Screws that need to be screwed into the vehicle roof or nuts be tightened to
the torque specification of the screw. If screws are screwed into slot nuts,
the torque specification applies to T-nuts!
Bolts that get torqued into nuts or nutserts are torqued down with the torque
value of the bolt. If a bolt gets torqued down into a slot nut the torque
value for the slot nut gets used!
Before installing your horntools product check if all parts are in the package and are free of defects! If something is missing or damaged contact your horntools dealer and don’t start the installation.
For this assembly you also need
- Screw lock (e.g. Loctite 243)
- Silicone
Exposing the threaded bushings in the vehicle roof | uncover nutserts in the cabin roof
- There are M8 thread inserts under the plastic covers on the vehicle roof attached (Fig.01). Dismantle the plastic covers.
- Attention: These cannot be reassembled!
- Using a knife or similar, carefully remove the plastic closure of the thread inserts cut open.
- On the cabin roof are M8 outserts, which are underneath the plastic covers (Fig.01).
- Demount plastic covers, they can’t be mounted again.
- Use a knife to cut the plastic cap of the threaded insert open.
- Threaded inserts in roof (rear) exposed / nutserts in cabin roof opened (rear)
- The distance between the holes (from left to right) must be measured as this is for a later step is required.
- Measure the distance between the holes from left to right and write it down for later.
mounting of the cabin brackets
- Mounting foot bolted to the ExRoof roof rack / mounting bracket bolted to the ExRoof
- Mounting feet screwed to the roof rack / mounting brackets attached to the rack platform
- Attach the mounting feet with the slot nuts (which can be screwed into the profile) to the roof rack screw so that they can still be moved. The distance between the fastening openings corresponds to the previously written values (as shown in Fig. 02 & 03).
- All screws that are screwed into the screw-in slot nuts are tightened to 17Nm and secured with a screw locking agent (Loctite 243 or similar).
- Using the slot nuts (that can be rotated into the profile) attach the mounting feet to the rack platform. Don’t tighten the bolts fully yet, ensure that you can still move the brackets. Adjust the brackets so the distance between the mounting holes meets the one you measured earlier on the car (as shown in Fig. 02 & Fig. 03).
- All bolts that get bolted into the swivel-type slot nuts are torqued down with 17Nm and secured with thread loose (Loctite 243 or similar).
- Carefully place the roof rack and feet on the vehicle roof. Check whether the openings for the Align the screws with the threads in the vehicle roof and move the mounting feet if necessary and fix it with the M8x25mm screws and washers. Apply a light film of silicone to the Threads of the screws to prevent water from getting inside through the threads.
- Tighten the screws using the information in the screw list.
- Place the roof rack with its mounting brackets on the car roof. Ensure that the holes align with the threaded holes in the car roof. If necessary, move the mounting brackets to make them align. Using the M8x25mm bolts with washers bolt the assembly down. Apply a light layer of silicone on the threads of the bolts to prevent water from going through the threads. Torque down all bolts in addition to the torque figures of the bolt list above.
attachment of the deflector
- To mount the deflector at the front of the roof rack, you must first attach the 5 large slot nuts using the following Instructions can be inserted on the underside of the front cross profile.
- To attach the deflector in the front of the roof rack insert the five big slot nuts into the lower side of the frontmost transverse profiles.
- Insert the slotted nut into the profile as shown in Fig. 4 – make sure that the “O” marking is facing you!
- This is the only way it will be wedged correctly when you screw in the screw!
- Insert the slot groove shown in Fig. 4 into the profile – take care that the “O” marking is facing to you. Only in this orientation, the slot nut get clamped correctly when the bolt gets torqued down.
- Insert the slot nut with the “O” marking facing down (red arrow) / insertion of the slotted nut with the “O” marking facing you (red arrow)
- Slot nut screwed in / slot nut locked
- Tighten M8 screws with 10 Nm, use screw locking agent (Loctite 243 or similar)!
- Make sure that the screws used above the slotted nut do not touch the profile – suitable ones Choose screw length!
- Torque down the M8 bolts with 10 Nm, use thread looser (Locitite 243 or similar).
- Take special care to ensure that the bolt does not touch the aluminum profile above the slot nut – use the proper bolt length.
- As shown in Fig. 06, attach the deflector with the M8x14mm screws in the middle under the front Cross profile. To do this, the sliding blocks must be pushed into the correct position. Use a Screw locking agent (Loctite 243 or similar) for the deflector screws!
- Attach the deflector like Fig. 06 shows and torque down the bolts in addition to the torque numbers from the bolt list above, use the M8x14mm bolts. To do so you must adjust the position of the slot nuts. Use a threadlocker (Loctite 243 or similar) to fix the bolts into the slot nuts of the deflector.
- Deflector mounted / deflector attached
- Periodically check that all screws are held correctly and tighten them if necessary after.
- Periodically check that the bolts are torqued down properly, if retorque is needed.
