectivity module, remove battery B, but do not remove connectivity module C.
• If the connectivity module is installed for the first time, remove the plastic placeholder D from the connectivity module compartment, and place the connectivity module C in the compartment observing correct orientation. Note: Store the placeholder D in a safe place. Reinsert the placeholder again if the communications module is removed.
• Next place new battery B on the top of the connectivity module with the “+” polarity facing up.
• Place cover A over the battery and turn it ¼-turn clockwise to lock using a flat screwdriver or a coin.

Wall mounting

• Use mounting hardware which is appropriate for the wall type and suitable for the weight of charger and heaviest battery pack. If the charger is installed without the correct hardware, the product may be unstable and cause property damage or personal injury.
• Do not wall mount the charger where the weight of the charger and battery cannot be supported. If the strength of the wall mount location is not sufficient to support the charger and battery, the charger can fall off and cause an injury.
• Check to be sure that there are no hidden live wires, water pipe, or gas pipe behind the mounting area. Cutting or drilling into any of these may cause serious injury or death.
• Do not mount the charger upside down or inverted. Improper mounting may cause property damage or personal injury.
• The charger can be mounted to a wall using wall mounting slots 8.
  • Locate the suitable mounting area on the wall. See Fig. 3 for proper mounting orientation.
  • Mark two points on a vertical line 3-25/64″ (86mm) apart.
  • Select the appropriate screws and anchors (if necessary) for the material of the wall.(Mounting hardware not included.)
  • Drill into wall with an appropriate drill bit. If anchors are to be used, follow anchor hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Screw in two round-head screws (not included) with a diameter of 13/64″ (5mm) to maximum 1/4″ (6.5mm) into wall or anchors. Leave approximately 1/8″ (3.3 mm) space between bottom of screw head and wall.
  • Position the charger wall mounting slots over the mounting screws. Push charger towards the wall and slide it down to secure charger to mounting screws.

Note: Make sure the charger is securely mounted and that it is tight against the wall. Adjust screw exposure as necessary to ensure the charger is flat against the wall.

Connectivity

USING ‘BOSCH TOOLBOX’ APP
Pairing requires the installation of the connectivity module GCY42 (sold separately). After pairing your charger with a mobile device you can adjust certain functions or check the status of the charger using Bosch Toolbox app. Changes made using the Bosch Toolbox app are confirmed on the charger by a flashing blue LED connectivity light.

• A. Help button – tapping this button will bring up help screen.

• B. Photo – tapping on the photo will let you customize the photograph of your product.

• C. Battery charge status – the number of green ‘batteries’ indicates the estimated charge level for the battery pack.

• D. Product nickname – tapping on the ‘pencil’ icon will let you customize the product nickname. You can also do it when changing the product photo.

• E. Connection status bar – Here you can see the connection (signal) strength indicated by vertical bars. You can use the toggle switch to disconnect the charger from you mobile device.

• F. Charging Modes adjustment slide – you can choose between three settings: ‘Max Lifetime’, Standard (middle), and “Power Boost”.

• G. Storage – activates storage charging mode.

• H. Charging Status – can be expanded (or collapsed) by tapping the down (or up) arrow to show the following:

  • Type – displays battery type.
  • Percent Full – displays battery charge level.
  • *Time Remaining –** displays time remaining for current charging mode.
  • *Battery Health –** displays battery condition: ‘Excellent’ (full performance), ‘Good’ (slightly reduced performance), and ‘Fair’ (replacement recommended).
  • *Last Charge –** indicates the date and time of the last charge of a battery previously charged on the connected charger. .

• I. Charging Complete Tone – when enabled, the charger will sound a tone indicating that charging stage is complete.

• J. Identify My Charger – Flashes the blue connectivity light on the charger

• K. Factory Reset toggle switch – you can reset charger settings back to factory default settings.

• L. Alerts – tapping the ‘alerts triangle’ will display any alerts received from the charger.

• M. Info button – displays charger information and specifications.

• This feature is only available when using batteries with advanced connectivity features identified in table on page 6.

Operating Instructions

Charging Battery Pack
Plug charger cord into your standard power outlet. With no battery pack inserted, the bottom LED on the battery charging indicator 7 is continuously lit green. This indicates the charger is receiving power and the charger is ready for operation. When you insert the battery pack into the charger 2. The charger’s green LED indicator light will begin to “BLINK”. Thanks to the intelligent charging process, the battery will be charged with optimal charge current depending on battery temperature, voltage and battery type. See chart on page 6 for approximate charging times with Standard charging mode and “Power Boost” charging mode. The factory default charging mode is the Standard charging mode. “Power Boost” charging mode can be activated by pressing the “Power Boost” button or using Bosch ToolBox app. Once the “Power Boost” charging is completed, the charging mode will be switched back to the default charging mode automatically. The default charging mode can be changed using the connectivity module GCY-42 (sold separately) and Bosch ToolBox app.

• SETTING THE DEFAULT CHARGING MODE
  There are 3 modes controlled by a slider bar in the Bosch ToolBox app: Power Boost, Standard, and Max Lifetime. Additionally, Storage Mode can be selected using a toggle The active charging mode can be set for a single charging event or it can be set as a default for all charging cycles. default. The app Charging Mode slider indicates the charging mode.

• IDENTIFICATION OF CHARGING MODES “POWER BOOST” MODE
  The “Power Boost” function charges batteries up to around 50% battery capacity in rapid charging mode. This means batteries are ready for use sooner than if charged using the Standard charging mode. If the battery remains in the charger, it automatically keeps charging in Max Lifetime Mode up to around 80% battery capacity. Rapid charging speeds vary for different battery types. Certain batteries are not capable of charging faster than the Standard charging mode. All batteries are limited to a maximum charge of around 80% with Power Boost mode active. See charging times and compatibilities in chart on page 6.

• STANDARD CHARGING MODE
  The battery is charged up to around 100% battery capacity. The Standard charging mode provides the best combination of fast charging time and full battery charge while optimizing the service life of the battery. Standard mode is active as the Factory Default. It is also set as active for a single charging event after deactivating “Power Boost” mode using the Power Boost button.

• MAX LIFETIME MODE
  The battery is charged up to around 80% battery capacity. This mode charges the battery more slowly and thereby significantly prolonging its service life. This mode can only be activated using the Bosch ToolBox app.

• STORAGE MODE
  The long-term storage mode is intended exclusively for extensive periods of storage (six months or more). The battery is charged up to only around 50% battery capacity so that it can be stored unused for a long time.
  Note: Charger will not discharge a battery to 50% capacity for storage. Before long term storage a battery with over 50% battery capacity should be discharged in a tool to 50%.
  This mode can only be activated using the Bosch ToolBox app.

• BATTERY COOLING (“ACTIVE AIR COOLING”)
  The fan control unit integrated into the charger monitors the temperature of the inserted battery. As soon as the battery temperature is above approx. 32 °F (0 °C), the battery will be cooled by a fan.

• “Power Boost” button
  Pressing the “Power Boost” button 6 activates the “Power Boost” charging mode (rapid charging). The button can be pressed either before or after the battery has been inserted into the charger. The “Power Boost” button lights up red when the “Power Boost” charging mode (rapid charging) is enabled. Pressing on the “Power Boost” button again returns the charger to the Standard Charging Mode. Once the rapid charge has finished (at around 50% battery capacity), the light on the “Power Boost” button will turn off and the battery will continue to charge up to around 80% battery capacity. Only compatible batteries are able to rapid charge in “Power Boost” mode. See table on page 6 for approximate charging times with “Power Boost” mode.

Indicator Lights

• CHARGING INDICATOR
  In standby mode, the bottom LED on the battery charging indicator 7 is continuously lit green. The five green LEDs indicate the battery’s state of charge during and after charging. Each continuously lit LED represents a battery capacity of approximately 20%. Each flashing LED represents the maximum level of charge that will be achieved in the current charging mode.“Power Boost” mode (first 50%) three LEDs lit (continuous or flashing). Lifetime Mode and second stage of “Power Boost” mode (50%- 80%) four LEDs lit (continuous or flashing). Standard mode five LEDs lit (continuous or flashing).

• ERROR INDICATOR
  The continuous red light 5 indicates that the temperature of the battery is outside the permitted charging temperature range. The charging process begins as soon as the permitted temperature range has been reached. The flashing red light 5 indicates that the battery or charger needs to be serviced.

• CONNECTION STATUS INDICATOR
  The flashing blue light 4 indicates that there is a connection to your mobile device and/or data transfer is in progress.

• Audio signal
  The audio signal can be switched on or off via the Bosch ToolBox app. When the audio signal is switched on, the charger emits a short tone once the specified charging cycle is complete. When the Bosch Toolbox app is used to restore the charger to factory settings a longer tone is emitted.

• Restoring factory default settings
  If the “Power Boost” button 6 is held down for five seconds, the charger is restored to factory default settings. The “Power Boost” button will flash and a long audio signal is emitted. Factory default settings can also be restored using the Bosch Toolbox app.

Troubleshooting

Dirty or corroded battery pack contacts| Clean battery contacts by inserting and removing the battery pack from the charger several times. Do not attempt to clean contacts with tools. Have battery serviced by an Authorized Bosch Service Center or Service Station.
Battery fault| Replace battery pack.
Charger fault| Have charger checked by an Authorized Bosch Service Center or Service Station.
Green charging indicator light 7 is not lighting up.| Charger is not plugged into power outlet| Plug the charger to working power outlet.
Fuse or circuit breaker tripped| Replace fuse or reset tripped circuit breaker.
Power cord damaged| Have power cord replaced by an Authorized Bosch Service Center or Service Station.
Charger fault| Have charger checked by an Authorized Bosch Service Center or Service Station.
Blue connection status indicator light 4 is not lighting up.

No Bluetooth® connection.

Signal interference| Where possible, ensure that there are no obstructions (e.g. reinforced concrete, metal doors) between the charger and your mobile device. Keep the equipment away from any sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g. Wi-Fi transmitters).

Limited Warranty of Bosch Portable and Benchtop Power Tools:
Robert Bosch Tool Corporation (“Bosch”, “we” or “our”) warrants to the original end-user purchaser only that each BOSCH®-branded portable and benchtop power tool and battery (each, a “Product”) will be free from defects in material or workmanship for the period of time listed in the chart below for the “Product Category” applicable for such Product (as applicable, the “Warranty Period”):

Normal wear and tear of your Product is not covered by this Limited Warranty. As a result, Product parts that may become worn or exhausted over time due to normal wear and tear (including, without limitation, air filters, blade clamps, brushes, bumpers, bumper cover washers, chucks, cords, driver belts, driver blades, isolators, lifters, o-rings, pistons, piston/driver assemblies, piston stops, saw shoes, seals, strikers, etc.), or any other service or repairs required due to normal wear and tear on a Product, are not covered by this Limited Warranty.

To make a claim under this Limited Warranty, you must return the complete Product, transportation prepaid, to any Bosch Factory Service Center or Bosch Authorized Service Center. Please include a dated proof of purchase with your Product so we can determine if your Product is within the Warranty Period. If you do not have the dated proof of purchase for the Product that is the subject of your claim, we will use the Product’s production code to determine whether the Product is within the Warranty Period. 3. CARRYING CASES OR CARRYING BAGS.

ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES FOR A PRODUCT SHALL BE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE SHORTER OF (i) THE APPLICABLE WARRANTY PERIOD FOR SUCH PRODUCT/PRODUCT CATEGORY LISTED ABOVE, OR (ii) SUCH DURATION AS WOULD OTHERWISE APPLY UNDER APPLICABLE LAW IF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY WERE NOT OFFERED BY BOSCH. SOME STATES IN THE U.S., AND SOME CANADIAN PROVINCES, DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
