Dwil Wood Look Paint Kit Instructions
WHY WOOD LOOK
People may choose wood look paint instead of real wood for reasons such as cost, maintenance, versatility, durability, environmental considerations, allergies, and sensitivities. Wood look paint offers a more affordable option, requires less maintenance, allows for greater design flexibility, can be more durable, and can reduce the demand for timber and help conserve forests.

Step 2: Wood Look

TOTAL PROJECT TIME: 2DAYS
IMPORTANT! PLAN OUT YOUR APPLICATION
Apply Wood Look paint between 41° – 90° F and start your project at least 4 hours before any direct sun will contact your door because direct sunlight will cause the Wood Look paint to dry too quickly during application. Or, you can apply Wood Look one hour after any direct sunlight has gone past your door to allow time for your door to cool down. Make sure rain is not in the forcast for a minimum of 4 hours. Leave your door slightly cracked open during application and dry time to prevent your door from sticking. Cover the floor and any nearby surfaces with masking film to protect them from any drips or spills.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead
dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS,
SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO
AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure.
Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and wet mop. Before you start, find out
how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead
Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to

PREP WORK
Preparing the wood surface properly before painting is crucial for achieving a smooth and professional-looking finish. Follow these steps for effective surface preparation.
-
CLEAN
Before applying the paint, it’s important to thoroughly clean the surface to remove any dirt, grease, or other contaminants. Use a degreaser or a mixture of water and dish soap to clean the surface, and rinse it thoroughly with clean water. Dry the surface with a clean cloth. -
SAND
Once the surface is clean and dry, use sandpaper to lightly sand the surface. This will help the paint adhere better to the surface. Use a fine-grit sandpaper, such as 220grit, and sand in the direction of the grain. -
MASKING
If you don’t want to paint a certain area, use masking tape to cover it up. Make sure to apply the tape evenly and securely to prevent any paint from seeping through. -
VENTILATION
Make sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Open windows and doors, or use a fan to circulate air. It’s also recommended to wear a respirator mask to protect yourself from any fumes. -
REMOVE
If it is easy and possible, remove your front door handle or door knob, knocker, kick plates, and deadbolts. Front door knobs and deadbolts may be removed via screws located on the interior side of your door. If you can’t easily remove the hardware, then cover up with painter’s tape. -
PROTECT
Cover the floor and any nearby surfaces with masking film to protect them from any drips or spills.
WOOD TONE BASE COAT
-
STIR THE PAINT
Before starting, stir the paint thoroughly to ensure it’s evenly mixed.
-
APPLY THE FIRST COAT
Using a brush, roller, or spray gun, apply the first coat of paint to the surface. Start at the top and work your way down, using long, even strokes. Make sure to cover the entire surface evenly. Let the first coat dry (recommended drying time is 1.5-2 h)
-
APPLY THE SECOND COAT
Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat of paint. Again, start at the top and work your way down, using long, even strokes. Make sure to cover the entire surface evenly. Let the second coat dry (recommended drying time is 1.5-2 h). -
APPLY ADDITIONAL COATS (IF NECESSARY)
Depending on the color and condition of the appliance, you may need to apply additional coats of paint. Follow the same process as above, letting each coat dry completely before applying the next. -
LET THE FINAL COAT DRY
Once you’ve applied all necessary coats of paint, let the final coat dry completely according to the recommended drying time(1.5-2h).
WOOD GRAIN LOOK COAT
RECOMMENDED: Apply the Wood Look Coat over the Wood Base Coat per the grain direction depicted in the images to the left of the page because it is the most common grain found in wood doors.
- Surface Compatibility: Pour about half of the paint into your paint tray. Dab the Mitt into the paint, getting the palm and fingertips of the Mitt wet with the Wood Look Coat. Dab off some of the excess paint onto a clean area of your paint tray. Open your door and begin applying the Wood Look Coat on one end of the door’s first vertical section. Apply the paint evenly using long, vertical hand strokes as much as possible. When you are coating the beveled recessed areas, be sure to remove any excess paint to prevent pooling. Immediately after coating a vertical section, use the Mitt to lightly make one long, vertical stroke in order to create a uniform grain look. There is no need to add additional paint to the Mitt when blending. TIP: How heavy or light you apply the Finish Coat will dictate the overall deepness of your wood’s tone.of wood surface you are planning to paint. Our Outdoor Wood Paint is designed to work on various wood types, including hardwoods, softwoods, and pressure-treated lumber.
- Do not go back and repeat the vertical strokes over the same area because the paint will start to dry and smudge. If you noticed you missed a spot, don’t worry, it will be filled in with the next layer. Allow each coat of the Wood Grain Look Coat to dry for a minimum of 1 hour before applying your next coat For a wood grain look with more variation, apply 2 coats. For a darker, more solid wood grain look, apply 3 coats.
- Take a step back and look at the panels you just painted. Only if you see any areas where the Wood Look Coat has pooled, take the 2″ brush and lightly dry brush out any heavy areas by using vertical strokes. TIP: Place your Mitt in a zip-lock plastic bag to keep the paint from drying on it. You do not need to rinse the Mitt between each coat.
- Apply the first coat of the Finish Coat to the horizontal sections using the same process as the vertical, only with a horizontal stroke. Again, allow each coat to dry for a minimum of 1 hour. Apply the same number of wood grain coats to the horizontal surfaces as previously applied to the vertical surfaces.
WOOD TOP COAT
-
STIR THE PAINT
Before starting, stir the paint thoroughly to ensure it’s evenly mixed. -
PAINTING SURFACE
Wear gloves and use the roller and brush provided in the tool kit to apply. We recommend using the roller for flat surfaces and the brush for corners and gaps to achieve a smooth and even finish. -
REMOVE MASKING
After about 1 hours, use the blade to slowly slit the edges of masking tape, pulling the tape. -
DRYING TIME
Allow the topcoat to dry for at least 24-36 hours.
Following these application guidelines will help you achieve a professional- looking finish with our Wood Look Paint. Remember to adhere to the specific instructions provided by the paint manufacturer, as drying times, application techniques, and other recommendations may vary based on the product formulation.
HOW TO CLEAN AND MAINTAIN
-
CLEANING BRUSHES, ROLLERS OR SPRAY GUNS
Clean your brushes, rollers, or spray guns thoroughly with water or the recommended solvent immediately after use. Do not let the paint dry on the brush or roller, as this will make it difficult to clean. -
DISPOSING OF UNUSED PAINT
Disposing of unused paint:
Dispose of any unused paint and empty cans according to local regulations. Do not pour paint down the drain or dispose of it in the trash, as this can be harmful to the environment. -
STORING PAINT
Store any leftover paint in a cool, dry place. Make sure the lid is tightly sealed to prevent air from entering the can, which can cause the paint to dry out. Always keep paint out of reach of children and pets.
By following these clean-up steps, you’ll ensure that your brushes, rollers, or spray guns are kept in good condition, and that any unused paint is disposed of responsibly. This will help you to prolong the life of your tools, and minimize your impact on the environment.
MAINTENANCE
-
REGULAR CLEANING
To keep your door looking its best, clean it regularly with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, as these can damage the paint. Rinse the surface with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth.
-
AVOID HARSH CHEMICALS
To prevent damage to the paint, avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on the surface of the appliance. If you need to use a cleaner, choose a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.
-
TOUCH-UPS
Over time, the paint on your appliance may become chipped or scratched. If this happens, touch up the affected area with a small brush or a spray can of matching paint. Follow the same application steps as outlined in the Application section of this manual.
-
INSPECTION
Periodically inspect the painted surface of the appliance for any signs of damage or wear. If you notice any chips, scratches, or other damage, touch up the affected area as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
By following these maintenance steps, you’ll ensure that your door looks its best for years to come and that the paint remains in good condition. Regular cleaning and touch-ups will help to prevent further damage and prolong the life of it.
