CalfRail 7.2 Calf training and first steps
This document offers a quick overview of the training of calves at the CalfRail and the first steps with the system.
First housing in single hutches
Give colostrum
- For a good start, colostrum feeding is irreplaceable! Feed colostrum to the calf as soon as possible in a good quality and sufficient quantity.
Calf box
- Make sure that the calf box is clean and freshly strewn.
Manual Feeding
- When feeding with a bucket or bottle, the feed must be taken outside the box (head outside the barrier)
Avoid too frequent manual feedings as well as too frequent observations of the individual feedings in order to exclude false conditioning.
Registering the calves at the CalfRail
- Avoid too frequent manual feedings as well as too frequent observations of the individual feedings in order to exclude false conditioning.
- Register calves at the CalfRail directly after housing – even if you only train the calves the next morning. There is a chance that the calves train themselves.
Note: The animal numbers correspond to the box numbers on the CalfRail.
-
999: Animal / box is supplied via CalfRail
-
1 – 4: Feeding station to which the CalfRail is assigned 01 – 99: Position of the box
-
From the parking position [PP], it is counted first in the direction to the right, then to the left.
-
Create a plan with the position and number of each box or note the number given by the programme on the respective box.

Training young calves
Start CalfRail manually
Attracting
- Try not to enter the individual calf box and remain outside the box.
- Encourage calves that do not go to the teat on their own to get up by talking to them etc.
Training
- Operate the training button sensitively. Let the calf drink as much as possible by itself.
- Avoid actively watching every single feeding to prevent misconditioning of the calves.
Animal Control
Regularly check the feeding quantities of the individual calves at least 2 times a day in the barn and at the automatic feeder or in the CalfCloud. One missed feeding is not necessarily a cause for concern.
Note: Further information on animal control can be found in QSG 1.5
Transfer from CalfRail to the group
Note: Further information on animal management can be found in QSG 1.8.
