Product Usage Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the PEX Pipe and Expander Head

  1. Slide the PEX ring/sleeve onto the PEX pipe until it reaches the stop tab.
  2. Remove any dirt and debris from the expander head.
  3. Apply a thin coating of expander cone grease to the expander head using a clean, lint-free cloth. Avoid over-lubrication.

Step 2: Expanding the PEX Pipe

  1. Insert the expander head into the PEX-A pipe and pull the trigger. Ensure the expander head expands, retracts, and rotates slightly in each cycle.
  2. Continue until the pipe and ring/sleeve are flush with the expanded head shoulder.
  3. Remove the pipe when the head segments are contracted and release the trigger. Avoid keeping the tool in the expanded position with the pipe in place.

Step 3: Connecting to Fittings

  1. Wipe away any excess grease from the inside of the pipe.
  2. Slide the pipe over the fitting until it is flush with the shoulder of the fitting. Hold in place until the pipe contracts around the fitting.
  3. Verify that the connection is secure and complete. If there is a gap over 1/16 inch, cut off and replace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting:

  1. If there are issues with the connection, restart the process.
  2. If a manual tool was used for installation, switch to an approved power tool for making connections.
  3. Avoid over-expanding the pipe by not holding it in the expanded position for too long.
  4. Ensure no grease from the expander head is inside the pipe.
  5. Keep the pipe and ring/sleeves clean and dry for proper connections.

Compatible Tools:

Milwaukee tools are recommended for compatibility with this PEX plumbing system. Refer to the tool manufacturer’s guidelines for inspection and maintenance to ensure proper working condition.

Installation Instructions

  1. Using a cutting tool designed for use with PEX pipe, measure and cut pipe to desired length. Cut at 90˚, ensuring not to crush or deform the outer diameter. Be sure to make a square cut. An uneven or jagged cut may result in an improper connection.

  2. Slide the PEX ring/sleeve onto the PEX pipe until it reaches the stop tab.

  3. Remove the expander head from the tool and remove any dirt and debris. Using a clean, lint-free cloth, apply a thin coating of expander cone grease to the expander cone. Do not over-lubricate or coat the inside of the pipe.Jones-Stephens-F1960-Expansion-Fittings-fig \(3\)

  4. Insert the expander head into the PEX-A pipe. Pull the trigger. The expander head will expand, retract, and rotate slightly in each cycle. Note that some expander heads will not rotate automatically. If this is the case, gently push the pipe onto the expander head and rotate 1/8 turn in either direction.
WARNING: It is critical to create an even, smooth expansion mark. Failure to do so may create deep grooves and cause an improper connection which could result in a leak.Jones-Stephens-F1960-Expansion-Fittings-fig

Note: The number of expansion cycles will vary with the size of the pipe and the ambient temperature. Keeping the rings/sleeves warm (55˚F or higher) will help to speed the retraction time and ensure a uniform expansion. Do not make any connections in temperatures below 5˚F.

  5. Continue until the pipe and ring/sleeve are flush with the expanded head shoulder.

  6. Remove the pipe when the head segments are contracted and release the trigger. Do not keep the tool in the expanded position with the pipe in place as it may overexpand the pipe.

  7. Wipe away any excess grease from the inside of the pipe.

  8. Quickly slide the pipe over the fitting until it is completely flush with the shoulder of the fitting. Hold the fitting in place until the pipe and ring/sleeve contracts around the fitting. If the fitting is too tight to slide into the pipe, then remove and expand one additional time.

  9. Verify that the connection is complete and secure. The pipe should be resting firmly against the shoulder of the fitting. If there is a gap over 1/16”, cut off and replace.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  1. Is the fitting damaged or burred? If yes, replace the fitting.
  2. Is the pipe flush with the shoulder of the fitting? If not, cut out and replace.
  3. Is the tool expander cone bent or damaged? If yes, replace the expander head.
  4. Is the tool expander head segment bent or out of alignment? If yes, replace the expander head.
  5. Is the tool expander head screwed on tightly? If not, tighten the head.
  6. Was the tool rotated 1/8” turn between expansion cycles (if it does not have the auto-rotate feature)? If not, the connection should be cut off and restarted.
  7. Was installation done with a manual tool? If yes, make the connection with an approved power tool.
  8. Ensure that the pipe and ring/sleeve were not held in the expanded position too long and thus caused over-expansion and slow the contraction onto the fitting.
  9. Ensure that the grease from the expander head is not on the inside of the pipe.
  10. Ensure that the pipe and ring/sleeves are clean and dry.
