BEFORE YOU GO-GO
Please read your vehicle owner’s manual for instructions related to child
safety seats, and to locate the ISOFIX anchorage points. This seat can be used
both with the ISOFIX connectors latched, or unlatched and stowed.
- The seat must not be used with a two-point belt.
- The child seat may not be used on car seats facing to the side of the direction of travel.
- Use of the child seat is permitted on rear-facing seats e.g. in a van or minibus, provided that the seat is permitted for transport-ing an adult. Please note that the vehicle headrest must not be removed when fitting on a rear-facing seat! Even if not in use, the child seat must always be secured with the safety belt.
- The safest place to install this product is in the rear seats of your vehicle.
- If you need to install this child seat in the front passenger seat, and your car is equipped with airbags, push the passenger seat as far back as possible. However, make sure the shoulder belt guide of this seat is always in a forward position compared to the B Pillar of the vehicle.
INSTALLING IN THE VEHICLE
INSTALLATION WITH ISOFIX
-
If needed, place the two ISOFIX guides ( I ) on both ISOFIX anchor points between the seat and the backrest.
-
Extend the ISOFIX connectors ( F ) by pulling the ISOFIX release puller D ( E ) in the front of the seat. The ISOFIX connectors will slide to their outermost position.
-
Position the child seat on the seat in the car and insert both connectors into the ISOFIX anchor points until you hear a “click”.
-
Check that the ISOFIX safety indicators ( H ) have turned green.
-
Pull the release pulleDr ( E ) again and…
FOR INSTALLATION WITHOUT ISOFIX, START HERE! -
push the bottom part of the child seat against the vehicle seat until it is firmly positioned and tight to the seat. If the headrest of the vehicle seat is interfering with the child seat, adjust the headrest or remove it completely (do not remove the headrest in rear facing vehicle seats). The entire back surface of the Charlie seat must be in contact with the backrest of the vehicle’s seat.
-
Pull the three-point belt out and feed the upper part of the belt through the shoulder belt guide ( C ) over the green belt path indicator. Ensure the belt guide is closed again and that the belt is not twisted. SIDE IMPACT BUDDY
Charlie offers high-level integrated side impact protection. The Side Impact Buddy improves the protection even further. -
Insert the Side Impact Buddy ( O ) into the red oval socket ( P ) on the side of the seat.
-
Rotate the Side Impact Buddy 90 degrees until it snaps in. The Side Impact Buddy always has to be placed on the window side of the child seat and it may not fit or be compatible with every vehicle.
SECURING YOUR CHILD -
Pull the headrest strap adjuster ( B ) and adjust the headrest position whilst your child is sitting in the child seat.
-
Move the headrest ( A ) then slide it upward or downward. Adjust the headrest until the eye indicator matches the eye level of your child or you cannot put about two fingers (approximately 2 cm) between the shoulder of your child and the lower edge of the headrest.
-
Pull out the three-point belt, position it in front of the child and lock the belt tongue into the buckle of the vehicle.
-
Grab the diagonal belt and pull towards the retractor to remove slack from the lap belt.
- For best protection make sure the belt sits tight and is not twisted. Make sure the lap belt is placed as low as possible on your child’s pelvis and not sitting on the abdomen of your child.
- The diagonal part of the belt should sit on your child’s collarbone in the centre of the shoulder area and not touch the neck. Adjust the headrest for a better position if necessary.
- Always check the correct installation and restraining of your child before you start driving.
- Do not leave your child unattended in the child seat, not even for a short time.
- Cover the product when exposed to direct sunlight. Parts of the seat may get too hot for your child’s skin. Check the temperature before placing your child into the seat.
- Do not use this child seat outside of a vehicle.
- Show your child how the belt has to be placed and how to tighten the belt by themselves.
- “…The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit.” Sensei
- REMOVING FROM THE VEHICLE
-
Push the locking mechanism of the shoulder belt guide inwards and slide the three-point belt out of the belt guide.
-
Open the ISOFIX connectors ( F ) by pulling on the ISOFIX release puller ( G ) right on the side of the connectors.
- In case the ISOFIX release strap is not accessible use the front puller ( E ) to move the seat forward.
-
Push the ISOFIX connectors back into the seat while pulling on the strap on the front ( E ) and then remove the seat from the vehicle.
WASHING AND CARE
REMOVING THE FABRIC COVER FOR WASHING
Remove the fabric from the headrest by simply lifting it up from the edges.
Open the fabrics on the back of the child seat. To prevent the cover from
slipping forwards whilst in use, there are two small hooks beneath the cover
behind the seating position, holding it in place.
Ensure the cover is detached from these hooks by pinching the cover at each
side of the seating area and pulling towards the centre of the seat prior to
removing the fabric completely. Loosen the whole cover by lifting it up from
the edges.
REPOSITIONING OF THE FABRIC COVER
Find the fabric installation tool behind the head-rest. Tuck the fabric edge
into the right position. Unless already removed for washing, you’ll find
the fabric installation tool behind the headrest. Ensure the fabric cover is reinstalled as it was before removal. You can follow the previous steps in reverse order to make sure everything is in place.
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
Please wash before first use!
- Machine washable: Fine/delicate programme. Hand wash recommended.
- Use mild detergents. Do not dry clean, bleach or tumble dry. Keep away from your dog, your cat and direct heat. Do not use bleach, abrasive, upholstery or aggressive cleaning agents.

Wrinkles?
Remove any wrinkles from the fabric cover with a steamer. If you don’t have
one available, try the steam function of your iron instead.
While steaming, be sure not to touch any plastic parts of the seat with the
iron. Please be careful with hot steam! Keep it far from your body, your cat,
your dog, mother-in-law, house plants… etc. You get the point 🙂
- The fabric cover is a safety feature and the child seat should never be used without it.
- If the cover needs replacing at any time, only use official Swandoo Charlie fabrics.

VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY
- Charlie is suitable for fixing into the seat positions of the vehicles listed below, providing approved ISOFIX points are fitted and available. This child restraint system may be compatible with other vehicles however, we have not yet tested Charlie with all vehicles.
- This vehicle compatibility list refers to ISOFIX posi-tions only. In principle, use of the seat in positions without ISOFIX is always possible with stowed ISOFIX connectors.
- If in doubt, consult either Swandoo or the retailer. For the latest car list please visit our website.
- In some vehicles, head space in the rear seats is limited. If you fasten Charlie using the ISOFIX arms in these vehicles, it may not be possible to use the child seat up to a standing height of 1.50 m. This may be the case, for example, if the headrest hits the vehicle’s C-pillar. Please observe the heights shown in the vehicle compatibility list.
- When a vehicle is marked with *, the space for the head might be limited to 1.35 m standing height for specific models of this vehicle. Recent model updates may not listed as model updates are only mentioned when seating positions
are changed.
