Prepare Engine

  1. Insert the engine into the rocket and tighten until it stops. Ensure the tip touches the propellant.
  2. Attach the engine retainer cap and starter plug as directed.
  3. Handle engines carefully as they are flammable. Only prepare engines outdoors at the launch site.

Add Clay to Shuttle

  1. Fill the shuttle’s cavity with clay for balance.
  2. Adjust the center of gravity by adding or removing clay until it balances at the marked location.

Prepare for Flight

  1. Insert and push the fin units forward until they stop. Fins should have a snug fit; add clear tape if needed.
  2. Place the opening in the shuttle nose onto the peg for proper alignment.

Ready for Launch
Ensure fins are securely in place before proceeding with the launch. Use caution and follow all safety instructions.

Countdown and Launch
Follow the provided countdown procedure, ensuring all safety precautions are in place before liftoff.

Prepare Display Stand

  1. Place the support through the hole in the base and screw the retainer ring in place.

PRECAUTIONS

ESTES-9991-Space-Shuttle- \(12\)

  • PRE-LAUNCH CHECK For safety, never launch a damaged rocket. Check the rocket’s body, nose cone and fins. Also, check the engine mount, recovery system and launch lug(s). Repair any damage before launching the rocket.
  • FLYING YOUR ROCKET C hoose a large field (500 ft. [152 m] square) free of dry weeds and brown grass. The larger the launch area, the better your chance of recovering your rocket. Football fields and playgrounds are great. Launch only with little or no wind and good visibility. Always follow the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) SAFETY CODE.
  • MISFIRES TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE CONTROLLER. WAIT ONE MINUTE BEFORE GOING NEAR THE ROCKET. Disconnect the micro-clips and remove the engine. Take the plug and starter out of the engine. A burned starter means the starter tip was not touching engine propellent. Install a new starter; be sure the tip is touching propellant inside the engine. Push the plug in place. Repeat steps under Countdown and Launch.
