12 Large Big and Bulky

• Handling Graphics (or Pictograms) are applied to the carton to convey handling instructions without the limitations of language. Common examples are:
  

• The number of pictograms vary with the type of products.

• “Maximum Stacking by Number” and mechanical handling (e.g.: clamp, fork, hand truck) pictograms are required.

• Based upon industry-wide standard, the “This Side Up” and “Fragile” pictograms should be placed in the upper left-hand corner of the box panels. If both pictograms are required, the “This Side Up” pictogram should be the leftmost marking.
  • After “This Side Up” and “Fragile”, Costco requires “Maximum Stacking by Number” followed by mechanical handling graphics, then others (if needed).

• Pictograms must be printed on all four sides of the carton.
  • Printing on the top and bottom of the carton may be required based upon the load orientation used during shipping.
  • Multi-box items are required to have pictograms on all cartons.
  • Printing in black is preferred for all markings, but most important, is that the color of the pictogram contrasts with the color of the background.

*Large / Big & Bulky items are defined as meeting at least one of the following criteria:

• Packages exceeding 150 lbs./68 kg

• Packages where the combined dimensions of length and girth exceed 165 in./419 cm

• Packages exceeding 108 in./274 cm in length

• Items have been approved by Costco to move through the big & bulky delivery network

• Pictogram size requirements:
  • Carton height ≥ 36 in./91 cm: 8 in./20 cm pictogram (minimum)
  • Carton height between 24 in./60 cm and 36 in./91 cm: 6 in./15 cm pictogram (minimum)
  • Carton height between 16 in./40 cm and 24 in./60 cm: 4 in./10 cm pictogram (minimum)
  • Carton height < 16 in./40 cm: 2 in./5 cm pictogram (minimum)

• Ensure the original height/width ratio of the pictograms is maintained.

Handling Graphics (Pictograms)

| Fragile| Indicates the product inside the packaging is fragile and needs to be handled with care.
| Maximum Stacking by Number (“6” is reference only)| Indicates the maximum number of cartons that can be vertically stacked for storage. (The “6” shown in the graphic is for reference only.) Maximum stacking will vary by product and will be determined by your Packaging Engineer.
Target stacking height is 25 feet / 7.6 meters.

| Fork Truck Permitted| Indicates the carton can be handled using a fork truck from this side. Typically used for product on a pallet.

| Standard Clamp Truck Permitted| Indicates the carton can be handled using an articulating/fixed clamp truck from this side.

| Standard Clamp Truck NOT Permitted| Indicates the carton cannot be handled using an articulating/fixed clamp truck from this side.

End Destination /Delivery Points (MDO /Delivery Teams /Members)

| Heavy Weight / Multiple Person Lift| Carton is heavy, must use two or more people to lift. Failure to do so may result in injury.

| Hand Truck Permitted| Indicates the carton can be handled using a hand truck from this side.

| Hand Truck NOT Permitted| Indicates the carton cannot be handled using a hand truck from this side.

End Destination /Delivery Points (MDO /Delivery Teams /Members)

| **** Horizontal Shipping is Permitted| Indicates the carton can be shipped or handled in the horizontal orientation. This symbol must be paired with the “Horizontal Shipping is NOT Permitted” on the other sides of the carton to ensure it is laid on the correct side.

| Horizontal Shipping is Permitted (1 Layer Only)| Indicates the carton can be shipped or handled in the horizontal orientation. This symbol must be paired with the “Horizontal Shipping is NOT Permitted” on the other sides of the carton to ensure it is laid on the correct side.

| Horizontal Shipping is NOT Permitted| Indicates the carton cannot be shipped or handled in the horizontal orientation. The carton must remain upright.

Special Circumstances – Buyer Approval Required

| Tip-Over Hazard| Use caution when moving, carton may be top heavy.

| Do Not Drop on Corner| Indicates the carton should never be allowed to fall on its corners or edges.

| **** Keep Dry| Indicates the packaging is not waterproof, and may be sensitive to moisture, and it should always be kept indoors and in a dry place during the entire handling cycle from the factory to the end user.

| Do Not Stack| Indicates the carton cannot be stacked.

Special Circumstances – Buyer Approval Required

| Box Knife NOT Permitted| Indicates the carton may not be opened using a box knife.

| Box Knife Permitted| Indicates the carton may be opened using a box knife.

| Do Not Stack Dissimilar Carton Sizes| **** Indicates cartons that are not the same size cannot be stacked together.

Special Circumstances – Buyer Approval Required

| Do Not Use Knee| Prohibits the use of the knee to facilitate manual handling.

| Do Not Step| Prohibits walking and/or stepping on the cartons.
