KIDDE 345629 Smoke Alarm Detector
Description
Note: The actual appearance of your product may differ from the illustrations.
- The product is designed to detect fire/sound the alarm in the event of an instance of fire in the living area/household.
- This product is a photo-electric smoke alarm/detector that is operated using a 9V block battery (6F22 or GP 1604S). The battery has a lifetime of at least 1 year. A photo-electric smoke alarm/detector reacts to slow fires which usually generate thick, black smoke and low heat, and smoulder for many hours, before developing naked flames. This smoke alarm/detector does not contain radioactive material or material that might endanger the environment.
- In every room (except the bathroom) and in every other area of the house, there should be at least 1 smoke alarm/detector installed. Attention should be paid to ensure that the people in the house can hear the alarm signal and respond to it. To ensure the absolute minimum safety, 1 smoke alarm/detector should be installed in the hallway between the living and sleeping areas, and 1 smoke alarm/detector in each bedroom. For a typical apartment located on one floor only, it is recommended to install a smoke alarm/detector on the ceiling of each bedroom and the hallway at the beginning of each sleeping area.
- If the hallway leading to the various bedrooms has a length over 9 m, a smoke alarm/detector should be installed at each end of the hallway.
- For a typical multi-storey house, it is recommended to install a smoke alarm/detector on the ceiling of each bedroom and a smoke alarm/detector in the hallway at the beginning of each sleeping area. If the hallway leading to the various bedrooms has a length above 9 m, a smoke alarm/detector should be installed at each end of the hallway. In addition, a further smoke alarm/detector should be installed at the top of the stairs leading from the first to the second floor. If there is a cellar, a smoke alarm/detector should be installed on the ceiling of the cellar, at the foot of the stairs.
- Follow the instructions to ensure proper operation.
- The local regulations are to be taken into account.
Important safety information
- The Test button can be used to check that the smoke alarm/detector is functioning correctly. Do not use any other method of testing. Check the smoke alarm/detector once a week to ensure correct operation.
- Do not remove or disconnect the battery since this would result in the smoke alarm/detector no longer being functional.
- This smoke alarm/detector may only be installed by an authorised, qualified electrician. When installing, all of the national installation and construction regulations must be observed and implemented.
- This smoke alarm/detector has been designed specifically to be used in apartments or houses. In blocks of apartments, each unit must be equipped with a smoke alarm/detector. Do not install the smoke alarm/detector in other building types, specifically buildings not designed to be lived in. The use of this smoke alarm/detector does not replace a full alarm system.
- A smoke alarm/detector is only able to ensure early recognition of a fire in its immediate vicinity. If a fire occurs in a remote part of the house, on another level that is not fitted with smoke alarm/detector units, in a chimney, on a roof or the other side of a closed door, the smoke may not reach the smoke alarm/detector in good time, and the alarm may not be sounded early enough.
- Despite the volume of the alarm signal, there may be situations in which individual persons may not notice the alarm, for example, due to the noise level inside or outside the house, when in deep sleep, after using medication, drugs or alcohol, or in the event of a person being hard of hearing or having another restriction.
- If you suspect that the smoke alarm/detector will not be able to sufficiently warn a member of your household, please use a specialised alarm that meets the increased requirements. The relevant person must be able to respond quickly to the alarm to reduce the risk of damage, injuries or death in the event of a fire. If a member of your household is hard of hearing, please install a specialised smoke alarm/ detector that uses light signals or vibrations to reliably warn the relevant person.
- The smoke alarm/detector can only trigger the alarm if it recognises smoke or combustion particles in the air. The smoke alarm/detector does not respond to heat, flames or gas. The warning function of the smoke alarm/detector is based on the emittance of an acoustic signal. Unfortunately, fires can spread very quickly or explosively. At the same time, a fire may also be laid deliberately or be caused by inattentiveness. In such instances, it is possible that the smoke alarm/ detector may not sound the alarm fast and thus a safe exit cannot be ensured.
- The prerequisite for the correct functionality of the smoke alarm/detector is proper care. This also means that the smoke alarm/detector may not be manipulated nor deliberately or recklessly used for another purpose. A smoke alarm/ detector is not a guarantee for the prevention of bodily injury and property damage and may never be used as a replacement for the insurance of lives and property. Like any other technical product, a smoke alarm/detector may fail. For this reason, you should test each smoke alarm/detector weekly and replace them after 10 years, at the most.
- The area monitored by each smoke alarm/detector may not exceed 60 m².
- If the room height is over 6 m, please use an additional smoke alarm/detector.
- If beams with a height above 20 cm are present, and the individual ceiling sections between the beams have an area above 36 m², additional smoke alarm/detector units must be installed in the sections. If the height of the beams is less than 20 cm, install the smoke alarm/detector in the centre of the ceiling, not on one of the beams.
Warning
- The smoke alarm/detector may not be covered or painted over.
- To prevent accidents, the smoke alarm/detector must be reliably installed on the ceiling of the room under the installation instructions.
Fitting the battery
- Connect the power supply (► Figure 1)
Replacing the battery
- Rotate the smoke alarm/detector anti-clockwise. Then remove the alarm unit.
- Remove the battery. Insert the new battery correctly (► Figure 2).
- Place the new battery into the battery holder. Fit the alarm element. Rotate it clockwise.
- Press the Test button for at least 3 seconds to test the smoke alarm/detector. The sound pattern is 3 signals, a pause of 1,5 seconds and a repeat of the signals. If the smoke alarm/ detector does not sound when tested, there is either a fault or it has been incorrectly installed. In this case, read the section called “Eliminating faults”
- After every battery change, the correct functioning of the smoke alarm/detector is to be checked using the testing equipment.
DANGER! Risk of the explosion caused by the incorrect replacement of the
battery! Only replace the battery with one of the same or equivalent type.
CAUTION! Risk of damage to the device! Smoke alarm/detector and battery
may not be exposed to direct heat. All contact with liquids is to be avoided.
The smoke alarm/detector may not be used in the following areas
- In the vicinity of flammable electrical equipment or areas like, for example, in the kitchen, close to furniture or water heaters.
- If required, you must install a specialised suitable smoke alarm/detector in such areas.
- In areas with increased temperatures-e.g. close to dishwashers or washing machines -the smoke alarm/detector must be installed at a distance of at least 3 metres from these machines.
- In the vicinity of air conditioning units air exhaust/supply systems or ventilation systems, the smoke alarm/detector must be installed at a distance of at least 1 metre. Near this equipment, smoke can spread very quickly. The smoke alarm/detector is not able to respond to smoke reliably under such environmental conditions.
- In rooms with an ambient temperature of less than 4 °C or more than 37 °C.
- In very dusty or dirty areas, as well as areas in which there are very many insects.
Testing the smoke alarm/detector
- Test each smoke alarm/detector regularly to make sure it has been installed correctly and is functioning properly.
- Do not use naked flames to test the smoke alarm/detector (risk of fire!).
- Test each smoke alarm/detector once a week. Test each smoke alarm/detector immediately upon returning from a few days/weeks away from the home.
- During the test, maintain an arm’s length distance from the smoke alarm/detector.
- Test the smoke alarm/detector by executing the following steps:
- Press the Test button for at least 3 seconds. The alarm sounds in the form of 3 short bursts. After a pause of 1,5 seconds, the alarm signal sounds again. This procedure will be repeated until you release the button. The alarm signal may continue for a few seconds after the Test button has been released.
Alarm
DANGER! Risk of fire! If the alarm sounds when you are not pressing the Test button, then the device has detected smoke. The alarm signal requires your immediate attention and response!
- The alarm sounds in the form of 3 short bursts. After a pause of 1,5 seconds, the alarm signal sounds again.
Alarm silence (silence mode)
If the unit is alarming, push the test button, it will pause the unit for
approximately 10 minutes. The red LED will flash once every 8 seconds, it
indicates the smoke alarm is running into the silence mode. Smoke alarms are
designed to minimize nuisance alarms. Combustion particles from cooking may
set off the alarm if the alarm is located close to the cooking area. Large
quantities of combustible particles are generated from spills or when
grilling/frying. Using the fan on a range hood that vents to the outside (non-
recirculating type) will also help remove these combustible particles from the
kitchen. The alarm silence (test button) is extremely useful in a kitchen area
or other areas prone to nuisance alarms. The silence feature is to be used
only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking activates the
alarm. The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 10
minutes, if after this period, particles of combustion are still present, the
alarm will sound again. The alarm silencer (silence mode) can be repeatedly
until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm.
CAUTION! Before using the alarm silence (silence), identify the source of
the smoke and be certain a safe condition exists.
Note: Weekly testing is required.
DANGER! If the alarm sounds, and it is not being tested, it means the
unit is sensing smoke, The sound of the alarm requires your immediate
attention and action.
Maintenance and cleaning
- In addition to the weekly checks, the battery must be replaced every year. Use high-quality batteries. The required steps can be found in the section called ► Replacing the battery.
- The smoke alarm/detector must be cleaned at least once a month. Remove the battery before cleaning. Use a soft brush to clean the smoke alarm/detector. Make sure that the ventilation slots are free of dust. If necessary, clean the lid of the smoke alarm/detector using a damp cloth.
- Make sure that the battery compartment is closed correctly and that no water can enter the device.
- Replace the battery after cleaning, and then use the Test button to carry out a function test.
Important notes
- Do not open the housing to clean the interior. This may cause damage or shorten the lifetime of the smoke alarm/ detector.
- Replace the smoke alarm/detector every 10 years.
Repair
- Caution Never repair a defective smoke alarm/detector yourself. If the smoke alarm/detector ceases to function within the guarantee period, return the product in its original packaging, to the dealer you purchased it from. If the smoke alarm/detector stops working after the guarantee period has expired, have it repaired by a specialist, or replace the device.
Practising fire protection responses
When the alarm sounds without the Test button being pressed, this represents a
warning indicating a dangerous situation. You must respond immediately. You
should develop flight plans for your family to be prepared for such an event.
Discuss the plans with all members of the household and implement regular
practice.
- Inform all residents regarding the functionality of the smoke alarm/detector. Use the Test button to trigger the alarm signal and explain what the alarm means.
- Determine two exits from each room and a flight path from each of these exits to the outdoors.
- Teach all residents to use an alternative exit if the door can no longer be used. Make sure that everyone knows that hot or burning doors may not be opened.
- Teach all members of the household to crawl on the floor to remain below the level of dangerous smoke, vapours and gases.
- Determine a safe meeting point outside the building for all residents.
How to respond in the event of fire
- Do not panic, keep your head!
- Exit the burning building as quickly as possible. Check the temperature of each door before you open it. If the door feels hot, exit the room using another exit. Proceed calmly and do not attempt to take anything with you.
- Meet at the agreed location.
- Immediately call the fire services as soon as you have left the fire location.
- Never return to a burning building. Wait until the fire has been extinguished.
Note: The information given here will help you to exit a fire. To reduce the overall risk of fire, you should carry out regular fire training.
Eliminating a fault
During testing, or in the event of a false alarm, you may not remove any
components of the smoke alarm/detector to halt the alarm. Immediately open the
window or switch on a fan to extract any harmless smoke.
Troubleshooting
Determine suitable installation points
- Install a smoke alarm/detector in the bedroom and the flight path. If there are multiple bedrooms, install a smoke alarm/detector in each bedroom.
- Install additional smoke alarm/detector units in the stairwell or on every storey.
- Install the smoke alarm/detector in the centre of the room ceiling so that it can be heard easily throughout the room
- Mount the smoke alarm/detector more than 50 cm away from obstacles of all types (wall, dividing wall, beams or similar)
- If the smoke alarm/detector cannot be installed on the ceiling in the middle of the room, the installation point should be at least 50 cm from one corner (► Figure 3).
- If the length of the room or hallway is more than 9 m, install multiple smoke alarm/detector units.
- In the event of L-shaped hallways, install a smoke alarm/ detector at the mitre line or a smoke alarm/detector in each leg of the hallway.
- In the event of domed, pointed or arched ceilings, install the smoke alarm/detector between 50 cm and 100 cm under the highest point (► Figure 4, top). On angled ceilings with a height difference of more than 1 m along a length of 6 m, install the smoke alarm/detector on the lower section of the room (► Figure 4, below).
- If the length and width of a gallery exceed 2 m and the gallery has an overall area of 16 m², an additional smoke alarm/ detector is required under the gallery (► Figure 5: Rooms with pedestals or galleries; 1 = permitted, 2 = not permitted).
- For rooms with a partially angled ceiling: if the horizontal ceiling section is less than 1 m in width, install the smoke alarm/ detector as shown in ► Figure 6. If the horizontal ceiling is wider than 1 m, install the smoke alarm/detector centrally on the horizontal ceiling section.
- The maximum permitted ceiling height for the installation and operation of the smoke alarm/detector is 6 metres. The product is not approved for installation heights greater than this.
Installation
Note: Use only the provided installation materials!
- Rotate the smoke alarm/detector anti-clockwise. Remove the installation plate.
- Hold the installation plate where you wish to mount the smoke alarm/detector. Mark the holes with a pencil. These positions are necessary to drill the appropriate holes.
- Drill 2 holes at the marked positions. The diameter of the drilled holes must be 5 mm. Insert a plastic dowel into each of the 2 drilled holes.
- Position the installation plate and secure the plate into the dowels using the two screws (► Figure 7).
- Insert the battery into the compartment.
- Place the smoke alarm/detector on the installation plate.
