Standard Operation Procedures
Step 1: Add Water
- Rotate the cap of the water tank. Pour tap water or bottled distilled water through the hole.
- Do not use well water which may interfere with our nutrients, or softened water, as it contains levels of sodium, which is usually harmful to plants.
- If the water level is below 1L, the Fan & Water light will flash blue. The light will stop flashing after topping off the water. For best results, keep the water level between 5L-6.5L.
Note: When adding water, always remember to add nutrition in proportion.
Step 2: Add Nutrients
- Fill A nutrient bottle with room-temperature tap water or bottled distilled water. Shake it until it’s well mixed.
- Fill B nutrient bottle with room temperature tap water or bottled distilled water. Shake it until it’s well mixed.
- Add 30 milliliters A solution and 30 milliliters B solution when adding 6-liter water to the tank.
Ratio of Water and Nutrition
Water | Nutrition |
---|---|
ll | 5ml A+ 5ml B |
2L | 10ml A+ 10ml B |
3L | 15ml A+ 15ml B |
4L | 20ml A+ 20ml B |
5L | 25ml A+ 25ml B |
6L | 30ml A+ 30ml B |
6.5L | 32.5ml A+ 32.5ml B |
Nutrient Feeding Tip:
- Too much nutrient may be harmful to your plants.
- Always top off water level when adding Liquid Nutrients. 1-Liter water needs to add into 5 milliliters A solution and 5 milliliter B solution. For best results, top off the water level in your garden regularly.
- Do not use well water or softened water. Most well water contains a high amount of dissolved solids that upset the balance of our nutrients, and softened water adds sodium. This can result in the phenomenons that plants suddenly brown, or just not grow well.
- Shelf life: Nutrient particles have a storage life of 2 years in unopened bottles if stored at the ambient temperature without exposure to sunlight.
- Well-mixed nutrient solutions have storage life of 5 months if stored without exposure to sunlight.
Step 3: Plug-In
- Do not plug the adapter when there is no water in tank.
- You will see the power indicator light turn red and flash yellow after plugging the adapter, indicating that light panel can be controlled.
- Press the power button to turn it on, and run on Vegetables Mode (16h-on-and-8h-off-cycle).
- In the meanwhile, the water pump and the fan will turn on by default (30mins-on-and-30mins off-cycle).
Method of Planting Seedlings
- The garden kit does not include the seed. Choose the seed of a well-known brand at local. Add 3-4 seeds to per sponges to improve germination rate. Some seeds germinate in less than 24 hours, Some take 1-4 weeks. Please be patient. Choose one seedling when the seeds grow into seedlings. More seedlings probably result in poor growth due to insufficient nutrients.
Step1
- Take out the small planting basket and the sponges, put the sponge into the small planting basket. Put 3-4 seeds into the wet sponge.
- Tip 1: The seedling cover is to help the seeds germinate. Tip 2: Use the soaking method to eliminate bad seeds. It is recommended to soak the seeds in water for 2 hours, and then choose the seeds that sink to the bottom. The germination rate of these seeds will be higher.
- Tip 3: The basket label is to prevent the sponge from getting moldy/algae.
Step2
- Place the small planting basket on the planting cover plate. Add water through the water inlet till the water level go up to the bottom of the planting basket.
- Choose the vegetables mode or flowers and fruits mode according to the actual needs.
Step3
- After the seeds germinate, keep one seedling only.
- Tip 1: Observe the water level, keep the water level on 5L-6.5L.
- Tip 2: 1-Liter water needs to add into 5 milliliters A solution and 5 milliliter B solution.
- Tip 3: When the Fan&Water light flashes blue, it indicates it’s short of water. Please add water. Tip 4: When you plant large plants, some pots are not in use, put the cactus cover on.

Gardening Tips for Maximum Harvests
Germination
- Check the seed information regarding the optimal temperature and days to germinate. Plant 3-5 seeds per sponge. Some seeds germinate in less than 24 hours, while take 1-7 days, others require 1-4 weeks.
- Note: Plants have seasonal, periodic, and regional characteristics. Characteristics of different plants (temperature, light, and atmospheric humidity) are all related to plant growth. Planting crops suitable for local growth in the current season is the best.
- If there are plants that have sprouted, turn on the Light Panel. Do not wait for all the plants to sprout, otherwise those sprouted plants will grow excessively. You do not need to turn the light on when you first place them and had better wait until the seeds have finished germinating.
- The basket lid helps regulate moisture and temperature for optimal seed germination. Leave them on until plants are nearly touching the lid, then take it off to allow for normal growth.
- For larger plants, it is recommended to plant them at a separate distance to allow for better overall growth. Cover the empty holes to prevent the Water Tank from being exposed to light, which could potentially allow for mold and bacteria growth and affect plant roots.
Transplant
- Only when you see rhizome (plant stems) around the sponge, may you transplant the seedling.
- Split the sponge to take one seedling out and move it to another pot.
- Put the sponge back, only keep one seedling in the sponge to allow sufficient nutrition.
Pruning
-
Prune your plants to maintain their height, rather than continuing to raise the Light Panel. Pruning ensures your plants stay compact and healthily distanced from the Light Panel, which will provide you with a bigger harvest!
-
Pruning the plant just above a new leaf set while maintaining the Light Panel height will ensure that slow-growing plants in your garden get all the light they need to flourish.
-
Prune often to maintain a healthy garden, but never take more than 1/3 of each plant at a time.
-
Plants compete for light. Left untended, faster-growing plants can even begin to block enough light to suppress the growth of their slower-growing neighbors. Spreading leaves must be trimmed to ensure slow growers continue to receive enough light to thrive and produce big yields.
-
Finally … pruning can also mean harvesting. Each time you prune you get to enjoy fresh herbs in a salad, soup on pizza, or a sandwich. A full, healthy garden will look much better than a giant, uncontrolled mess. Pruning keeps control of your Gardening Kit!
Pollinating
- Because most people do not have bees in their homes, you will need to start manually pollinating your fruiting plants (tomatoes, peppers, etc.) once they begin to flower (approximately 4-6 weeks after planting). To pollinate, use one or more of the following methods:
- Place an open hand inside plant branches and gently move your hand back and forth to shake the plant and spread the pollen. Do this carefully to avoid injury.
- Use one cotton swab or fine brush to gently rub the flowers of different plants and promote the effects of cross-pollination.
Flowering and Fruiting
- Change the water and add proportionate nutrition once per week, ensuring the plant can absorb enough potassium so that it can flower and fruit.
- In a high-temperature environment, the nutrient solution concentration will be high due to rapid water evaporation. Be sure to change the water once about 7-15 days.
Harvesting
- The Gardening Kit works best with a harvesting method called “cut and come again.” Simply put, you enjoy frequent small harvests and then watch as the plants rapidly regrow – ready for harvest again and again.
- Enjoy frequent, smaller harvests for the first month or two until plants mature to offer larger harvests.
- Harvest often to maintain a healthy garden, but never take more than 1/3 of each plant at a time.
- For most salad greens and herbs, cut the top 2 inches off the entire garden, or harvest large leaves individually by cutting them off from the base of the plant.
- Here we list some plants’ optimal temperatures and illumination times. It is for reference only. The suitable growth requirements for plants in different families change in terms of: air humidity, ventilation effect, and nutrient content conditions.
Product Maintenance
Changing water
- In a high-temperature environment, because the water evaporates faster, the concentration of the nutrient solution will be higher, so you can change the water about every 7-15 days.
- After the plants bloom, change the water once a week to ensure that the potassium content is sufficient. There is a drain hole at the back of the water tank. Remove the rubber plug and the water will flow out.
Note: When changing water, always remember to add nutrition in proportion.
Cleaning Pump
Clean the water pump at least once a month.
-
Step 1. Turn the power off.
-
Step 2. Remove the top cover of the water tank.
-
Step 3. Open the shell of the water pump and take out the cotton to clean. Rinse it with water ONLY. Any washing liquid will harm the nutrition balance.
-
Step 4. Install it back.
-
Do NOT plug the adapter when there is no water in the water tank, it will shorten the life of the pump.
Important Note: During the planting process, if there are dead plants and other badly growing plants, they should be removed in time to prevent root erosion bacteria from affecting the growth of other plants. If root rot has occurred, it is recommended to clean and disinfect the water tank to avoid affecting the next planting.
Place Your Garden
- On a sturdy, water-tolerant surface.
- In a 59° F-86° F (15-30°C) environment (optimal).
- Beyond the reach of children or pets.
- Away from direct sources of heat ( stove, furnace vents, e.g.,) or cold ( window drafts, A/C vents, e.g.,).
- The Indoor Garden Kit does not need additional light or a sunny window. In fact, too much direct sunlight can overheat your plants.
Troubleshooting
Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
- Why do only a few of the plants grow and once grown, they quickly wither?
- The seeds you purchase make a difference. For best results, purchase seeds from reliable manufacturers and avoid purchasing seeds that are not suitable for water hydroponic devices.
- Ensure you are using the correct proportion of nutrient solution to water.
- Place it in a 59° F-86° F (15-30°C) environment.
- Why does the pump start with noise?
- Take out the filter cotton and check whether there is a jam inside.
- When the water level is below the pump, add water to 5L-6L, and the noise will stop.
- Can sponges be reused?
- It’s reusable if stems of a plant are pulled out from the sponges, but we don’t recommend doing so as it’s not as good as the first use. We have specific links to purchase extra sponges.
- Does it kill the plant to remove it from a sponge (if I want to move it to a pot, for example)?
- Normally, it won’t, but you had better wait until it’s vigorous when the survival rate is high.
- Why doesn’t it germinate?
- It may differ by temperature. You can try to cultivate it in the soil to test whether it is the problem of the seeds.
- Why doesn’t it bloom or bear fruit?
- Make sure the nutrition is enough. Always top off the water level and add liquid nutrients proportionally.
- How to prevent the sponge from getting moldy / algae?
- 12 basket labels are included in the package to prevent the sponge from getting moldy/algae. You can also cover the sponge with an opaque film, such as tin foil.
