Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of the ELRO Pro PK4910 carbon monoxide detector! A carbon monoxide detector sounds an alarm at elevated carbon monoxide (CO) levels and warns you of potentially life-threatening situations. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas and cannot be detected naturally. A carbon monoxide detector is therefore indispensable in every home in which combustion appliances are present.

About carbon monoxide (CO)
What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas and cannot
be detected naturally. It is a combustion by-product produced by the
combustion of carbonaceous fuels such as natural gas, petroleum, coal and
wood. If incomplete combustion occurs, the amount of carbon monoxide can
quickly rise to a dangerous level. There may be various combustion appliances
in and around houses that can possibly lead to increased CO concentrations,
such as:
- Heating equipment: central heating boiler, (open) fireplace, (gas) heater.
- Water heaters: geyser, boiler, combi boiler (combines heating and hot water).
- Cooking appliances: stove/gas stove, gas oven, barbecue.
- Other devices: generator, motor vehicle, power tools.
Health effects of carbon monoxide
Adverse health effects arise because CO binds to haemoglobin (Hb) in the blood
and takes the place of oxygen, as blood is transported through the vessels.
This allows less oxygen to reach the organs and muscles in the body. As a
result, various health problems can arise:
- Exposure to 100-200 ppm: Mild headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue (often described as ‘flu-like’ symptoms).
- Exposure to 200-400 ppm: Severe headache, confusion, dizziness, accelerated heart rate.
- Exposure to >400 ppm: Unconsciousness, coma, heart/lung failure, death.
What to do if carbon monoxide is detected?
If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds an alarm and has detected carbon monoxide,
proceed as follows:
- Keep calm, open all doors and windows and turn off all combustion appliances.
- If the detector continues to sound the alarm, evacuate the building. Leave all doors and windows open and do not enter until the alarm has stopped.
- Call the emergency number 112 and follow the instructions of the emergency responders. Seek medical attention for anyone who may be suffering from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Contact an c utility company. Do not use any combustion appliances until they have been checked by a qualified person.
Activation and testing
Before using the carbon monoxide alarm, it is important to activate and test
it. Place the carbon monoxide alarm on the mounting plate (check lines in
position h) and turn it clockwise UNTIL YOU FEEL A CLICK (to position i)! The
device will now activate and count down from 60 to 0. After approximately 60
seconds, the carbon monoxide alarm has fully booted up. Next, check if the
device is functioning properly by pressing and holding the test/mute button
for approximately 3 seconds. If the device is working properly, it will beep
four times and flash red. If this is not the case, do not use the device and
contact the supplier.
NOTE
- The volume of the test signal is lower than the volume of the alarm signal. If you want to hear the volume of the alarm signal, press and hold the test button for about 10 seconds. A few seconds after the test signal, you will hear the alarm signal of > 85 dB (A).
- During testing and activation, a battery symbol is displayed, this is NOT an indication that the battery is low but only a display test. When the battery reaches the end of its lifespan, the yellow LED will light up, together with a beep, once every 40 seconds. See also the table functionality.
Determining the location
In which room do you place a carbon monoxide detector?
- For optimal protection, place a carbon monoxide detector in the following areas:
- In every room where a combustion appliance is present.
- In every bedroom.
- In every room where a lot of time is spent and where the alarm from other carbon monoxide alarms may not be audible.
- For minimal protection, place a carbon monoxide detector in the following areas:
- In every room where a combustion appliance is present.
- In the room where you spend most of your time
Where do you install a carbon monoxide detector?
- In rooms containing a combustion appliance, you can install the carbon monoxide detector in the following location:
- At a horizontal distance of 1-3 meters from the combustion appliance.
- If the space is divided by a wall or, for example, a large cupboard: on the same side as the combustion appliance
- Preferably on the ceiling:
- At a minimal distance of 30 cm from the wall.
- In the centre of the room.
- If ceiling mounting is not possible, the device can be mounted on the wall:
- Approximately 15-30 centimetres from the ceiling
- Above the top of windows/doors near the combustion appliance.
- In rooms without a combustion appliance, install the carbon monoxide detector on the wall at breathing height. The breathing height depends on the type of room: in a bedroom, you consider the breathing height from a sleeping position; in an office, you consider the breathing height in a sitting position; and in a corridor, you consider the breathing height in a walking position.
NOTE: Never place a carbon monoxide detector in the following locations
- Behind objects that block the airflow, such as cupboards and curtains.
- In locations where the LCD screen and LED indicators are not visible.
- Near air in- and outlets such as windows and doors.
- Directly above a sink or washbasin.
- Next to an extractor hood, ventilation grid or air conditioning.
- Areas where the temperature falls below – 10 °C or rises above 52 °C.
- In areas where dust or dirt can block the sensor.
- In damp areas.
Assembly
- Take the mounting bracket and mark the positions of the drill holes.
- Drill 2 holes with a diameter of 5 millimetres.
- Push the plugs into the holes.
- Hang the mounting bracket in the correct location and secure it with the screws.
- Screw the carbon monoxide detector onto the mounting bracket. The carbon monoxide detector will switch on automatically.
- Test if the device works properly by pressing and holding the test/mute button for approximately 3 seconds. If the device is working properly, it will beep four times and flash red

Standby
In the standby mode, the CO level (if this is lower than 20 ppm it will
display 0) and the room temperature are shown, in an alternating manner. If
the CO level exceeds 20 ppm, only the CO level is displayed. In night mode,
standby Led will not fully automatically switched off in dark areas. Instead,
in the dark environment, the LED will be switched to the low brightness mode
within half an hour.
Alarm
If the CO level in the room is too high, the carbon monoxide detector switches
to the alarm mode according to the scheme below.
- 030 – 049 PPM: Alarm signal after 120 minutes
- 050 – 099 PPM: Alarm signal after 60 – 90 minutes
- 100 – 299 PPM: Alarm signal after 10 – 40 minutes

300 PPM: Alarm signal within 3 minutes
Refer to the “What to do when carbon monoxide is detected?” chapter to learn
what to do if the carbon monoxide detector triggers an alarm.
If the CO level drops below 20 ppm, the carbon monoxide alarm will switch to
the alarm memory mode for 48 hours. This will notify you of the increased CO
concentration, even if you were not on-site at the time of the alarm.
Mute alarm
This carbon monoxide detector is equipped with a mute function with which the
alarm signal can be temporarily switched off (approximately ten minutes). When
the detector is triggered, press the test button to activate this function. If
the CO level exceeds 50 ppm after 10 minutes, the detector switches back to
alarm mode. The alarm mute function cannot be used if the detected CO level is
higher than 200 ppm.
NOTE: Do not take any risks and only use the alarm mute function if you are
100% sure that the situation is safe. When in doubt, leave the premises and
follow the instructions in the chapter
“What to do when carbon monoxide is detected?”. Only use the mute function if
you are in the same room as the carbon monoxide detector!
Low battery voltage
This carbon monoxide detector is equipped with a non-replaceable battery which
has a lifespan of approx. 10 years. When the batteries are low, the detector
switches to low battery mode. This means that the detector must be replaced as
soon as possible. The low battery warning can be silenced for approx. 10 hours
by pressing the test button.
End of life
This carbon monoxide detector has an end-of-life warning. Approximately 10
years after activation, the device needs to be replaced and switched to this
mode. Replace the device as soon as possible after this message occurs.
Maintenance
- The carbon monoxide detector is equipped with a self-testing mechanism. Once a month, the detector automatically checks the functionality of the sensor and the siren. If problems are found, the detector switches to the error mode (either siren error or sensor error). We recommend to manually test the detector at least once a year by pressing and holding the test button.
- Dust is a major cause of false alarms. Therefore, clean the carbon monoxide detector once a month. Use a vacuum cleaner to gently remove any accumulated dust along the sides of the carbon monoxide detector. Never use a wet cloth or detergent to clean your alarm, as this can be harmful to the sensor.

Answer
| If the carbon monoxide detector does not emit light or sound after pressing the test button, it means that the device has not yet been activated or is not working properly. Check whether the detector has been correctly activated (see chapter “Activation and testing”). Then, keep the test button pressed until the detector emits a light and sound signal. If this does not happen, the appliance does not
function properly and must not be used.

- Warning: The installation of a carbon monoxide detector should not be a substitute for proper installation, use and maintenance of combustion appliances and suitable ventilation and exhaust systems.

- Warning: Keep electronic equipment and packaging materials out of the reach of children and pets.
- Do not expose the product and batteries to extreme temperatures.
- This product is not water resistant and is only suitable for indoor use. Only clean the product with a dry cloth.
- The following substances can affect the sensor and cause false alarms: methane, propane, isobutylene, isopropanol, ethylene, benzene, toluene, ethyl acetate, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, alcohol-based products, paints, thinners, solvents, adhesives, hair sprays, aftershaves, perfumes and some cleaning agents.
- EN 50291-1 – The apparatus may not prevent the chronic effects of carbon monoxide exposure. The apparatus will not fully safeguard individuals at special risk.

When this product reaches the end of its life, take it to a designated waste collection point in your area to ensure safe disposal or recycling. Protect the environment and human health and use natural resources responsibly!
