Rivet Counter HO Scale P-S Backpacker Well Cars

The Rivet CounterTM brand aims to provide highly detailed and accurate model trains based on their real-world counterparts. The P-S Backpacker Well Car is a 5-unit set with 40′ wells designed to reduce weight by eliminating bulkheads and using Inter-Box Connectors (IBCs) to secure containers in place. The car’s low profile makes it look similar to Gunderson’s offerings but shorter in height. The earliest production had limitations on container loading, but later versions had strengthened wells that could handle pairs of 20′ containers in all units. The sets handle 40′, 45′, or 48′ containers in the top position, with staggered 53′ containers possible. Most TTX Backpackers are currently in service and are useful for handling 20′ and 40′ international container traffic.

The product comes with several parts that are specific to Roadname and Road Number, such as End Well Right Side Grab Iron, Brake Corner Stanchion, Brake Stand Grab Iron, Brakewheel, Brake Stand, B Unit Brake Chain Linkage End, B Well Trainline Pipe Bottom, B-End Platform, Roping Eye Left, End Well Side Trainline Pipe Left Intermediate, B Unit Brake Chain Linkage Intermediate, Intermediate Cross Platform, Intermediate Stanchion – Right, Intermediate Stanchion – Left, Well Floor, Brake Chain Tensioner Wheel, Interbox Connector, Brake Chain Tensioner Rod Support, Medium Intermediate Platform A, Body – B Well, End Well Side Trainline Pipe Left, End Well Branch Pipe, End Well Retainer Valve Pipe, Coupler Box Cover, End Well Side Trainline Pipe Right, End Well Left Side Grab Iron, End Well Trainline Pipe Bottom #1, Screw – Flat Head – Machine – 2.0 X 4 .0MM, Brake Stand Stirrup Step, Side Bearing Support Left, Coupler Type SBE – Diecast, Coupler Centering Spring, Trainline Hose Intermediate, Medium Intermediate Platform B, and IBC Box. The product also includes non-functioning detail parts such as interbox connectors (IBCs) that can be placed in the IBC boxes when running the car empty, if desired.

INTRODUCTIONS

Our Rivet Counter™ brand strives to create the most accurately detailed model trains imaginable. The real-world counterpart is meticulously researched to ensure prototype fidelity. Each model features numerous factory applied parts including railroad, road number, and era-specific™ details whenever possible. In 1986, Pullman-Standard introduced the “Backpacker” well car, a 5-unit set with 40’ wells designed to reduce tare weight by eliminating bulkheads and using Inter-Box Connectors (IBCs) to secure containers in place. The car’s low profile made it look similar to Gunderson’s offerings, but shorter in height. The earliest production had limitations on container loading, but later versions had strengthened wells that could handle pairs of 20’ containers in all units. The sets handle 40’, 45’, or 48’ containers in the top position, with staggered 53’ containers possible. Currently, most TTX Backpackers are in service and are useful for handling 20’ and 40’ international container traffic.

What’s in the bag?

In the clear polybag with the model we have included several model interbox connectors (IBCs). On the prototype, these are used to secure the top and bottom containers together for travel. When not in use they would be stored in the IBC box on each car. On our model, these are non-functioning detail parts that the modeler can place in the IBC boxes when running the car empty, if desired.

Assembly Notes For Optional Parts

Out of the box the backpacker will operate on a 22” radius. To accomplish this we did not install three parts on both the B and C wells. For those that have the ability to run on larger radiuses, 26” and above, these parts can easily be installed, if desired. The three pieces in question are the brake chain tensioner wheel, brake chain tensioner rod and the brake chain tensioner rod support. From the factory the brake chain tensioner wheel is already installed on the brake chain tensioner rod. To install these parts you will need a pair of tweezers and some canopy glue or some white glue and a small screwdriver or piece of wire to apply the glue. We recommend using these glues as they take time to set up and this give time to position the parts. Also possible some small drill bits to clean the mounting holes for the rod. Also we suggest that you test fit the parts before gluing.

To start refer to the exploded drawing above to see the location of these parts relative to the car body. Note that the end of the rod with the wheel goes towards the outside edge of the car. Insert the rod end into the corresponding hole in the car then positing the rod support partially into its mounting hole and then inserts the other end of the rod into the hole in the support while fully inserting the support into its mounting hole. Allow sufficient time for the glue to dry and you are done.
