Power-TN00001 PPE-Battery-Cabinet-PRODUCT

Product Information

The PowerPlus Energy Tech Notes provide installation instructions for the PPE battery cabinet according to the ASNZS5139:2019 standard. The installation guidelines ensure that the PPE battery cabinet is installed safely and meets the necessary safety requirements. The PPE battery cabinet must be installed on a non-combustible surface, and the surrounding area must be made of non- combustible materials or fire-rated materials. There should be unobstructed access of 600mm on each side and 900mm above the PPE battery cabinet. The clearance required on the working side of the cabinet depends on the voltage.

Product Usage Instructions:

  1. Ensure that the wall behind the PPE battery cabinet is fire-rated to AS1530.1 or is made of brick, masonry block, concrete, cement sheet, ceramic, or terracotta tile.
  2. Install non-combustible material around the PPE battery cabinet, protruding 600mm past each side and 900mm above the cabinet.
  3. If the PPE battery cabinet is within 900mm of the ceiling or structure, install fire-rated material 600mm past the extremities of the cabinet above it.
  4. Ensure there is 600mm unobstructed access on each side of the PPE battery cabinet and 900mm above it.
  5. Provide 600mm clearance unobstructed access on the working side of the PPE battery cabinet when the voltage is DVC-A + >4Cal/cm3.
  6. Provide 900mm clearance unobstructed access on the working side of the PPE battery cabinet when voltage is greater than DVC-A +>4Cal/cm3.
  7. Ensure there is a 1-meter clearance in front of the PPE battery cabinet in a walkway, corridor, or hallway.
  8. Avoid installing the PPE battery cabinet in restricted areas such as ceiling space, wall cavities, under stairs, under walkways, in evacuation escape routes, and in habitable rooms.
  9. Always read AS5139:2019, the manufacturer’s installation guides/manuals, and other applicable standards before designing or installing any equipment.

Installation

  1. The wall needs to be fire rated to AS1530.1 behind the PPE battery cabinet or to be of brick or masonry block, concrete, cement sheet, ceramic or terracotta tile.Power-TN00001 PPE-Battery-Cabinet-FIG- \(1\)
  2. Non-combustible material must protrude 600mm past each side and 900mm above the PPE battery cabinet.
  3. If the PPE battery cabinet is within 900mm of the ceiling or structure, then fire-rated material 600mm past the extremities of the PPE battery cabinet must also be fitted above.
  4. There must be 600mm unobstructed access on each side of the PPE battery cabinet and 900mm above.
  5. There must be 600mm clearance unobstructed access on the working Side of the PPE battery cabinet when the voltage is DVC-A + >4Cal/cm3.
  6. There must be 900mm clearance unobstructed access on the working Side of the PPE battery cabinet when the voltage is greater than DVC-A +>4Cal/cm3.
  7. There must be 1 metre clearance in front of the PPE battery cabinet in a walkway, corridor or hallway.
  8. Restricted areas: ceiling space, wall cavities, under stairs, under walkways, in evacuation escape routes, and in habitable rooms.
  9. Extra restrictions Section 6 only: not to be installed under floors of habitable rooms, Fire Hazard Level 1 –not to be installed inside or under buildings with habitable rooms.

Installation Battery Rooms

  1. The room must be a clean, dry, ventilated room that minimizes the likelihood of build-up of other materials around the battery system.
  2. The room must minimize or prevent the infestation of insects or vermin.
  3. There must be 600mm unobstructed access on each side of the PPE battery cabinet.
  4. There must be 600mm clearance unobstructed access on the working side of the PPE battery cabinet when the voltage is DVC-A +>4Cal/cm3.
  5. There must be 900mm clearance unobstructed access in front (working Side) of the PPE battery cabinet when voltage is greater than DVC-A +>4Cal/cm3.
  6. There must be a minimum 900mm aisle clearance.

Other Notes

  • Associated battery storage equipment (PCEs, wiring etc) can be installed in the clearance zone.
  • DC isolator is required for each parallel PPE battery cabinet.
  • DC isolator must be within 2m of battery terminals and PCE.
  • DC isolator at PCE if battery terminals and PCE >3m apart.
  • Switch disconnector (DC isolator / HRC with DC switch) compliant to AS60947.3.
  • Batteries > VDC-A to be earthed or have an earth fault alarm.

Always read AS5139:2019, the manufacturer’s installation guides/manuals, and other applicable standards before designing or installing any equipment.
