Union Pacific Wasatch Grade Scenario Pack 01
Wasatch Grade Scenario Pack 01 features Union Pacific freight operations of
the 1960s on the Train Simulator Classic Union Pacific Wasatch Grade: Ogden –
Evanston Route as developed by Milepost Simulations. The scenario pack’s ten
career scenarios are closely based upon actual railroad operations and re-
create an extraordinary era on the Union Pacific when high-horsepower second-
generation diesels, unique gas-turbine-electric locomotives, and first-
generation diesel all worked together on the Wasatch Grade route. Career
scenario scoring in this scenario pack is based upon a starting score of 1,000
with deductions made for errors.
Requirements:
This scenario pack requires Train Simulator Classic and the following DLC for
full use:

The Union Pacific Wasatch Grade Route
Constructed by Union Pacific as part of America’s historic transcontinental railroad, the crossing of the rugged Wasatch Mountains was one of the premier accomplishments of that great endeavor.
Initial work on the line through the Wasatch, via remote and rugged Echo and Weber Canyons, was begun in 1864 and the original line was opened in March 1869. As first built, the route was a single track with a 1.7 percent grade west of the small town of Wahsatch. During the Twentieth Century, the line was regularly improved and enhanced, most notably by the addition of a second main line which reduced the rule grade for eastbound trains to 1.14 percent. The Wasatch Grade — traditionally part of the Fourth Subdivision of Union Pacific’s Wyoming Division — was always home to big motive power and indeed it was Union Pacific’s quest to lift 4,450-ton trains eastbound from Ogden with a single locomotive that gave form to Union Pacific’s legendary 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy,” which entered service in 1941. Diesel freight power began working the route in 1950 and in 1952 Union Pacific placed in service the first of its line of General Electric gas-turbine-electric locomotives. The last use of steam locomotives in regular service occurred in 1958.
As masterfully developed for Train Simulator Classic by Milepost Simulations,
the Wasatch Grade Route extends from Ogden Utah eastward to Evanston, Wyoming,
75 route miles. As created, the route is set in the mid-1950s during the
“transition era” when steam and diesel power operated on the line. This
scenario pack, in turn, recalls the Wasatch of roughly a decade later when
diesel and gas-turbine-electrics put on a memorable display of “superpower”
and included the likes of Union Pacific’s “double-diesels” such as the
Electro-Motive DD35/DD35A and General Electric U50, as well as the ultimate
edition of UP’s gas-turbine-electrics, the 8,500-horsepower GE GTEL “Big
Blow.”
Scenarios
[WG 1.01] PFE Produce East, Pt. 1
Transporting California-grown produce eastward was a great staple of traffic
on the Union Pacific and UP, together with Southern Pacific, owned and
operated the famed Pacific Fruit Express. You are the engineer of Union
Pacific Extra 71 East and, with a heavy train of PFE produce, you are
preparing to depart Ogden’s Riverdale Yard and make the climb of the Wasatch
Mountains with second-generation EMD power providing 12,500 horsepower for the
ascent. This is the first of a two-part scenario.
- Duration: ~ 70 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive DD35A.
[WG 1.02] PFE Produce East, Pt. 2
Transporting California-grown produce eastward was a great staple of traffic
on the Union Pacific and UP, together with Southern Pacific, owned and
operated the famed Pacific Fruit Express. In Part 1 of this two-part scenario,
you made the climb from Ogden’s Riverdale Yard up Weber Canyon to Echo, and
now, with the road foreman aboard, you are ready to continue the eastbound
ascent to Evanston, Utah.
- Duration: ~ 65 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive DD35A.
[WG 1.03] Fourth Subdivision Local
By tradition, the crossing of the Wasatch Mountains was part of Union
Pacific’s Fourth Division of the Wyoming Division. You are working an
eastbound local – operating as UP Extra 844 East – and as the scenario begins
you have arrived at Peterson for set-out and pick-up work. You’ll have more
work to handle at Morgan, then you will proceed to Echo.
- Duration: ~ 65 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive GP30.
[WG 1.04] Utah Coal
Although less renowned as a coal producer than the likes of the Powder River
Basin, the state of Utah has historically originated millions of tons of coal,
much of which moves via rail. At dawn on a crisp autumn morning, you are the
engineer of a heavy Union Pacific eastbound coal drag and as the scenario
begins you are in the siding at Emory waiting to be overtaken by a priority
produce train.
- Duration: ~ 50 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive GP35.
[WG 1.05] Local from Park City
Union Pacific’s Park City Branch extended 38 miles from its famous namesake
town to a connection with the Wyoming Division main line at Echo and in the
1960s the branch remained a steady source of rail traffic including livestock,
agricultural products, manufactured goods, and ores. You are the engineer of
the local, operating as Extra 153 West, and as the scenario begins you have
arrived at Echo where you’ll make a pickup before proceeding west to Ogden.
- Duration: ~ 75 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive GP9.
[WG 1.06] UP Piggyback East
The 1960s witnessed a rapid growth of intermodal services – piggybacks – on
North American railroads and the big western roads such as Southern Pacific
and Union Pacific were at the forefront of the transformation. You are the
engineer of an eastbound priority piggyback received at Ogden from SP and now,
operating as UP Extra 36 East, you are ready to depart for the climb of Weber
Canyon.
- Duration: ~ 60 minutes.
- Featured: UP General Electric U50.
[WG 1.07] UP Extra 1 West, PT. 1
In an era of extraordinary motive power on the Union Pacific, perhaps none was
more remarkable than the railroad’s fleet of thirty 8,500-horsepower gas-
turbine-electric locomotives constructed by General Electric from 1958 through
1961. You are the engineer of a westbound manifest preparing to depart
Evanston on a snowy day in 1966 and your power is Union Pacific’s famed “One
Spot,” the “Big Blow” gas turbine wearing UP road number 1.
- Duration: ~ 80 minutes.
- Featured: UP General Electric 8,500-horsepower GTEL.
[WG 1.08] UP Extra 1 West, PT. 2
In this two-part scenario, you are the engineer of Union Pacific No. 1 – the
first of thirty extraordinary General Electric 8,500-horsepower gas-turbine-
electric locomotives constructed by General Electric between 1958 and 1961. As
the scenario begins you are aboard UP Extra 1 West waiting at Henefer for a
priority piggyback to overtake your train, and then you’ll continue to
Riverdale Yard.
- Duration: ~ 60 minutes.
- Featured: UP General Electric 8,500-horsepower GTEL.
[WG 1.09] Ogden Transfer Run
Ogden, Utah was one of the great rail hubs of the American West, hosting busy
yards and terminal facilities of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Rio
Grande. You have been called as the engineer of a Union Pacific transfer run
in Ogden and as the scenario begins you are at the D&RGW yard with work to
perform en route back to UP’s Riverdale Yard.
- Duration: ~ 35 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive GP30.
[WG 1.10] Cattle Drive on Rails
From the opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, the transport of
livestock was an important staple of railroad traffic. By the 1960s, the
movement of livestock by rail was declining, but it remained a regular
occurrence in UP’s Wyoming Division. You are the engineer of UP livestock
Extra 1471 East and as the scenario begins you are at Echo on a rainy spring
1963 morning where you’ll pick up stock cars from the Park City Branch. With
an aged set of F7s as power, your climb of the Wasatch will be a grind.
- Duration: ~ 80 minutes.
- Featured: UP Electro-Motive F7A.
