How to best switch from the previous Natural Nipple to the new Natural Response Nipple?
We’ve created our new nipple to work more like a breast so your baby can drink, swallow and breathe using their natural rhythm, like they do when breastfeeding. Milk only flows when your baby actively drinks, which means they’re always in control of the flow and can feed and pause comfortably.
Which Natural Response Nipple flow resembles my previous Natural Nipple flow?

If your baby is already used to the previous Natural Nipple, or even another traditional bottle, they may need a higher nipple flow in the Natural Response Nipple because they are used to milk flowing quickly with less effort. The table below shows a recommendation on where to start, based on the previous Natural Nipple range. Watch for your baby’s cues to check if you need to change the nipple, and let your baby be the guide.
How long will it take for my baby to adjust to the Natural Response Nipple?
It can take a few tries to get used to drinking with the Natural Response Nipple. When introducing a new bottle, try offering it to your baby when they’re relaxed and not yet hungry. If you’ve tried a few times with no success, it could be a sign that your baby needs another nipple flow. If your baby is coming from a traditional bottle (including our previous Natural Bottle range) they are likely to need higher nipple flows with the Natural Response Nipple because they are used to more milk coming out of the nipple with little effort on their part.
Why did you change to the new Natural Response Nipple?
We’re always looking for new ways to make bottle feeding more of a natural experience for you and your baby. From research, we know that milk releases from the breast when baby applies suction and compression. This allows them to pause whenever they need and use their natural drinking pattern. So, we made a nipple that works that way too, letting babies use their natural drinking rhythm when bottle feeding. Now all our Natural Bottles come with the Natural Response Nipple to make it easy to combine breast and bottle feeding. Can I use the Natural Response Nipples with the previous Natural Bottles? Yes, you can. Our new nipple works with all our Natural Bottles.
Can I still buy the previous Natural Nipples?
We are in the process of changing all our Natural Nipples to the new Natural Response Nipple, so we are no longer making the previous versions of the nipple. In some stores or online, you may still find some of the previous Natural Nipples as they work through any inventory they may have.
Which Philips Avent Natural Response Nipple suits my baby best?
Our new Natural Response Nipple lets your baby use their natural drinking rhythm, like they do when breastfeeding. While age is a guidance, we recommend watching your little one’s cues to find the best nipple flow. We designed the nipple range to work for all different of drinking patterns, from fast and enthusiastic to slow and steady. The Natural Response Nipple is available in nipple flows 1 to 5.The flow rate of milk they get from the nipple is linked to how enthusiastically or steadily they drink as they develop. Enthusiastic drinkers use a strong suction and compression while drinking, resulting in greater milk flow, so they usually need a lower nipple flow from the Natural Response range (such as nipple number 1 or 2) to avoid overflow. Slow and steady drinkers are likely to prefer a higher nipple flow (such as nipple 4 or 5), to ensure enough milk flows, regardless of age. You can start with the nipple that comes with the bottle and adjust from there. If after a few feeding attempts you have no success, consider changing to a different nipple flow. You might need a higher flow if you see your baby struggling to get milk out, or playing with the nipple. You might need a lower nipple flow if you notice milk leaking from your baby’s mouth, or fast gulps. Keep in mind that it can take a few attempts for your baby to adjust from a traditional nipple to the Natural Response Nipple and realize they can use the same pattern they use with breastfeeding when bottle feeding too. If you used the previous Natural nipple, your baby may need higher nipple flows with the Natural Response Nipple because they are used to more milk flowing quickly with less effort.
I’m pregnant or have a newborn. How should I choose the right Natural Response Nipple flow?

We recommend starting with the nipple that comes on the bottle, and buying a couple of extra nipples with higher flows as well. It makes it easier to adjust if you need to. You might feel hesitant about giving your newborn baby a higher nipple flow, but keep in mind our new nipple responds to how enthusiastically or steadily your baby approaches drinking. Enthusiastic drinkers use a strong suction and compression while drinking, resulting in greater milk flow than a steady drinker, who uses moderate suction and compression. So, a newborn who drinks steadily might be more comfortable starting out with a higher nipple flow. Let your baby be your guide. The Natural Response Nipple is available in nipple flows 1 to 5.
Can I bottle feed and still breastfeed?
Yes! Our Natural Response Nipple is designed specifically for babies who combination feed. The Philips Avent Natural Response Nipple is designed to work like a breast for an easy combination of breast and bottle feeding, so your baby experiences less confusion. The nipple only releases milk when your little one actively drinks, in the same way that the breast does. So, when baby pauses to swallow or breathe, the milk flow pauses too. This helps to prevent drips or spills. The design of the nipple is inspired by the physiology of moms and babies, it looks and feels more like a breast. Its natural, broad and soft design encourages your baby to latch on with a wide- open mouth and to suckle in a way that’s similar to breast feeding. This helps make the switch from breast to bottle more natural. Ensuring that your little one always drinks actively helps prevent nipple confusion, so they can switch between breast and bottle more easily. This all contributes to a happy feeding.
How do I know when to change nipple flows?
Watch for your baby’s cues to check if you need to change the nipple. You might need a higher nipple flow if you see your baby struggling to get milk out, or playing with the nipple. On the other hand, if you notice milk leaking from your baby’s mouth, or fast gulps, it could be a sign they need a lower nipple flow. The Natural Response Nipple is available in nipple flows 1 to 5. As long as your baby is calm and comfortable while feeding, there’s no need to change the flow rate. You don’t need to step up the flow based on age, as baby cues are the best way to tell when your baby is ready for a higher flow rate.
How should I prepare my Philips Avent Natural Bottle and Nipple for first use?
Thoroughly clean all parts before the first and each subsequent use to ensure good hygiene. After each feeding, disassemble all parts and wash them in warm, soapy water, ensuring that any food residues are removed before rinsing thoroughly. If you use a brush to clean the tip of the feeding nipple, clean it as carefully as possible to avoid damage. Sterilize the cleaned parts using a Philips Avent sterilizer, or boil them in water for 5 minutes.
Can I use a microwave to warm up my baby's food and drinks?
It is not recommended to use a microwave to warm up baby food or drinks. Microwaves may destroy valuable nutrients in food/drinks and may produce localized high temperatures. If you do decide to use the microwave, take extra care to thoroughly stir heated food/drinks to ensure even heat distribution. Always check the temperature before serving. Only place the container in the microwave, without the screw ring, nipple or cap.
