Contacts

The Saluda Grade Route

  • As created for Train Simulator Classic by High Iron Simulations, the Saluda Grade: Asheville —Spartanburg route extends 70 route miles between two busy and important cities on the Norfolk Southern (ex-Southern Railway) system: Asheville North Carolina and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
  • Asheville, a city set amid the magnificent Blue Ridge mountains is a famous tourist destination and home to the Biltmore Mansion of railroad tycoon George Vanderbilt. In railroading terms, it was (and is) a focal point of railroading, as Southern Railway lines from all directions converged at Asheville, including the Saluda Grade route (known in the
  • Southern era as the “A&S” and in the NS era as the “W Line”) to the southeast and important Asheville District lines to the north and east.
  • Spartanburg, South Carolina, similarly was (and is) a busy junction point between Southern Railway lines including the Saluda Grade route and the Southern’s main line (stretching between Washington, D. C. and New Orleans, Louisiana) . Both Asheville and Spartanburg (Hayne) are home to large rail yards and Spartanburg was also home to Southern Railway’s Hayne Car Shops into the 1990s.
  • Between Asheville and Spartanburg, the Saluda Grade route crosses the rugged and beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The legendary climb to Saluda from Melrose, with its 4.7 per cent average grade is the signature element of the line, but it is far from the sole compelling and challenging feature of the route. In crossing the Blue Ridge, the line features numerous additional grades of more than one per cent, and the rolling “saw tooth” profile of the line makes operating trains a constant challenge of effective throttle and braking use.
  • The route is also remarkably rich in rail-served lineside industries and lengthy spurs. There are in fact more than 40 rail -served industries along the line, including a large coal-fired power plant, plus wood and lumber yards, as well as chemical, cement, stone, manufacturing, and warehousing facilities.
  • Particularly notable among these tonnage-producing industries is the branch serving the large coal-fed electric Asheville power plant at Skyland and a sprawling industrial complex at Cane Creek, North Carolina.
  • The Saluda Grade: Asheville-Spartanburg route is set circa 1984-1994, in the formative years of Norfolk Southern operations.

The Scenarios

  • [SG 1.01] Doubling the Hill, Pt. 1

    • The Saluda Grade route’s climb of the Blue Ridge Mountain’s east slope was one of the great challenges of American railroading. The grade began in earnest at Tryon, then at Melrose reared up the 4.7 percent grade to the summit at Saluda which typically required trains to double or even triple the hill. You are the engineer of NS Train 171 and as the scenario begins you are at Tryon preparing to make the legendary climb and “double the hill.”
    • Duration: ~ 35 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.02] Doubling the Hill, Pt. 2

    • The Saluda Grade route’s climb of the Blue Ridge Mountain’s east slope was one of the great challenges of American railroading. In the first installment of this two-part scenario, you brought the front half of NS Train 171 to the summit at Saluda, now you are ready to drop back down to Melrose and bring the remainder of the train to the summit and prepare to continue west.
    • Duration: ~ 45 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.03] The Heavyweight, Pt. 1

    • In the long history of the Saluda Grade route, no train was heavier and few more famous than Train 270, the Belmont Coal Train, which lugged coal from a mine at Andover, Virginia to a powerplant at Belmont, North Carolina. You are the engineer of Train 270 at Asheville, and in this multi-part scenario you will face the challenges of safely taking the massive train across the Blue Ridge. As power, you have seven EMD SD40-2s placed on the head-end and mid-train.
    • Duration: ~ 40 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.04] The Heavyweight, Pt. 2

    • You are the engineer of Train 270 – the Belmont Coat Train – making its way across the Blue Ridge. As the second installment of this multi-part journey begins, you are at Naples awaiting a meet with a westbound Norfolk Southern freight, then you’ll continue east to Saluda over a curvy , steep, and rugged right-of-way.
    • Duration: ~ 45 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.05] The Heavyweight, Pt. 3

    • You are the engineer of Train 270 – the enormous Belmont Coat Train – making its way east across the Blue Ridge. As the third installment of this multi-part journey begins, you have stopped at Saluda depot to have the road foreman of engines climb aboard for the daunting descent of the legendary 4.7 percent Saluda Grade.
    • Duration: ~ 70 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.06] The Heavyweight, Pt. 4

    • You are the engineer of Train 270 – the Belmont Coat Train – making its way east across the Blue Ridge. As the fourth and final installment of this multi-part journey begins, you have stopped at Campobello to meet NS westbound Train 171, then you’ll make the final lap to Spartanburg’s Hayne Yard.
    • Duration: ~ 40 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Southern Railway).
  • [SG 1.07] Empties to Asheville

    • The large Skyland coal-fired powerplant located south of Asheville provided a steady flow of hopper loads bound to the powerplant and empties returning along the west end of the Saluda route. You are the engineer of a turn from Asheville to Skyland and return and, as the scenario begins, you are switching at the power plant and preparing to return to Asheville.
    • Duration: ~ 50 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD GP35.
  • [SG 1.08] Snowy Turn

    • With scores of active lineside shippers, the Saluda Grade route was busy with Norfolk Southern turns and locals serving the railroad’s customers. You are the engineer of a local turn working east from Asheville and, as the scenario begins, you are at Brickton with pick-up and set-out work at Brickton and Naples. It’s a snowy winter afternoon and your power is a pair of veteran Norfolk Southern EMD GP35s.
    • Duration: ~ 50 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD GP35.
  • [SG 1.09] Turn from Hayne

    • The area around Spartanburg’s Hayne Yard and west to Inman was rich in lineside shippers and Norfolk Southern operated a turn from Hayne – nicknamed the “Routser Job” – to serve its customers. On a gray spring day, you have been called as engineer of the Rouster Job and have climbed aboard a NS GP35 at the Hayne engine terminal, ready to work westbound.
    • Duration: ~ 65 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD GP35.
  • [SG 1.10] Blue Ridge Autumn Journey

    • Autumn in the Blue Ridge Mountains draws tourists from across the continent to experience the spectacular fall foliage, and the autumn beauty of the Blue Ridge serves, too, as an extraordinary stage for railroading. You are the engineer of Norfolk Southern Train 171 making its way westbound, and as the scenario begins you are stopped at legendary Saluda.
    • Duration: ~ 50 minutes.
    • Featured: Norfolk Southern EMD SD-40-2 (ex-Norfolk & Western).
