Manual Coffee Machines (Barista) FAQ
-
Question 1 Do I need to regularly descale my coffee machine?
Answer 1 It is critical that you regularly clean & descale your coffee machine to ensure efficient water & milk frothing dispensing/function.
After continued use, your Espresso Machine may develop a build-up of mineral deposits and therefore require occasional descaling. We recommend descaling your Espresso Machine every 4-6 months, although this period will depend on the hardness of water in your local area and frequency of use. -
Question 2 I misplaced / accidentally broken a part, where can I buy spare portafilter, Water tanks, Milk tanks, drip trays etc…?
Answer 2 Contact our Consumer Service Team by UK Telephone: 0800 028 7154 or by e-mail: BrevilleEurope@newellco.com they will be able to advise on all spares that are available. -
Question 3 Why does the clean light keep illuminating? What shall I do?
Answer 3 If the clean light keeps illuminating, the appliance needs to be descaled. Please go through the cleaning procedure in the manual and follow the guidelines regarding descaling. -
Question 4 What is the correct way to use grind settings?
Answer 4 For freshly roasted beans, we recommend using a medium grind setting. As a guide, start on grind setting 20. As the coffee beans start to lose their freshness, turn the bean hopper clockwise in small increments to a finer grind setting to maintain optimum espresso extraction. ‘The optimal extraction time is between 28-30 seconds. If extraction time is above or below this the grinder needs adjusting. Higher number = coarser grounds = faster extraction. Lower number = finer grounds = slower extraction. See User manual how to adjust extraction time. -
Question 5 Water is leaking from the group head. Can I resolve this?
Answer 5 There are a number of things that make cause the group head to leak. Do not overfill the basket; too much coffee in the filter basket can prevent water from running. It may result in multiple leakages from the portafilter and the group head. If this is not the case, there are some check you can do to the machine. Firstly, make sure the portafilter has been rotated to the full lock position. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, then check if the 58mm seal is not out of position. If it is, remove it gently using a screwdriver, and put it back in place. Finally, wipe the group head thread and the shower head with a damp cloth. If the problem still persists, please get in touch with our Consumer Service Team by UK Telephone: 0800 028 7154 or by e-mail: BrevilleEurope@newellco.com they will be able to advise next steps. -
Question 6 Water gathers in the drip tray during extraction. How do I resolve this?
Answer 6 If there is a puddle of water within the drip tray, it means the nozzles of the unit are clogged with limescale. To unclog them, please pour a mixture of water and white vinegar into the water tank; the ratio is 1:1. Stir 300 ml of water and 300 ml of white vinegar in the water tank and perform the steps from the instruction manual. -
Question 7 The unit switches off itself. How do I fix this?
Answer 7 The unit is design to switch off if not in use for a period of no use, when left powered on (which is against user guidance to leave the appliance switch on & connect to live mains when not in use). If the unit switches off itself without being left in a period of no use, make sure there are not multiple appliances working at the same time. The unit may switch off due to a power overload. -
Question 8 I lost my Coffee Machine Instruction booklet, where can I find a replacement?
Answer 8 All Instruction Booklets are available on the Breville Website or follow this path

Question 9 The grinder is messy, and sometimes it sprays a lot of coffee grinds. What should I do?
Answer 9 Clean the coffee grinds from the grinder spout before grinding. Make sure the coffee beans are fresh. If you choose a dry roast, make sure you have enough beans for your dose. Increase the humidity of the beans by stirring them with a damp wooden spoon handle before putting them into the hopper for grinding. You can always lightly tamper the grindings as they build up to prevent excess ground coffee grinds fall off the portafilter. -
Question 10 How do I clean and care for my machine?
Answer 10
Cleaning the exterior: use a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent if necessary. Cleaning the group handle and filter basket: after you finish making your coffee, wash the group handle and filter basket. It’s recommended washing the group handle and a filter basket once a week with non-acidic detergent. Cleaning the group head: after making your coffee, remove the group handle and press the ONE CUP button to flush the showerhead and remove any coffee grinds.
Cleaning the filter baskets: every 2-3 months, soak the filter basket overnight in the milk jug with a mixture of water and white vinegar. In the morning, rinse the jug and filter basket under running water. Place the empty filter basket into the portafilter and insert it into the group head. Press the ONE CUP button and let water give it a good clean. Cleaning the steam wand: after finishing your beverages with milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. Then purge the steam wand with steam for 5–10 seconds. This will ensure your steam wand is clean and ready for its next use. Every 2-3 months, soak the steam wand overnight in the milk jug with warm water and white vinegar. Then, remove the jug and rinse. Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth; this ensures all leftovers gathered in the nozzles have been removed. Run hot water through the steam wand for approximately 40 seconds.
Unblocking the steam wand: if the steam wand is blocked, use the cleaning pin to dislodge any milk leftovers. The cleaning pin is located in the accessory’s storage area under the drip tray. Insert the cleaning pin into the steam wand tip. Run hot water through the steam wand. If the steam wand remains blocked, unscrew the steam wand tip and soak it overnight in the milk jug with a mixture of water and white vinegar. The next day, rinse the jug and the steam wand tip under running water. Use the cleaning pin to clean the steam wand tip. Screw the steam wand tip back into the steam wand arm. Run hot water through the steam wand for approximately 40 seconds.
When water is boiled, carbon dioxide is released. The release of these gases creates a new chemical reaction. Then, as a result, the substances calcium and magnesium carbonate are formed., This is sometimes referred to as ‘limescale build up’ and can influence appliance performance. Using filtered water prevents the nozzles from blocking. Regular cleaning with water and white vinegar or water and citric acid extends the life of the coffee maker. Refer to Answer 1 for descaling frequency.
