Quick Start Guide
-
Mute your studio monitors.
-
Connect your LiN2A to your mixing bus or patch bay then using balanced TRS cables.
-
Set all controls fullly counter-clockwise.
-
Set the Power switch to ON, and apply power.
Power LED meter will light up. -
Unmute your monitors, and verify that signal is passing to and from the unit.
-
Set the Gain and Peak Reduction controls to about 12 o’clock, and set the Meter mode to Gain Reduction. Increase the Input until the meter is deflecting a few dB.
-
Once again verify signal is passing through the unit. If so, the unit is functioning correctly.
Basic Use
Use the Peak Reduction control to set the desired amount of compression.
Higher Peak Reduction settings will result in a quieter signal; use the Gain
control to compensate for this loss. Try to match the original level as
closely as possible for A/B comparisons that aren’t colored by differences in
overall volume.
Compression Modes
- Compress: A gentler compression setting of roughly 3:1. Note that in the ‘2A compression style, compression is variable depending on the dynamic range of the program material. Higher Peak Reduction values result in slightly higher compression ratios.
- Limit: A hard limiter with a ∞:1 ratio.
What about Attack/Release?
Part of the allure of ‘2A-style compression is its ease of use, thanks in no
small part to its hardwired attack and release settings.
Expect it to sound great with no fuss.
Attack time is incredibly fast at around 10 milliseconds.
About 1/40th the time it takes to blink. Release time is dependent opon the
amount of compression applied by the Peak Reduction control, and can range
anywhere from half a second to five seconds for total release.
Meter Calibration
Making sure that the meter returns to zero is important to the Lin2A’s
functionalities This is controlled the the master calibration set screw on the
back of the unit.
To calibrate, set the Metering Mode to Gain
Reduction and ensure that no audio is passing through the unit. Then, using a
flathead screwdriver, rotate the screw on the rear panel until the needle
rests on 0.
Voila! Meter calibrated.
The T4BLA Optical
The LiN2A features a custom-designed Black Lion
Audio T4BLA Optical. It yields sublime transparency and smooth gain reduction
due to highly selective trimming of its photocell.
- Power Button: turns the Lin 2A on/off.
- Mode: Sets Lin2A to Limit or Compress mode.
- Gain: Sets the post-compression make-up gain to compensate for level lost during compression
- VU Meter: Displays units selected by Meter Mode.
- Peak Reduction: Sets the desired amount of compression/ limiting.
- Meter Mode: Sets the type of information rendered on the meter. Gain Reduction meters the amount of gain reduction applied. Output +10 and Output +4 will render the Output level as respectively described.
- AC Power Input: ONLY use the supplied IEC Cable to power this unit.
- Voltage setting: Select the voltage suitable to your region. Do not power the Lin-2A by inappropriate voltage.
- Grounding plug: The unit should only be used in a properly-grounded studio. Do not defeat the third-pin ground for use in an ungrounded studio.
- Meter Calibration: Use this control to adjust the 0 resting point when no compression is being applied.
- TRS Output: Balanced line-level output.
- TRS Input: Balanced line-level input.
Note: For proper performance, balanced
TRS must be used for all inputs and outputs.
