Terrarium
A terrarium is basically a garden in a box. Inside you can place rocks, soil
and plants to watch this little ecosystem grow and change. The included
terrarium can also be used for observing small animals like insects or as a
transport box.
Handling your terrarium
- To remove the lid of the terrarium, pull the fastenings on both short sides of the lid outwards and upwards.
- For quick and easy access, the terrarium is equipped with a transparent hatch. Just lift it up to feed your animals or water your plants.
- For convenient transport of your terrarium, use the handle on the top of the lid.
Building a plant terrarium
Create your own plant terrarium by layering gravel or small stones, sphagnum
moss or a piece of landscape fabric and soil in the container. Then,
delicately place suitable plants you have selected for your terrarium like
ferns, mosses, or succulents inside. If you wish, you can also add decorative
items like shells or figurines to make your terrarium look even more
appealing. Water the plants sparingly and observe the water cycle in action as
well as the growth and development of your plants.
Plants are the lungs of the Earth playing a crucial role in our planet’s health by producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide during the process of photosynthesis. There are around 391,000 species of vascular plants currently known to science, and they are found in almost every habitat from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Just like humans and animals, plants need care, attention, and the right environment to grow and thrive.
By observing your terrarium, you will witness the fascinating life cycle of your plants and understand the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Butterfly net
The butterfly net can be useful for gathering samples, which can later be
observed through your magnifying glass or jar.
Adjusting the length of the shaft
The shaft of the butterfly net consists of two parts joined by a connector. To
adjust the length, simply add or remove the upper part of the shaft as well as
the connector.
Collection tool
The collection tool is designed for collecting specimens for your research.
Using your collection tool
- Hold the collection tool with one hand, placing your thumb in the small and your index and middle fingers in the large handle – just as you would with a pair of scissors. Ensure you have a firm but comfortable grip.
- When you have found an interesting object, open the clamp and approach the object.
- Swiftly yet gently, close the tool around the object.
- Bring the tool closer to your eyes for observation.
- Examine the object’s colour, shape, size, and other distinguishable features. Your magnifying glass may be used for closer inspection.
Magnifying glass
Exploring the small wonders of the world – the magnifying glass is an amazing
tool for your exciting observations. It shows you everything larger. You can
take it everywhere and have a quick look at invisible details on interesting
rocks, beautiful flowers, etc. It is also ideal for examining what is going on
in your terrarium.
Using your magnifying glass
- Hold the magnifying glass by the handle, keeping it comfortably between your thumb and your first two fingers.
- Bring the magnifying glass close to the object until it appears clear and enlarged.
- Adjust the distance between the magnifying glass and the object by moving it closer or further away until the object comes into sharp focus.
- Once the object is in focus, move the magnifying glass slowly across the object to examine different areas. Keep your movements steady to maintain focus.
Compass with built-in whistle
Not sure which direction to head in? The kit comes with a durable compass,
which features a floating needle to help you find your bearings. What’s more,
the compass is equipped with a whistle to alert others if you are lost or in
danger. NOTE: Do not use your compass near metallic objects (e.g. bridge
railings made of metal) or magnetic devices (e.g. mobile phones). These
objects interfere with a correct reading because the compass needle is
magnetic as well.
Understanding your compass
- The compass dial shows the four cardinal directions N (north) – S (south) – E (east) – W (west) as well as the intermediate directions NE (northeast) – SE (southeast) – SW (southwest) – NW (northwest). It also has a degree dial that displays all 360 degrees of the circle.
- The magnetic needle has a red end to indicate north and a white end pointing at south.
- The orienting arrow is fixed and aligned to north within the dial.
Holding the compass correctly
Place the compass flat on your palm and your palm in front of your chest. This
is the correct compass stance when travelling. When using a map, place the map
on a flat surface and put the compass on the map.
Checking your heading
To find out which direction you are heading, hold the compass in front of you
so that the orienting arrow faces the way you are walking. Then rotate your
palm so that the N (for North) aligns with the red end of the compass needle.
Now you can check the direction you are facing on the compass.
Periscope
Look around corners, over walls or fallen trees: your periscope offers great possibilities for exciting discoveries. Inside the tube there are parallel mirrors positioned at both ends at a 45-degree angle. That way the periscope allows you to explore nature from different perspectives. It is perfect for observing shy animals without disturbing them, because you can watch them without being seen. The periscope also provides a glimpse into elevated areas which are usually beyond your reach. Use the device, for example, to inspect the insects living high up in your garden hedge.
Using your periscope
- Hold the periscope firmly with both hands.
- Position one end of the periscope towards the object you want to observe.
- Look through the other end, which is now the eyepiece. What can you see? Maybe a bird in a tree or bugs on a bark?
- Explore different areas by moving your periscope slowly.
NOTE: The periscope is not suitable for use underwater as the housing is not waterproof.
Magnifying jar
The magnifying jar is perfect for observing suitable samples repeatedly or
over longer periods of time.
Using your magnifying jar
- To open the magnifying jar, flip the lid upwards.
- Place the object you want to observe inside the jar.
- To close the magnifying jar, flip the lid downwards.
- Look through the lens into the jar and note how different your object looks due to the larger magnification.
