Product Usage Instructions
Installation
- Read the safety instructions provided in the user manual carefully before installation.
- Ensure that the power supply is turned off before proceeding with the installation.
- Mount the SDM230 series meter on a DIN rail in a suitable location.
- Connect the appropriate wires to the meter according to the electrical network configuration.
- If using RS485 Modbus communication, connect the meter to the remote monitoring system using an RS485 cable.
- If using M-bus communication, connect the meter to the remote monitoring system using an M-bus cable.
Configuration
The SDM230 series meter offers various configuration options depending on
the model:
- For RS485 Modbus communication, use the provided set-up screens to configure the RS485 port.
- For the SDM230-Mbus model, use the provided set-up screens to configure the M-bus port.
- For the SDM230-2T model, set up the multi tariffs according to your requirements using the provided set-up screens.
Usage
The SDM230 series meter is designed to measure and display the characteristics of a single-phase two-wire network. It can be used for energy and power monitoring applications, as well as solar PV measurements. The meter supports bi-directional measurement, making it suitable for import and export energy monitoring.
Depending on the model, the meter can measure and display various parameters including voltage (U), current (I), power (P), reactive power (Q), apparent power (S), power factor (PF), frequency (Hz), demand (Dmd), energy consumption (kWh), and reactive energy consumption (kVArh).
Pulse Output
The meter provides two pulse outputs:
- Pulse Output 1: This output can be configured to generate pulses representing total/import/export kWh or kVArh. The pulse constant can be set to generate 1 pulse per 0.001/0.01/0.1/1 kWh/kVArh (default is 0.001 export kWh). The pulse width can be set to 200/100/60ms.
- Pulse Output 2: This output is non-configurable and fixed with active kWh (Imp). The constant is 1000imp/kWh.
Remote Communication
The meter supports remote communication with other AMR/SCADA systems:
- For RS485 Modbus communication, use the provided RS485 serial port with Modbus RTU protocol to remotely monitor and control the unit.
- For the SDM230-Mbus model, use the provided M-BUS serial port with M-BUS protocol to remotely monitor and control the unit.
Dual Source Measurement (Only for SDM230-2T)
The SDM230-2T model can measure energy from two different power supplies.
For example, when the public grid is powered off and anelectric generator is
on, the meter automatically switches to tariff 2 measurement.

Introduction
This document provides operating, maintenance and installation instructions
for the SDM230 series made by Eastron Electronic Co., Ltd. The SDM230 series
measures and displays the characteristics of a single-phase two wires (1p2w)
network. The SDM230 series covers 5 models:SDM230-Modbus,SDM230-Pulse,SDM230-
Mbus, SDM230-2T and SDM230M-DI.
The bi-directional measurement makes the meter suitable for import and e xp o
rt e n e rg y a n d p o w e r monitoring applications, and also perfect for
solar PV measurements. With RS485 Modbus and M-bus port, the meter is easy to
remotely communicate with other AMR/SCADA systems.

Pulse Output
- The meter provides two pulse outputs. Both pulse outputs are passive type.
- Pulse output 1 can be set to generate pulses to represent total / import/export kWh or kVArh.
- The pulse constant can be set to generate 1 pulse per: 0.001/0.01/0.1/1kWh/kVArh (default is 0.001 export kWh). Pulse width: 200/100/60ms
- Pulse output 2 is non-configurable. It is fixed with active kWh (Imp). The constant is 1000imp/kWh.
RS485 Serial – Modbus RTU
RS485 serial port with Modbus RTU protocol to provide a means of remotely
monitoring and controlling the unit. Set-up screens are provided for setting
up the RS485 port.
Mbus for SDM230-Mbus
This unit has an M-BUS serial port with M-BUS protocol to provide a means of
remotely monitoring and controlling the unit. Set-up screens are provided for
setting up the M-bus port.
Dual Source Measurement for SDM230-2T
This unit can measure energy from two different power supplies. For example,
when the public grid is powered off and the electric generator is on, the
meter switches to tariff 2 measurement automatically.
The meter can also be used as a tariff meter. The tariff is controlled by an
external time relay.

Initialization Display
Scroll Display by Buttons:
After initialization and self-checking program, the meter displays the
measured values. The default page is total kWh. If the user wants to check
other information, he needs to press the scroll button on the front panel.

The pulse output 1 can be set to generate pulses to represent total kWh,
total kVArh, import kWh, export kWh, import kVArh, and export kVArh.
Constant can be set to 1000/100/10/1 impulse per kWh or kVArh.Pulse width
200/100/60mS.
ATTENTION: Pulse output must be fed as shown in the wiring diagram on the left. Scrupulously respect polarities and the connection mode. Opto-coupler with potential-free SPST-NO Contact.

Digital Inputs
For SDM230M-DI only
The meter is equipped with two digital inputs. An input signal is detected
on a digital input if a voltage of at least 5V and a maximum of 24V DC@0.1W is
applied.
RS485 Output for Modbus RTU

The meter provides an RS485 port for remote communication.
Modbus RTU is the protocol applied. For Modbus RTU, the following RS485
communication parameters can be configured from the set-up menu.
