The SYLVANIA Smart Home App will help you update your Bluetooth Mesh device to the right firmware for your smart speaker (Amazon Echo, Google Home Nest, or Apple HomeKit devices). Like WiFi, Bluetooth is a communication technology, but they are not interchangeable. Bluetooth devices use the SYLVANIA Smart Home app; WiFi devices use the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app. You can find links to download  both apps from the App Store and Google Play Store on the Table of Contents of this guide.

If you do not own a smart speaker, the app will give you full control over your Bluetooth Mesh device. Guides for setting up and using your device with smart speakers are available from their manufacturers.
Note: If you opt not to use a smart speaker and pair your device to the app only, you will not be able to control it with your smart speaker by voice control. We recommend pairing the device to a smart speaker for the best experience.

  1. Open the SYLVANIA Smart Home app. Tap the voice assistant you want to use with your device.

How do I reset my device?

Turn it off and on five times consecutively.

Do these devices work with European/220v outlets?

No, these products are engineered for US & Canada outlets only (120V).

Why isn’t setup automatic?

We are working on devices that set up automatically but this technology is not available yet.

Why is the setup different for each manufacturer?

Each manufacturer’s system talks to our WiFi devices differently, and controls them in different ways.

Can my light make multiple colors?

It depends on your light:

  • Amber lights only produce Amber (2000K).
  • Soft White lights only produce Soft White (2700K).
  • Tunable White lights can produce a spectrum of whites, from warm (2700K) to very cool (6500K).
  • Full Color (RGBTW) lights can produce about 16 million colors, including warm and cool white.

Can I automate my device?

Yes! You can create routines and scenes in the Alexa, Google Home, and SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app. Scenes tell a group of devices to change. For example, you might create a scene for going to bed which turns off the living room lights, turns on the bathroom lights, and sets the light on your bedside table to 50% brightness. This is not automatic; you must run the scene.
Routines tell one or more devices to do something at a particular time, like turning on a lamp 15 minutes before sunset. On an iPhone or iPad, you can also run a scene by saying, “Hey Siri….” For example, “Hey Google, turn on Bedtime” or “Hey Siri, turn on Bedtime.” Both will run the scene.

How do I put my light into pairing mode?

Turn it off and on five times. It will flash red, green, and blue (for full- color lights) or white (for white lights).

Can I dim my light?

Yes! You can dim lights, flex strips, and corner lamps with voice control or the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi, Hey Google, or Alexa apps.
Note: SYLVANIA Smart WiFi devices are not compatible with a wall dimmer.

Do these devices work with IFTTT?

SYLVANIA SMART+ devices do not currently work with IFTTT.

Will these devices work with a Philips Hue bridge?

No, Philips is a different brand and uses different technology.

Can I put a device on an outlet controlled by a light switch?

Yes. We suggest you leave it switched on. (If you turn the switch off, the light will be unavailable by app or voice control until you flip it back on.) This will not harm the device.

Does the device remember settings after it’s turned off?

Yes. The device will remember all settings until it is reset.

What is the CRI (Color Rendering Index) of these lights?

SYLVANIA SMART+ lights have a CRI of 90

Can I use these lights in a ceiling fan?

Yes.

Can I cut my flex strip?

Yes, only cut where indicated by the scissors icon.

Is my flex strip extendable?

Yes. Please check packaging for maximum length.

I extended my flex strip but it’s not lighting up.

Please make sure the connections are aligned and match. “R” aligns with “R,” “G” aligns with “G,” etc.

Do these devices work with Apple Home?

No, these devices are not compatible with Apple Home. They can be controlled using Siri Shortcuts.

Can I connect my device directly to Alexa/Hey Google?

Unfortunately, no. The SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app tells your device which system to use and connects it to your account. You can control your device with Alexa, Google, and/or Siri Shortcuts simultaneously, however. For example, you can tell Siri to turn on your light, and Google to turn it off.

Do these devices work with iPhones and iPads?

Yes. Control your device(s) with the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home app on your iPhone or iPad.

What are the minimum software/OS requirements?

The SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app works with iPhone 6 or higher, and Android models released in the last five years.

How do I change colors by voice control?

For a light called “Couch” you can say: “Alexa, turn Couch red.” “Hey Google, turn Couch red.”
Note: To control your light with Siri, you first need to create a shortcut in the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app.

Is my device weather-proof? Can it be used outside?

SYLVANIA SMART+ WiFi devices are not rated for outdoor use. We offer SYLVANIA SMART+ Bluetooth Mesh outdoor flex strips, which are rated for outdoor use. Please check packaging for location rating.

Which apps can I use to update my device’s firmware?

You must use the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app to update your device’s firmware.

Can I loop the colors, or fade from one to another?

Yes! You can find several modes in the Effects tab in the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app.

Can I put my light in a totally enclosed lighting fixture?

SYLVANIA SMART+ WiFi lights are not for use in totally enclosed fixtures.

Do these devices require a hub?

These devices do not require a hub.

Do I always need WiFi turned on to control these devices?

Your light must be connected to your phone or a voice assistant to function. If your light is connected to a voice assistant, you can turn off your phone’s WiFi.
WiFi is required on your phone for setup.

Is there a limit to how many devices I can connect?

The maximum number of devices you can connect is limited by your home layout (walls, floor, etc.), the type and proximity of your WiFi router, and other factors.

Do these devices work on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi?

SYLVANIA WiFi devices can only work on 2.4 GHz.

I already own a hub; will my new devices work with it?

No. SYLVANIA SMART WiFi devices do not require and are not compatible with existing hubs. They connect directly to your WiFi router.

Why do my devices go offline after connecting to WiFi?

If your device is connected to a wall switch or has an on/off switch, make sure it is turned on

Can I use these devices via Bluetooth?

No. Although SYLVANIA Smart WiFi devices have both WiFi and Bluetooth radios, the Bluetooth radio is only there to assist with the pairing process. Check our SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh products.

Can I sync these devices to my TV and movies?

No. SYLVANIA Smart WiFi color devices can only adjust with music while using the SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app.

What is Bluetooth mesh?

Bluetooth Mesh creates an ad-hoc network of Bluetooth devices. It’s ideal for households or businesses which need  tens, hundreds, or even thousands of devices. With a traditional network, each new device talks directly with your phone or tablet. With a mesh network, each new device talks with every nearby device. This redundancy makes it easy to control the network over long distances and in buildings with thick walls.

Is there a limit to how many Bluetooth Mesh devices I can connect?

A Bluetooth Mesh network can support more than 30,000 devices! This is one major advantage of a Bluetooth Mesh network over WiFi devices, whose maximum is limited by the WiFi network. Reliability will vary depending on the distance and obstacles between devices.

What is the range of Bluetooth?

The range of the Bluetooth connection is approximately 30 feet (10 meters) with no obstacles.

How do I set up my SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh devices?

  1. Download the SYLVANIA Smart Home app (click or tap link above).
  2. Power on your device and make sure it flashes red, green, and blue (for full-color lights) or white (for white lights). If it does not, reset it by turning it off and on five times.
  3. Select the smart home speaker that you own (Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home). If you do not own a smart speaker, select “No Smart Speaker” in the app.
  4. Follow the instructions in the app to complete the setup process.

Is my light compatible with SmartThings or ZigBee?

No. SYLVANIA SMART Bluetooth Mesh devices are not ZigBee compatible

I’ve added my device to the Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home apps, but it doesn’t show up. What can I do?

  1. For lights, turn the light off and on five times to reset it to factory settings. For plugs, press and hold the on/off button for 5 seconds until you see the flashing blue LED to indicate that it reset.
  2. Open the SYLVANIA Smart Home app to update the light’s firmware for your smart speaker.
  3. Follow the instructions in the app to complete the setup process.
    Please note : Not all SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh devices are compatible with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Please check your device to confirm compatibility.

My device is showing as ‘Unresponsive’ in the Alexa app. What can I do?

First, refresh the page in the app that shows the device. If this doesn’t work, turn it off and on, wait a few seconds and refresh the page. If you continue to see “unresponsive” in the Alexa app, we recommend you unplug Echo device and plug it back in, then restart the app.

My device is not responding to vocal commands. What can I do?

Turn the device off and on, and wait a few seconds. Try the same vocal command.

My device is still not responding to vocal commands or the Alexa app. What can I do?

  1. Unplug the Alexa speaker and power it back on.
  2. Ask, “Alexa are you up to date?”
  3. Power on your light off and on five times and make sure it flashes red, green, and blue (for full-color lights) or white (for white lights).
  4. Follow the pairing procedure using the Alexa app, or say “Alexa, discover devices.”

Which devices work with Apple Home?

Check your device. If a QR code is printed on it then it is compatible with Apple Home.

Can I use these devices if I do not have an Alexa, Google, or Apple smart speaker?

Yes. Without a smart speaker, these devices are controllable with the SYLVANIA Smart Home app. However, you will not have voice control functionality.

Can I control my device while I’m away from home?

Yes, with a smart speaker. The smart speaker stays connected to your device and the internet.

Will these devices work with first-generation Echo Dot?

No, our lights require a second-generation Echo Dot (or newer).

How can I control my device?

You can control it with a smart speaker app (Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home) or the SYLVANIA Smart Home app.
You will need the SYLVANIA Smart Home app to switch to a different platform, such as changing from an Amazon Echo device to a Google Nest speaker.

Can I use the SYLVANIA Smart Home app and my smart speaker interchangeably?

Controlling your device with the smart speaker of your choice will give you the most flexibility, with voice control. Use the SYLVANIA Smart Home app to set up your device with your smart speaker and update firmware or switch from one platform to another.

Can I sync the SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh lights/flex with music?

No. SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh lights do not have this functionality.

Will my device work with my 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi network?

No. SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh devices do not use WiFi.

Can I use my Bluetooth device without a smart speaker?

Yes. You can control SYLVANIA Bluetooth Mesh devices with the SYLVANIA Smart Home app. You must be within 30’ of the device and your phone or tablet.

Can I control my SYLVANIA WiFi devices and Bluetooth Mesh devices together using the same SYLVANIA app?

No. The SYLVANIA Smart WiFi app controls WiFi devices. The SYLVANIA Smart Home app controls Bluetooth Mesh devices. A smart speaker can control both types interchangeably.
