Installation Instructions
Step 1. Elevate Your Ceiling with Furring Strips or Plywood
Create a grid pattern using 1” x 2” or 1” x 3” furring strips. Check the bottom of the ceiling joists for any bows and make adjustments as needed. Install the first furring strips along the room’s perimeter, referencing cornice dimensions. Attach the remaining strips from the center, radiating outwards, ensuring they are placed perpendicular to the ceiling joists at 12” intervals.
For a simpler approach, cover the ceiling with sheets of plywood. This method eliminates the need for building a grid pattern with furring strips.
Step 2. Ensuring Level Furring Strips
Create loops at the ends of a string and hang them on nails placed across the room, opposite to each other. Check that the furring strips and the string are even throughout the entire length of the room. If any gaps exist between the string and the board, adjust the furring strips by inserting shims (wedge- shaped pieces of wood) to raise low areas and achieve a level surface.
Step 3. Installing Blocking Strips for Added Stability
After ensuring the furring strips are installed and level, it’s time to add blocking strips. These strips should be placed cross-wise between the furring strips, creating a strong support system. Install blocking strips at 2-foot intervals to provide a nailing surface on all four sides of each 2’x2′ panel.
Step 4. Establishing Center, Baselines, and Layout
Find the center of your ceiling by stretching a chalk line between opposite corners, identifying the point where the lines intersect. Create two parallel lines through this center point, aligning with opposite walls, to serve as baselines for your tin ceiling installation.
Strive for balance and symmetry in your tin ceiling by ensuring that panels touching one wall are the same size as those touching the opposite wall. Carefully calculate the number of tiles that will fit along the baselines, accounting for overlap (typically around 1/3″), to effectively plan and execute an impeccable tin ceiling layout.
Step 5. Safely Nailing Up Your Tin Ceiling
As you begin the installation process, ensure your hands are protected by wearing heavy-duty work gloves. Tin ceiling panels can have sharp edges, so exercise caution to prevent any potential injuries.
Initiate the installation from the center of the room and gradually work your way outward. Align each tile with its neighboring panel, ensuring a seamless connection, and allowing their edges to overlap. To incorporate an aesthetic pattern, drive decorative conehead nails every 6 inches along the seams. These nails will blend seamlessly into the overall design, becoming part of the cohesive pattern.
Tools for Cutting Tin Ceiling Panels: To cut and shape tin ceiling panels effectively, you will need two key tools: straight tin snips and aviation snips designed for curved cuts. These tools are invaluable when navigating obstacles like overhead light boxes or creating precise miters in your installation.
Step 6. Install the Metal Cornice
Ensure a seamless finish by selecting a cornice that matches your desired dimensions. Install the cornice by nailing it into the ceiling, through the panels, and into the wall at 6″ intervals. Shape the inside corners of the cornice using a pair of snips. Trim the first cornice piece with a straight cut and fit it into place. Cut the second piece on an angle with a notched edge, allowing it to slip over the first piece and blending the corners.
Use aviation snips to cut miters for outside corners. Align the two strips of cornice as they will meet on the ceiling, and scribe the curved edge on each piece. Score the piece to be installed second by making 1/8″ snips into the metal. Blend the cut edges by gently tapping with a hammer and using the head of a nail to blend or caulk the seam.
Take care to ensure the corners and seams of the cornice blend seamlessly with the overall design of your tin ceiling. A gentle touch and attention to detail will ensure a cohesive and polished appearance.
Step 7. Preserving Unfinished Metal
To ensure the longevity and optimal appearance of any steel material, it is essential to apply a protective coating such as an oil-based product. This coating serves as a barrier against corrosion and adds a layer of durability. For those seeking options with pre-finished styles, Tin Ceiling Xpress offers a diverse range of professionally pre-finished tin ceiling tiles and cornices. These products arrive beautifully coated, ready to be installed and admired.
Step 8. Paint your ceiling (Optional)
When painting your new metal ceiling, it is crucial to select oil-based primer and paint. Using water-based products can lead to rusting of the steel. This precaution ensures the longevity and appearance of your painted ceiling. If you have unfinished steel, it’s important to clean it thoroughly before painting. Use a wax and grease cleaner to remove any residue or contaminants. Our pre-finished panels and white panels do not require cleaning.
Exercise caution when nailing up the ceiling to avoid scratching pre-finished tiles. These tiles are delicately coated, and any inadvertent damage can impact their overall appearance. For those who opt for vintage hand painted finished tiles, rest assured that these tiles are more resilient. Their thicker coatings and textured surfaces effectively conceal any scratches or dings, ensuring an enduring aesthetic appeal.
TIN CEILING TILES (Lay In)
Required Tools
- Heavy-Duty work gloves
- Cross tees
- Lay-in ceiling panels
- Tape measure
- Wall angles
- Suspension wires
- Main tees
- Studs
- Nails
- Aviation snips
Ensure that your hands are well-protected while you are handling metal ceiling tiles. The edges of these tiles are very sharp!
Installation Instructions
Step 1. Efficient Planning for Suspended Ceiling Installation
Measure the dimensions of the room and plot them on graph paper to plan the installation of your new tin ceiling. Purchase enough 2’x2′ tin ceiling tiles from Tin Ceiling Xpress, accounting for any installation challenges by acquiring a slightly larger quantity than required
Step 2. Installation of Wall Angles for Room Perimeter
Utilize a level to draw a line around the room’s perimeter, ensuring it is parallel to the floor. This line should be positioned at least 3″ or 4″ below the existing ceiling to allow for adequate clearance. Take your time in securing the wall angles to the wall by properly nailing them to the studs. It is crucial to ensure that the bottom flange of each wall angle rests precisely on the line you have drawn around the room’s perimeter, guaranteeing a seamless and level installation.
Step 3. Installation of Wall Angles for Room Perimeter
Stretch a tight line from the top of the wall angle at each desired main tee position. Cut suspension wires 12″ longer than the distance between the old ceiling and the stretched line for proper length. Install the first suspension wire for each main tee above where the first cross tee meets. Secure suspension wires to the ceiling using screw hooks or nails.
Repeat this process every 4″, ensuring each wire is stretched to eliminate kinks and forms a 90-degree bend where it meets the level line.
Step 3. Install the Main tees
Determine Distance and Locate Slot: Measure the distance between the wall and the first cross tee along the top flange of the main tee. Identify the slot immediately beyond this point.
Measure and Cut Main Tee: From the identified slot, measure back the same distance and subtract 1/8″ to accommodate the thickness of the wall angle. Using a saw, cut the main tee at this marked point.
Installing Level Main Tees: Install the main tees, ensuring they are level with the previously installed wall angles. Aligning the cuts and carefully positioning them will help achieve a seamless and level installation.
Step 4. Installing Cross Tees and Drop Ceiling Tiles for a Seamless Finish
Push the ends of the cross tees into the slots of the main tees, completing your developing grid. Install the cross tees every 2′ to accommodate the measurements of the tin ceiling tiles.
Lift each tile into the lay-in grid, aligning them accurately, and then let them gently fall into place. This process ensures a secure and seamless installation of your new drop ceiling.
