Joule:
- Joule is intended for counter use only.
- Joule is intended for use with water only.
- Follow proper kitchen sanitation and sous vide packaging practices. Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, eggs, or unpasteurized milk may increase risk of foodborne illness. Use only food-safe packaging.
- Spilled food or liquid can cause serious burns. Never use an outlet below the counter, and never use with an extension cord. Always keep the cord outside the reach of children or pets to avoid hot water-related injuries.
- Please be careful when removing bags or jars from water heated with Joule, as they can be very hot to the touch. We strongly recommend using tongs or jar lifters.
- To ensure continued protection against risk of electric shock, connect to properly grounded outlets only.
- Cooking with Joule can cause containers to become very hot to the touch. Do not touch hot surfaces and use oven mitts when handling cooking containers.
- While it is running, do not remove Joule from water-it could spray hot water and cause injury.
- Always turn Joule off, unplug the unit and wait for it to cool, before removing it from water.
- The clip can become hot during cooking. Allow it to cool before handling. The metal foot can also become hot from sitting in heated water. Allow it to cool before handling.
- After unplugging, the heater will remain hot and should not be placed on combustible surfaces.
- Unplug Joule when not in use and before cleaning. Allow it to cool before removing or replacing parts.
- This appliance can be used by children 8 years and above, persons with reduced physical, mental or sensory capabilities if supervised or instructed and understand the hazards involved.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of damaging countertops:
- Don’t use Joule in pots or vessels placed directly on countertops made of materials such as quartz, granite, or marble, as doing so may damage the countertop. Please consult your countertop manufacturer’s use instructions, and always use Joule with a thick, sturdy trivet or potholder rather than placing the pot directly on the countertop. A dish towel may not effectively protect the countertop from damage.

PAIRING JOULE WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE OR TABLET
-
Activate Bluetooth on your phone.
-
Download the Joule app from the app store, and then log in with your username and password. Don’t have login information yet? No problem—you can create an account within the app.
-
Locate the orange Joule button in the lower right corner. It will guide you through the process of connecting your Joule to your app. The LED status light on top of Joule will blink white when it is ready to connect.
NOTE: Do not try to pair your phone with Joule through your phone’s Bluetooth menu. Pair through the Joule app. -
Once you have linked Joule to your app, there are two ways you can set it to cook your food. You can control it using the step-by-step guides in the app, or manually set times and temperatures. The guides include the Visual Doneness feature, which shows you how your food will come out at an array of temperatures. Manual mode is best for cooks who already know their preferred temperature. Follow the tutorial in the app, which will show you how to access both guides and manual mode, then select your preferred method of cooking.
BASIC SOUS VIDE COOKING GUIDELINES
-
Pick your pot. We recommend starting with a standard stock pot—the pot you use to cook pasta. However, Joule will work with almost any kitchen pot or pan. In fact, you can even use Joule in your kitchen sink or in a cooler—anywhere you have access to a standard power outlet.
-
Fill pot with warm water from your tap.
-
Protect your work surface. Remember, the water in your pot will get hot enough to cook your food—treat your work surface accordingly.
-
Joule is equipped with an industrial-grade base magnet, so you can quickly and securely affix it to most magnetic steel pots or induction-ready cookware. However, it also has an easy-to-use, universal
clip (included with initial Joule purchase). You can use this clip
to attach Joule to the rim of your vessel rather than relying on the magnetic foot to hold it in place. Another option for larger vessels is Big Clamp, which works with just about any other type of container you want to use Joule with, such as your trusty Cambro. -
Put Joule in the pot and affix it to the vessel. The water level should cover at least the bottom one and a half inches of Joule but reach no higher than one inch below the top of the pot. Never submerge Joule’s cord in water. Here are some guidelines:
Minimum water depth: 1.5 in (38 mm) Maximum water depth: 8 in (203 mm) -
In a well-insulated, covered container—a cooler, say—Joule can heat up to 10 gallons (40 liters) of water. In a covered pot, it can heat about 5 gallons (20 liters). When you’re cooking without a cover, we generally recommend limiting water volume to about 2.5 gallons (10 liters). However, you can always use the clip to attach Joule to the rim of your container and increase the maximum water level.
Care & Cleaning
CLEANING JOULE
- Thanks to Joule’s seamless design, in most cases you can simply clean it with a damp cloth or sponge and then wipe dry.
- Never put Joule in the dishwasher, and do not submerge Joule in water.
- To keep Joule running smoothly, we suggest cleaning it periodically in a vinegar bath. Bath time rules: Pour equal parts water and distilled white vinegar into a small pot. Add Joule, use manual mode to set the temperature to 140
- °F / 60 °C, and allow Joule to heat the liquid. When Joule alerts you that it has reached that temperature, the cleaning is complete. If you have hard water, it is especially important to clean with vinegar to remove build up inside Joule, which can result in a whistling sound and/or slow heating times—signs that your sous vide tool may need a bath.
- To clean the inside of Joule, take off the metal foot by twisting it counter clockwise, remove the propeller, and then use a wet sponge or bottle brush to gently wipe out the inside. If food has become cooked onto the heater, use a nylon or brass brush to clean, but go easy on the soft rubber seals at the top of the heating cavity.
CHANGING THE JOULE CLIP To remove Joule’s standard clip and swap in the Big Clamp (sold separately), simply pull downward on the wire clip until it slides off. Next, slide the Big Clamp up into place until it clicks, and get cooking.
STORING JOULE
- When you’re done cooking, we recommend using the app to stop Joule and unplugging the device before storing. We also recommend letting Joule cool down before you handle it, as the lower portion of the device will be quite hot after cooking.
- Please note: Any service needs not covered above should be performed by an authorized service representative.
