SL8 Roof Tiles Fixed Verge
TECHNICAL INFORMATION- LOADING SL8 ROOF TILES
It is common practice to load out tiles in preparation for installation on
the roof as shown in image 1.
Due to the unique design of Ibstock SL8 tiles, the leading edges do not make
contact with the tile below when stacked. For this reason, care must be taken
when loading tiles onto the roof and when manoeuvring around stacks of tiles.
If stacked on the roof, tiles should be loaded in small batches and any
contact with the lower portion of the tile stack should be avoided to prevent
tiles being dislodged.
If loading
out in the traditional manner, Ibstock recommend that stacks of no more than 4
tiles are placed on tiling battens. A competent person must carry out the
appropriate risk assessments and a suitable stacking method should be selected
and detailed in a method statement. All work should be carried out in
accordance with BS 8000-6 Workmanship on Building Sites – Code of Practice for
Slating and Tiling of Pitched Roofs and Walls.
Image 2 shows a side view of the SL8 tile stack. As can be seen from this
image, contact with the front edge of the stack must be avoided as it will
cause the tiles to become unstable.
When tiles are stacked in this manner, care must be taken not to dislodge
stacks of tiles as displacement could cause injury as well as damage to the
tiles.
To reduce the risk of tiles slipping it is recommended that they are loaded
onto the roof in small batches of no more than 4 tiles per stack.
In some
circumstances, particularly involving steeper roof pitches (35 degrees and
above) it may be advisable to lay the tiles as they are distributed on the
roof.
This has the additional benefit of reducing the movement of the installers.
Where tiles are loaded out on the roof in stacks, local knowledge and
experience must take precedence. Care must be taken when working around tiles
on the roof. Additional Guidance can be found in the HSE document HSG33 Health
and Safety in Roof work.
