Product Usage Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Dethatcher

1. Ensure that the appliance cord is secure and undamaged.
2. Check that the extension cord you are using is in good condition and suitable for outdoor use. Refer to Table 1 for the correct size to use based on cord length and ampere rating.
3. If using an extension cord, make a knot as shown in Figure 1, or use one of the plug-receptacle retaining straps or connectors described in the manual to prevent unintentional disconnection during operation.

Step 2: Operating the Dethatcher

1. Make sure the dethatcher is placed on the ground and stable footing is maintained throughout the operation.
2. Ensure that the switch is in the off position before plugging in the appliance.
3. Plug in the dethatcher to the power supply.
4. Hold the handle firmly and press the switch to turn on the dethatcher.
5. Push the dethatcher forward, allowing the rotating blades to remove thatch from the lawn.
6. Continue this motion across the entire lawn, making sure to overlap each pass slightly for even dethatching.
7. Monitor the dethatcher and adjust the depth settings as necessary to achieve the desired results.

Step 3: Finishing and Maintenance

1. Once you have completed dethatching, turn off the dethatcher and unplug it from the power supply.
2. Clean any debris or thatch from the blades and housing of the dethatcher using a brush or compressed air.
3. Inspect the blades for any signs of damage or wear. Replace or sharpen the blades if necessary.
4. Store the dethatcher in a dry and secure location, away from children and pets.

Q: Can I use this dethatcher in wet conditions?

1. Avoid Dangerous Environment – Don’t use appliances in damp locations.

2. Don’t Use In Rain.

   • The use of rubber gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors. Wear a protective hair covering to contain long hair.

5. Use Safety Glasses – Always use a face or dust mask if the operation is dusty.

6. Use Right Appliance – Do not use an appliance for any job except that for which it is intended.

7. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or outlet(s) to be used for the gardening appliance.
   Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety.

8. Warning -To reduce the risk of electric shock, use only with an extension cord intended for outdoor use, such as an extension cord of cord type SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJOW-A, SJTW-A. or SJTOW-A.

9. Extension Cord – Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. Table 1 shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gage number, the heavier the cord. To reduce the risk of disconnection of the appliance cord from the extension cord during operation:

10. Make a knot as shown in Figure 1; or

11. Use one of the plug-receptacle retaining straps or connectors described in this manual.

12. Avoid Unintentional Starting – Don’t carry a plugged-in appliance with the finger on the switch. Be sure the switch is off when plugging in.

13. Don’t Abuse Cord – Never carry the appliance by a cord or yank it to disconnect from the receptacle.

    • Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.

14. Don’t grasp the exposed cutting blades or cutting edges when picking up or holding the appliance.

15. Don’t Force Appliance – It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed.

16. Don’t Overreach – Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

17. Stay Alert – Watch what you are doing. Use common sense. Do not operate appliances when you are tired.

18. Disconnect Appliance – Disconnect the appliance from the power supply when not in use, before servicing, when changing accessories such as blades, and the like.

19. Store Idle Appliances Indoors – When not in use, appliances should be stored indoors in a dry, and high or locked-up place – out of reach of children.

20. Maintain Appliance With Care – Keep cutting edge sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

    • Inspect appliance cord periodically, and if damaged, have it repaired by an authorized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace them if damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.

21. Check Damaged Parts – Before further use of the appliance, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function.

    • Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other condition that may affect its operation.
    • A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless indicated elsewhere in this manual.

FOR ALL DOUBLE-INSULATED APPLIANCES

1. Replacement Parts
   • When servicing use only identical replacement parts.
2. Polarized Appliance Connections
   • To reduce the risk of electric shock, this appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) and will require the use of a polarized extension cord. The appliance plug will fit into a polarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord will require the use of a polarized wall outlet.
   • This plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper wall outlet. Do not change the equipment plug, extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any way.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

• NOTE: Read the operator’s manual.

INTENDED USE

• This product is intended for domestic, dethatching, and scarifying lawns. This appliance is not intended for dethatching on hard materials such as steel rods, stones, and other hard materials that exceed its cutting capacity and will damage the tines.
• WARNING: To avoid injury from unexpected starting or electrical shock, during assembly or adjustment, do not plug the power cord into a source of power.

ASSEMBLY

ASSEMBLING HANDLES

INSTALLING THE LOWER HANDLE

1. Insert the lower handle into the housing hole. (See Fig. A1)
2. Align the two holes on the handle and the housing. Use the supplied screw to fasten the lower handle to the housing. (See Fig. A2)

INSTALLING THE UPPER HANDLE

1. Position the upper handle to make the holes line up with the lower handle holes.
2. Align the square holes in the lower handle with the upper handle.
3. Insert the supplied hex bolt (a) through the holes from the inside of the handlebar. (See Fig. A3)
4. Thread the handle knob (7) onto the hex bolt to tighten it securely into place.
   • Note: Install the extension cord retainer to the upper handle with the wire side before installing the upper handle with the lower handle.

ASSEMBLING THE GRASS COLLECTION BAG
Lift the back cover first and hang up the grass collection bag (13) onto the dethatcher. (See Fig. B) EXTENSION CORD RETAINER (See Fig. C) After securing the extension cord, use the extension cord retainer to prevent the extension cord from disconnecting from the power cord in which the tool is in use. Attach cord retainer to handle.
ADJUSTING THE DETHATCHING DEPTH (See Fig. D1, D2) WARNING: Before you adjust the dethatching depth, turn off the power, unplug the tool, and ensure the motor has stopped.

1. The dethatching depth is adjusted by turning the adjusting knob. You can choose from three different depth settings by pulling out and turning adjust knob.
2. When setting “1”, the high setting is locked in.
   • The dethatching depth is approx. 3mm above the ground. Select depth setting “1” when transporting the dethatcher.
3. When setting “2”, the middle setting is locked in.
   • The dethatcher depth is approx. -3mm.
4. When setting “3”, the low setting is locked in. The dethatcher depth is approx -9mm.
   • WARNING: The adjust knob must be firmly locked into place! At the beginning, it is best to select depth setting “1” at the start. You can then switch to setting “2” when the dethatcher tines have become worn.

OPERATION

STARTING AND STOPPING (SEE Fig. E) To start:

1. Plug the dethatcher into an approved outdoor extension cord.
2. First press and hold the safety lock-out button.
   • And then pull the operating bail handle to the handle bar to operate.

To stop: Release the operating bail handle.

REPLACE THE DETHATCHER WHEEL

Note: If the dethatcher wheel is wear and tear, replace it. The new individual dethatcher wheel is sold separately.

1. Disconnect the dethatcher from the power source. Allow sufficient time for moving parts to stop.
2. Turn the dethatcher over.
3. Use the supplied wrench to loosen the two screw nuts. (See Fig. F1)
4. Take out of the plastic cover. (See Fig. F2)
5. Lift and pull the worn or broken dethatcher wheel out of the machine. (See Fig. F3)
6. Replace with new ones.

REPLACE THE TINES

If the tines are broken/missing, then follow steps below to replace them.

1. Use a hex key wrench to take out two screws and remove the plate covering; (See Fig. F2, F3)
2. Take out the screw inside the tine reel; (See Fig. G1)
3. Remove the bearing and then bushing; (See Fig. G2)
4. Slide spring wheels off the reel until the desired spring replacement is reached; (See Fig G3)
5. Remove the spring wheel that needs replacement; (See Fig G4)
6. Place the new spring into the wheel, and pay attention to keep the same direction as the other spring. (See Fig. G5)
7. Assemble the rest of the spring wheels taken out before, and pay attention to the location of the shaft and wheels; (See Fig G6)
8. Assemble the bushing and then bearing, and retighten the screw; (See Fig. G7)
9. Assemble the wheel to the unit. (See Fig. G8)

WORKING HINTS FOR YOUR TOOL

Observe all the relevant warnings when using your dethatcher.

1. To lock after a lawn properly, you need to do more than just mow it once a week throughout the Summer. The lawn will benefit from a vigorous dethatching of the grass to remove the dead matter, moss, and weeds that disfigure a lawn.
   • The build-up of dead grass provides a mat of absorbent fibers which prevents water getting through to the ground.
2. Do not force your dethatcher through grass that is too long. It is recommended that your dethatcher should not be in grass that is longer than 75mm.
3. Do not use it in damp conditions.
4. To obtain the best results, use the dethatcher at the beginning and end of each grass-cutting season.

MAINTENANCE

• Disconnect from the main electric supply.
• Do not use an extension cable that shows signs of damage. Fit a new cable completely – do not make any permanent or temporary repairs
• Always keep your unit clean and free from grass cuttings, especially the underside of the cutter deck and the air vents. Check all electrical cables at regular intervals, looking for signs of wear, abrasion, or other damage.
• Remove the debris stuck to the bottom of the machine each time you finish operating it. Clean all plastic components with a damp cloth.
• WARNING: Do not use solvents or cleaning fluids as these may damage the plastic component of your unit.
• Store in a secure, dry place out of the reach of children. Do not place other objects on the product.
• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid a hazard.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Abnormal noise.

**** Clattering in the unit. Whistling sound.

| Foreign objects on the dethatcher cylinder are hitting the dethatcher.

**** Foreign objects blocking the dethatching cylinder.

| 1. Switch off the dethatcher, remove the power cord from the outlet and wait until the cylinder has stopped rotating.
2. Remove foreign objects.
3. Check the dethatcher immediately.
Whistling sound.| Belt slipping.| Contact an authorized service center.
The motor does not start.| Faulty cable. The conductor cross-section of the extension cable may be too low.

**** Motor overheating protection.

| Contact an electrician.

**** Stop and rest for 30 minutes before restart.

The dethatcher is difficult to push.| Blocked by foreign objects.

**** The grass is too tall.

| 1. Switch off the motor, remove the plug from the socket and wait until the dethatcher has stopped rotating.
2. Remove the foreign objects.
3. After approximately one minute, switch on the dethatcher.
Mow the lawn before dethatching.
Dethatching results are not satisfactory.| Springtime wear. Belt faulty.

The lawn has grown too tall.

| Adjust the dethatcher cylinder. Contact an authorized service center. Mow the lawn before using the de-thatcher.
