FAQ :

  1. Q: Do I need any special tools for the installation?
A: Basic tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, and hex wrenches are recommended for a smooth installation process.

  2. Q: Can I use these parts with other brands of RC cars?
A: These parts are designed specifically for RDS models and may not be compatible with other brands without modifications.

RDS Hop Up Installation Instructions

This instruction sheet is for the following RDS Hop Up parts:

  • RER31528 – Front Knuckles w/ Steering stops (Aluminum)(1pr)
  • RER31526 – Front Lower Suspension Arms (Aluminum)(1pr)
  • RER31527 – Transmission Housing (Aluminum)(1pc)
  • RER31529 – Spur Gear Adapter (Aluminum)(1pc)

RER31528 – Front Knuckles w/ Steering stops (Aluminum)(1pr)

  1. 1. Remove stock knuckle assemblies by popping the rod ends off of the ball studs.REDCAT-RER31528-Front-Knuckles-with-Steering-Stops- \(1\)

  2. Swap ball studs and axles over to new knuckles. This is a picture of the stock plastic knuckles overlaid with the new aluminum knuckles on the RIGHT side of the car. As you can see, we have removed the 2 outer positions of the knuckle as those were rarely used by customers from what we had seen. The red dot on the picture is where the included steering stop should be placed.
Upper and lower ball studs should be installed with a 2mm spacer on each, as shown, in order to maintain stock geometry. It is possible to run without the spacers in order to allow a less offset wheel up front. The top of the knuckle has 2 hole positions. This allows you to change your “trail” of the front wheels. The forward position will add trail and make the front tires more stable. The rear position, which matches the stock plastic parts, will make the steering quicker, but will reduce stability.

  3. Install new knuckles back onto chassis, note ball stud and steering stop position. You may have to change your front alignment depending on what outer ball stud position you were using before.

  4. Depending on how much angle you want, you can space the steering stop down to contact different points of the lower rod end on the lower arm. Without any spacers, this knuckle allows maximum angle without steering lock-up that can occur depending on alignment settings.

RER31526 – Front Lower Suspension Arms (Aluminum)(1pr)

  1. Remove lower arms by removing rear toe block and sliding assemblies out.
  2. Swap all turnbuckles, ball studs, and pins over to new arms. You may have to take the rod ends off the turnbuckles and flip the direction in order to have them thread into the new arms since the threads on turnbuckles are reversed on each side. Do not force them.REDCAT-RER31528-Front-Knuckles-with-Steering-Stops- \(5\)
  3.  Clamp down turnbuckles with included screws. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, the goal is to get rid  of the side to side slop. You may be able to still rotate the turnbuckle, but that will not affect the function of the arm. New lower shock positions are featured on the lower arms.
    • The new arms have their outermost position set to the same as the innermost position on the stock plastic arms. This allows more wheel clearance at high angles and softens the front suspension. They also have a new further inset shock location for an even softer front end.
    • These arms are also 2mm narrower than the stock plastic arms so you can narrow the front end more than stock. Take this into account when using setup sheet

RER31527 – Transmission Housing (Aluminum)(1pc)

  1. Remove ESC/Motor and ESC plate.

  2. Remove front, rear, and bottom transmission mounting screws.

  3. Disassemble stock plastic transmission housing, you will be keeping the bearings, diff, idler  gears, main idler shaft, and cross pins.

  4. Insert 5x10x4 bearings into right transmission housing and main idler shaft support. Make sure  you do this BEFORE bolting the main idler shaft support onto the housing.

  5. Insert cross pins, idler gears, and main idler shaft into right transmission housing.
Attach main idler shaft support to left transmission housing using included 3x M3x6 screws.REDCAT-RER31528-Front-Knuckles-with-Steering-Stops-

  6. Put transmission housings together and insert cross braces using included 4x M3x8 screws.

  7. Bolt on shock tower braces using included 4x M3x6 screws. Note the orientation, the shock tower braces go in front of the standoffs on the transmission case, not behind.

  8. Bolt transmission onto chassis with included 4x countersunk M3x6 screws on the bottom and 2x M3x6 screws on the front of the transmission.

  9. Reinstall shock tower

  10. Install differential. When using the stock RDS differential, use 3 of the included shims on each side of the diff housing before putting the bearings on, as pictured. When using an aftermarket differential, you will need to try different amounts of shims to minimize the left to right movement of the differential.REDCAT-RER31528-Front-Knuckles-with-Steering-Stops- \(18\)

  11.  Install bearing caps.

  12. Reinstall motor mount.

  13. Reinstall spur gear hub. New lightweight spur gear adapter pictured.

  14. Reinstall ESC plate and associated electronics.
