Crouse Hinds Series MTL ATEX Directive Poster

Product Information:

The ATEX directive, also known as Directive 94/9/EC, is a
European Union directive that governs the safety of equipment used
in potentially explosive atmospheres. Eaton’s MTL product range is
compliant with the ATEX directive. The directive classifies
equipment into different groups and categories based on the type of
explosive atmosphere it is designed for. It also specifies
equipment marking requirements, including the ATEX symbol,
identification number of the Notified Body responsible for
surveillance, CE mark for European compliance, and equipment
protection level.

The ATEX directive is implemented in the UK through Statutory
Instrument SI 1996, No. 192 and amendments. The UK implementation
also includes the Equipment and Protective Systems Regulation (EPS
Regulation) by the Office of Public Service Information.

The product is designed for use in both gas and dust explosive
atmospheres. It belongs to Group II, which covers non-mining
applications, and has a Category 1 equipment classification.

The product complies with all relevant directives, including the
Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC, Electro Magnetic Compatibility
2004/108/EC, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and the ATEX or
parallel Flammable Atmospheres Directive 94/9/EC.

For more detailed information on gas, temperature, area
classification, and types of electrical protection, please refer to
Eaton’s MTL flammable facts poster.

Product Usage Instructions:

  1. Ensure that you are familiar with the ATEX directive and its
    requirements.

  2. Check the equipment marking to ensure compliance with the ATEX
directive. Look for the ATEX symbol, identification number of the
Notified Body responsible for surveillance, CE mark, and equipment
    protection level.

  3. Determine the type of explosive atmosphere (gas or dust) in
which the product will be used.

  4. Verify the equipment group and category. The product belongs to
Group II (non-mining) and has a Category 1 classification.

  5. Refer to Eaton’s MTL flammable facts poster for detailed
information on gas, temperature, area classification, and types of
    electrical protection.

  6. Follow the safety guidelines and requirements of the ATEX
directive for the installation and use of the product.

  7. Ensure compliance with all relevant directives, including the
Low Voltage Directive, Electro Magnetic Compatibility Directive,
Machinery Directive, and the ATEX or parallel Flammable Atmospheres
    Directive.

  8. If using the product in the UK, refer to the implementation
regulations specified in Statutory Instrument SI 1996, No. 192 and
    amendments.

  9. For further information on compliance with the ATEX directive,
refer to the Harmonised European Standards and the ATEX
    guidelines.

`SIMPLE APPARATUS’ & THE ATEX DIRECTIVES

Simple apparatus has been in use as a valuable part of intrinsically safe systems for many years. It was necessary to reassess the use of this apparatus with the introduction of the two ATEX directives. The following has been agreed at EU level; “Simple apparatus is considered not to require certification by a notified body. The responsibility for compliance with the relevant parts of the standard rests with the persons claiming compliance. Certification to the ATEX Directive is not required because of the low levels of energy, which are added to the intrinsically safe circuit by this apparatus. Simple apparatus is required to be clearly identified when it is installed.”

THE NEW APPROACH

Safety Instrumented systems are widely used in industrial process plants where there is threat to life or environment should something go wrong. The IEC 61508 set of standards Functional safety of electrical / electronic / programmable electronic safety-related systems’ are now considered industry good practice’ for both manufacturers and users designing products and systems for safety related applications.
Our application note AN9025 provides an introduction to the subject.
MTL Instruments are members of `The 61508 Association’
