FIELD OF APPLICATION

Application

SK breathing apparatus are to be used as personal rescue pieces of equipment wherever dangerous situations may occur due to fire fumes or lack of oxygen. The apparatus is very light and can be carried along by an operator for long periods, as an entire work shift, so that it is at any time ready for use in case of accident. SK 1203 model with a steel cylinder weighs more than 5 kg and therefore cannot be worn continuously throughout the work shift.

Limits and warnings

Always read these instructions before use. Strictly follow the instructions given here as well as the national regulations in force during use. SK breathing apparatus shall not be used for maintenance or work, even for a short period, nor for rescue operations or underwater work. Although the bag has antistatic characteristics as required by the reference technical standards, the equipment has not been designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Duration

  • The 2 litres 300 bar cylinder allows an autonomy greater than 15 minutes at a constant flow; the designation of the equipment is EN 1146/15.

End of use

  • During use the wearer can check residual autonomy by the pressure indicator. Once air supply finishes, an automatic device allows the user to breathe from the external environment; at this time the wearer shall be away from the hazardous area.

DESCRIPTION AND WORKING PRINCIPLE

SK breathing apparatus consists of a hood connected to a compressed air cylinder through a medium-pressure hose. It is stored ready for use in its transport bag and is activated automatically when the hood is removed from the bag.

SK comprises

Spasciani-SK-1203-Emergency-Escape-Breathing-Device-
fig-4

  • Pressure reducer (1)
  • Air Cylinder (2)
  • Breathing hood (3)
  • Pressure reducer – hood connector hose (4)
  • Storing and carrying bag (5)

Pressure reducer (1)

Made up of a moulded, chromed-plated brass alloy body, it holds the pressure reducing devices that, when opened, permit a constant average air supply (35 l/min) for the duration of the cylinder reserve and maintain a positive pressure inside the hood avoiding the dioxide carbon accumulation.

On the reduction unit there are:

  • Pressure indicator (a)
  • Quick opening device (b)
  • Air hose attachment (c)
  • Safety valve (d)
  • Cylinder refilling valve (e)

Pressure indicator (a)

The pressure indicator (code 932351000) has a dial with notches every 50 bars; between 0 and 10 bar is coloured red, to indicate that the air reserve is running out and you still have about 30 seconds of autonomy; between 10 bar and 290 bar is coloured in yellow and indicates the normal supply of air; between 290 bar and 340 is coloured green, to indicate the full charge of the device. It is designed to withstand a pressure of at least 50 bar above the maximum filling pressure of the cylinder and operates independently of the cylinder closure device.

Quick opening device (b)

  • The quick opening device consists of closing blocks which automatically unlock with the removal of the latch secured to the hose; the disengagement of the blocks activates the air supply.

Supply hose connection (c)

  • This is where the tube connected to the hood is inserted; in the tube section inside the hood, the air pressure is further reduced to breathable values by a bottleneck before entering the hood.

Safety valve (d)

  • The safety valve comes into operation only in the event of a malfunction; it opens with a pressure between 13 and 15 bar and closes with a pressure between 9 and 12 bars.

Charge fitting (e)

The charge fitting has a lid that must be unscrewed in order to connect it to the filling system. Charging is ruled by specific instructions, cod. 960170RIC (cylinder refilling must be carried out only by SPASCIANI S.p.A. or by an Authorized Workshop that has attended specific courses in order to perform this operation; the instruction is therefore attached only when the product is sold with an empty cylinder).

Cylinder (2)

The cylinder that supplies the air to the SK 1203 has a volume of 2 litres and 300 bar working pressure; steel (SK 1203 cod. 4030100000) or composite (SK 1203 C cod. 403010000C) material cylinders are available. Air capacity is about 560 litres and the average duration exceeds 15 minutes. The filling air must meet the requirements of EN 12021 for breathable air.

Breathing hood (3)

The breathing hood is made of PVC-coated fabric, with a large visor made in polycarbonate and sealing collar in elastic polyurethane that fits all sizes and keeps hood in the proper position. Inside the hood, applied to the visor, an inner face mask with inhalation and exhalation valves separates the dead space from that reserved for breathing, preventing the build-up of carbon dioxide. In the mouthpiece connecting the mask to the hood, there is the air inlet system, linked to the pneumatic valve that permits direct breathing of external air when the cylinder air runs out.

Reducer- hood connector hose (4)

The connector hose, very flexible and small in diameter, is equipped with pivoting fittings that permit wide freedom of movement for the wearer. The threaded fittings allow to easily separate the hood from the reduction unit for any maintenance, recharging and overhaul that may be necessary after use and for standard maintenance.

Storing and carrying bag (5)

The bag is made of a robust PVC fabric. The Velcro closure has two side grip- straps for quick opening; four guarantee seals allow to check that the device has not been opened and tampered with. The bag is equipped with robust carrying handles for transport on the shoulder or back. One side of the bag is transparent thus enabling to see the pressure indicator and therefore the content level of air in the apparatus. A padding keeps the device in the correct position inside the bag during the transport and extraction of the hood and protects all sensitive parts from bumps and falls.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Checks before use

To prevent the breathing apparatus from being inefficient at the time of use, a periodic visual check is required both on the state of charge of the cylinder and on the integrity of the product (see point 4). When controlling the pressure gauge, it is necessary to check that the needle lies in the green zone. The green range corresponds to 300−10+40 bar measured at an ambient temperature of 20 ° C. It should be noted that very high or very low temperatures could give incorrect indications, with pressure values external to the green interval but without compromising the good functioning of the product (nominal duration exceeding 15 minutes).

The table below gives an indicative correlation between room temperature and relative pressure in the tank:

-15°C 260 bar
20°C 300 bar
60°C 340 bar

If in situations with particularly severe weather conditions, to check the actual charge of the cylinder it is advisable to place the device in an environment with a temperature of about 20°C, wait at least 1 hour and then check the pressure gauge indicator, which should return to the green zone.

Donning and Operation

_ Warning: _Do not drop SK apparatus to avoid any damage.

For the sequence of actions required to don the device and for more details, look at the pictograms shown on the carrying bag of the device (see Fig.2):

Spasciani-SK-1203-Emergency-Escape-Breathing-Device-
fig-5

  • Put the breathing apparatus on by placing the carrying strap over the shoulder
  • Clasp the grip-strap and pull the flap lid open, thus breaking the guarantee seals
  • Grip the hood and pull it roughly towards you. The blocks will automatically unlock when remove the latch secured to the hose. Once the blocks are removed, the air supply will start.

Warning: This operation starts the air supply, which has a nominal duration of 15 minutes.

  • Immediately put on the hood by widening the collar with your hands and fitting it on your head, placing the mask on your face. Make sure that no clothes or hair are trapped between the neck and the rubber seal to ensure perfect tightness.
  • Breathe normally and immediately leave the hazardous zone.
  • Frequently check the pressure gauge for residual air.

End of use

Do not remove the apparatus until a safe area is reached; once you are in an environment where you can breathe safely, is possible to take the hood off. After use the breathing apparatus must be put back in its storing and carrying bag and sent to SPASCIANI SPA or to an authorized workshop for refilling, checking and sealing.

MAINTENANCE AND CHECKING

Frequency of checks

The efficiency of the breathing apparatus can be checked from the position of the pressure indicator that must always be at 300±15 bar, at a temperature of 20±5°C (at extreme temperatures the gauge could give false readings), indicating that the cylinder is full. Visual checks of this status must be carried out every month on breathing apparatus being used, while those in storage must be visually checked before being put in service. Check that the guarantee seals are not damaged in any way. Check the bag and reducer integrity and, if any defect is detected, please contact Spasciani assistance. Please follow this table for periodical maintenance:

    • In accordance to national regulations
    • These operations must be done only by SPASCIANI SPA or its authorized workshops

Maintenance

The breathing apparatus does not need ordinary maintenance if it is not used. Should the cylinder be found to be even partially empty, the breathing apparatus must be sent to Spasciani or to an authorized workshop to be checked and for maintenance. Every five years the breathing apparatus must undergo special revision, the O-Rings must be replaced, as well as the hood, and the efficiency of the air supply system must be checked as described in Table 1.

STORAGE

The SK breathing apparatus must be stored in a suitable place. This should be cool and ventilated, away from corrosive gas or agents, and away from direct sunlight or sources of heat. The apparatus must preferably be kept at the temperature and humidity specified in the pictograms on the bag and given in Fig. 3 at the end of these instructions. The breathing apparatus must be stored in its sealed bag, which should be kept with the transparent side on view so that cylinder level can be easily checked.

TRANSPORT

The apparatus, kept in their original packing, do not require particular care for transport. However, the current national transport regulations must always be followed. It is advisable, after transport, to check the device suitability for use, paying attention to damage, seal, cylinder charge level. If there are visible defects (eg missing seal, partially discharged tank, broken bag, etc.) send the device to Spasciani S.p.A. or the Authorized Workshop of reference.
