SAVI Controls QAPD-01 Companion Switch
WARNING
Turn OFF the power to the branch circuit for the switch and lighting fixture at the service panel. All wiring connections must be made with the POWER OFF to avoid personal injury and/or damage to the switch. This device is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations in the United States and the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations in Canada. If you are unsure or uncomfortable about performing the installation, consult a qualified electrician.
Installation Instructions
-
Shut off power to the circuit at circuit breaker or fuse box.
IMPORTANT: Verify power is OFF to switch box before continuing. -
Remove wall plates.
-
Remove the switch mounting screws.
-
Carefully remove the switches from the switch box.
Note: DO NOT disconnect the wires. -
There are three screw terminals on the switch, these are marked:
- GROUND
- TRAVELER – black/other (connects to main outlet traveler)
- NEUTRAL – white
-
Match these screw terminals to the wires connected to the existing switch.
-
Refer to the Multi-Switch Wiring section below for 3-way installations.
-
Disconnect the wires from the existing switch and label the wires according to the previous terminal connection.
Multi-Switch Wiring
For 3-way configurations, the smart switch must be installed in the junction box where LINE (Hot) enters the electrical circuit (PRIMARY). To determine which junction box is PRIMARY and which one is SECONDARY:
- Turn the power back ON.
- Using a voltage tester, check voltage on the terminals connected to the black wires to determine which side is PRIMARY.
Note: PRIMARY will always be Hot and SECONDARY will only be hot when the light load is ON.
Wire Gauge Requirements
Use 12AWG or 14AWG suitable for at least 80ºC for supplying neutral, ground, and traveler connections.
Wire Strip Length
For attachment using the enclosure’s holes, strip insulation 5/8in (16mm). UL
specifies the tightening torque for the screws is 14Kgf-cm (12lbf-in).
Please refer to the diagrams and follow steps below.
-
Connect the green or bare copper ground wire to the GROUND terminal.
-
Connect the white wire to the NEUTRAL terminal (use a jumper wire if needed).
-
Connect the TRAVELER wire from the smart switch.
Note: The wire must match the wire connected to the TRAVELER terminal. -
Tie the two remaining wires together using a wire nut.
-
Insert the switch into the switch box being careful not to pinch or crush wires.
-
The switch must be independently mounted (vertical position only).
-
Secure the switch to the box using the supplied screws.
-
Mount the wall plate.
-
Reapply power to the circuit at fuse box or circuit breaker and test the system.
Basic Operation
The connected light can be controlled from the front panel of the companion switch; functionality adapts if it’s connected to a switch or dimmer.
Manual Control
The front panel rocker switch allows the user to turn ON/OFF or dim UP/DN the connected fixture by completing the following steps:
- Connect to switch: Press the top of the rocker to turn the light ON or press the bottom to turn it OFF.
- Connect to dimmer: Press/hold the top of the rocker to dim UP, or press/hold the bottom to dim DOWN.
IMPORTANT: This switch is rated for and intended to only be used with copper wire. The Companion Switch is designed to only work on 120VAC circuits. For 277VAC 3-way circuits, use standard 277VAC compatible 3-way switch and follow the wiring instructions included in the Qoralux Smart Switch or Dimmer Install Guide.
Note: For 3-way configurations, ensure the smart switch is installed in
the junction box where Line (Hot) enters the electrical circuit. Insert wires
into holes, do not wrap wires around screws. Do not remove screws.
