Channel Features
Mixer Controls
In addition to level controls for each channel, the EXM Mobile Tower features
a compact mixer control section which allows users to independently control
the input type, voicing, and reverb for each channel.
These additional controls are accessed by the channel select buttons.
Simply tap the channel select button for the desired channel and all settings
for this channel will be displayed and can be configured.
Input Types
All three mixer channels are equipped with combi-jack inputs and can be used
for microphones, balanced/unbalanced line or instrument sources. Additionally,
channel 3 features an 1/8-inch stereo input jack (this input sums the signal
to mono and mixes it into channel 3). Using the input type control on the
mixer adjusts the input gain and dynamics processing to best suit the
connected input type. A level control sets the gain and relative volume while
the Clip LED indicates input clipping. For powering condenser microphones, a
48V of phantom power is present on the XLR portion of the combi-jacks.
Voicing Selection
Each mixer channel contains 3 preset voicings which can be used to alter the
EQ and dynamics of the signal. The Music voicing presents a small mid-scoop
EQ, which is often desirable when listening to playback music. The Flat
voicing does not alter the signal in any way and should be used if no
additional channel processing is desired. The Voice voicing adds a 90Hz high-
pass to the signal as well as a small amount of compression. This setting is
recommended to be used when the connected channel is intended to be used for
vocals.
Reverb Control
A hall reverb is available on all 3 mixer channels. Use the reverb control to
mix in some additional ambiance to your signal. This often works well with
vocals as well as instruments.
Bluetooth™
The Yorkville EXM Mobile Tower is capable of Bluetooth™ audio streaming from
devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. Pairing your device with an
EXM Mobile Tower is simple and gives you the freedom to play your music
wirelessly.
The EXM Mobile Tower also supports wireless stereo pairing between two EXM
Mobile Tower units.
One unit will act as the “Primary” unit, playing the left channel of the audio
and maintaining the connection to your device, while the other unit will act
as a “Secondary” unit, playing the right channel. You only need to connect
your device to the Primary EXM Mobile Tower unit to enjoy high quality
wireless stereo playback. See the “Stereo Mode” section of this manual for
more information.
Bluetooth™ Operation
When the EXM Mobile Tower is powered on, Bluetooth™ will be disabled by
default. To enable it and connect to your device, simply tap the Bluetooth™
button. If a device was previously connected to the EXM Mobile Tower, it will
attempt to automatically reconnect. Similarly, if a wireless stereo connection
was previously established, both EXM Mobile Tower units used will attempt to
automatically re-establish the wireless stereo connection (in the same Primary
or Secondary role they previously performed).
Pairing
To pair your device to an EXM Mobile Tower, simply press the Bluetooth™ button
down and hold for 4 seconds, then release the button.
Status
The blue status indicator alerts let you know the current status of the
Bluetooth™ connection as described in this chart:
Mode| Linked| Link-Back| Standby| Pairing| Stereo
Grouping| Grouped
---|---|---|---|---|---|---
Standalone| ON| ON. blinks lx every 2 seconds.| Flashes lx every 2 seconds|
Flashes 2x per second| N/A|
Stereo Primary| N/A| ON. blinks lx every 2 seconds.| Flashes 2x every 2
seconds| Flashes 3x per second| Double flash| ON
Stereo Secondary| N/A| N/A| N/A| N/A| Double flash| Slow flash
Level Control
Streamed music volume can be changed via the connected Bluetooth™ device, or
via the Channel 3 Level control on the EXM Mobile Tower.
Stereo Mode
The EXM Mobile Tower supports wireless stereo playback between two EXM Mobile
Tower cabinets, for an enhanced listening experience. One cabinet will act as
the Primary unit, while the other acts as a Secondary unit. The Primary unit
will play the left audio channel of streamed music, and also maintain the
Bluetooth™ connection with your device, while the Secondary unit will play the
right audio channel. Your device only connects to the Primary unit, not the
Secondary.
To enable Stereo Mode, simply double tap the Bluetooth™ button on the EXM
Mobile Tower that should act as the Primary unit (left channel), then double
tap the Bluetooth™ button on the other EXM Mobile Tower (right channel). The
order matters, as the first unit double tapped will become the Primary unit
(left channel). Both EXM Mobile Tower units will automatically attempt to re-
establish the Stereo Mode connection the next time they are powered on and
enabled, with the same Primary and Secondary roles previously used.
You can still pair new devices to an EXM Mobile Tower Primary unit if it is in
Stereo Mode. Pairing a device to an EXM Mobile Tower that is in Secondary mode
will end the stereo wireless connection.
Button Operation
Single Tap – Enables Bluetooth™
Double Tap – Enter Stereo Mode
Press and Hold (4 seconds) – Enter Pairing Mode
Press and Hold (8 seconds) – Disables Bluetooth™
Range
The EXM’s Bluetooth™ operating range is rated for 10 meters (33 feet) line of
sight. The quality of the link can be affected by an excess of traffic in the
2.4 GHz bandwidth or structures between the Bluetooth™ unit and the streaming
device.
Note: When connected with Bluetooth™, ALL audio is streamed from your device.
If you don’t want your streaming music to be interrupted, turn off
‘notifications’ on your device
Master Section
Master Control
The Master Control is used to set the overall level of the Yorkville EXM
Mobile Tower.
Note: When two systems are linked together, the Master Control only
affects the level of the unit on which it is located.
Sub Control
The Sub Control is used to set the relative level of the subwoofer to the
satellite speakers. Typically, this control should be set to around noon. If
you are using microphones and acoustic guitars and do not need much bass, turn
the Sub level down to help prevent low frequency feedback.
Modes
The EXM Mobile Tower contains 2 system modes, which alter the unit’s EQ and
dynamics to best suit its intended use and application. For music playback,
Club mode should be selected. For live performance, live mode should be
selected.
Main Input / Main Output Section
In situations where additional bass or input channels are needed, the Link jacks can be used to connect multiple EXM systems and/or a subwoofer.
Main Input and Main Output Jacks
The Main Input and Main Output jacks are in parallel, we have provided both
male and female XLR connectors to help make it more convenient to ‘link’ EXM
enclosures together. To use the Link feature, insert a standard XLR patch
cable between cabinets.
USB Power Output
A USB power port is included on the EXM Mobile Tower, this port provides a fixed output of 5V with up to 500mA of current, and is intended for power delivery only. Typically, this port would be used to charge another small battery-powered device such as a cell phone.
Battery Status Indicators
The EXM Mobile Tower has a series of four green LEDs to indicate the
approximate charge level. The upper green LED is illuminated if there is
greater than 75% charge in the battery. The red LED only will indicate that
the battery is critically low (approximately 10% remaining) and needs
immediate charging.
Note: The indicators will be active only when the power switch is turned on.
Low-Power “Sleep” State
The EXM Mobile Tower features a special “sleep” mode which reduces energy
consumption when the system is not in use which preserves battery life. The
unit will enter sleep mode after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity.
Note: This mode is disabled whenever AC is connected to the unit. To
ensure that the sleep state doesn’t interfere with normal operation, the
output level should be controlled with the Master control, especially where
quiet playback is desired.
Battery Performance Modes
The EXM Mobile Tower contains a battery performance switch which can be used
to help extend the battery life of the unit while running on battery. In Full
Power mode, no performance adjustments are made and the unit will operate to
its maximum potential. In Extended Life mode, the maximum output and dynamics
of the system are adjusted to extend the total battery runtime of the system.
Please note that if AC is connected to the unit, the state of this switch is
bypassed and the unit will only operate in Full Power mode. Battery life with
music with heavy bass content will typically be 10 hours however, when
operating at full output with bass heavy music, it is recommended to set the
switch to Extended Life mode to maintain the typical battery life of 10 hours.
Note that if AC is connected to the unit, the state of this switch is bypassed
and the unit will only operate in Full Power mode.
Battery life with worst case music with heavy bass content at maximum output
will be a minimum of 2.5 hours in full power mode, and a minimum of 5 hours in
extended life mode.
Charging Indicator
Whenever AC is connected to the unit, the colour of the power on button will indicate the charging status. If it is green, the unit is fully charged. If it is red, the unit is in the process of charging.
Charging the EXM Mobile Tower
To charge the EXM Mobile Tower, plug it into an AC power source using the
included power cord. The charging indicator LED is the best indication of the
charging status; even if all of the battery status LEDs are lit, there is
still possibly some additional charging time required. The EXM Mobile Tower
can be used while charging. The EXM Mobile Tower can be safely left connected
to AC power for charging indefinitely. It will intelligently control its own
charging regime when plugged in long-term.
The EXM Mobile Tower will not charge when the temperature is below 0° C or
above 45° C.
If the EXM Mobile Tower is going to be stored unused for a long period of time
(greater than 6 months) it is advisable to periodically plug it in to charge
up the battery.
If the EXM Mobile Tower has been stored for a long period of time unused and
it has not been maintained, it is advisable to connect the charger and leave
it plugged in for approximately 24 hours.
