Grounding Instructions
-
This dust collector must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance
for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This appliance is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and grounding plug. The plug must be inserted into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. -
This dust collector is for use on a nominal 120V circuit and has a grounding attachment plug that looks like the plug illustrated in Fig 1. Make sure that the appliance is connected to an outlet having the same configuration as the plug. No adapter should be used with this dust collector.
-
Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electrical shock. Check with a qualified electrician or service person if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do NOT modify the plug provided with the appliance – if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.
Choosing a Mounting Location
- Do NOT install the Wall Mount HEPA Cyclone Dust Collector outside the work area, especially if the work area contains a gas-fueled appliance. In drawing the air outside, the dust collector could lead to a buildup inside the work area of combustion gases – including deadly carbon monoxide – that normally are vented from gas-fueled appliances.
- The Dust Collector must be secured using all four included 5/16″ x 3″ Washer Head Lag Screws driven into structurally sound wooden wall studs or into 2 x 4 wooden cleats securely attached to wooden wall studs. All cleats spanning wall studs must be long enough that both ends of the cleats can be bolted to studs.
- Do NOT use wall anchors or drywall anchors to mount the Dust Collector.
- To prevent damage to the power cord, select a mounting location for the Dust Collector that will keep the cord out of high-traffic areas.
- After assembly or maintenance, make sure that you have removed all loose tools from the machine before turning it on.
- When attached to the Main Housing of the Wall Mount HEPA Cyclone Dust Collector the mounting brackets’ holes are spaced horizontally 16” on center to correspond to the common spacing for wall studs. If your desired mounting location on an open-stud wall does not line up with studs spaced 16” on center, or if you are mounting to a finished wall, you MUST first bolt two horizontal 2 x 4 wooden cleats to wooden wall studs and then mount the Dust Collector to the cleats. The cleats must be spaced vertically 63⁄4” apart (from the top of one cleat to the top of the other) to accommodate the spacing on the Dust Collector’s mounting brackets. Additionally, the cleats must be long enough that both ends can be bolted to a wooden wall stud.
- To locate and mark wooden wall studs in a finished wall, use a stud finder. As you locate the studs in your desired mounting area, be sure to mark both edges and the centerline of each stud. Fig. 2. Be aware that stud spacing can vary. Take your time identifying and marking the studs to be sure you are certain of their locations. If you have any doubts that you have located the studs properly, seek professional installation assistance.
Prepping the Mounting Location
WARNING
- The Wall Mount HEPA Cyclone Dust Collector must be secured using all four included 5/16″ × 3″ Washers
- Head Lag Screws driven into structurally sound wooden wall studs.
NOTICE
- The top set of Lag Screws must be located 52¾” from the floor to enable a tight connection to the Drum.
Open Studs Spaced 16″ On Center
-
Determine the mounting location. Use a level to mark a horizontal line on both studs at a height of 52¾” from the floor for the top set of the Dust Collector’s mounting holes.
-
Measure down 6¾” and use the level to mark a horizontal line on both studs; this will help you place the pilot hole
locations for the bottom set of the unit’s mounting holes. Fig. 3. -
Use a level or other straightedge to make vertical marks across the horizontal marks at the center of each stud. Measure to double-check that the intersections of these marks are 16″ apart. Fig. 3.
-
Drill 3/16″ diameter pilot holes 2½” deep at the four cross marks. Fig. 3.
-
Using the included 11mm Open Wrench, drive a 5/16″ × 3″
Washer Head Lag Screw at each location, stopping when the heads of the Lag Screws are about 1″ out from the surface. -
Install Vibration Dampeners on the left and right sets of 5/16″ x 3″ Washer Head Lag Screws. Note that the Vibration Dampeners are side-specific; the slot part of the keyhole opening should be at the top. Also, make sure enough of the Lag Screws extend from the studs that the keyhole slots on the unit’s Right and Left Brackets will be able to fit onto them easily. Fig. 4.
Using Cleats
-
Determine the mounting location. If mounting to a finished wall, you should have marked the edges and centerlines of the studs at the desired location in Choosing a Mounting Location. If you have not done so, review the section and Mark all stud locations now; be sure to identify at least one stud beyond the intended footprint of the Dust Collector on each side so that both ends of the cleats will be bolted to a stud.
-
Measure the distance between the outside edges of the two outside studs located in Step 1 and cut two 2 x 4 cleats to that length.
-
Transfer the stud locations (including centerlines) from the wall onto the cleats to determine the location of all pilot holes and counterbores needed to accept 5/16″ x 4″ Lag Screws and Washers (not included). Lag screws must be installed at every stud the cleats cross and at both ends of the cleats. Fig. 5.
-
At the center of each stud location on the cleats, use a 1″ Forstner bit to drill counterbores of sufficient depth to accommodate a Washer and the head of the Lag Screw.
-
Drill a 5/16″ through hole centered in each counterbore.
-
Hold the upper cleat to the wall at the desired mounting location – keeping in mind that the top set of Lag Screws must be located 523 ⁄4″ from the floor to enable a tight
connection to the Drum — and align the pilot holes with the stud centerlines. Check that it’s level; then use the pilot holes in the cleat to mark the drilling locations. Make sure the marks are centered on the studs. Fig. 5. -
Drill 3/16″ diameter holes through the drywall (if applicable) and into the studs at the spots you just marked.
-
Use 5/16″ x 4″ Lag Screws and Washers (not included) to securely mount the cleat to the studs.
-
Repeat Steps 7-8 to install the lower cleat, taking care to maintain the 63 ⁄4″ vertical spacing from the top of the upper cleat to the top of the lower cleat. Fig. 5.
-
On the upper cleat, mark a level horizontal line and then measure and make vertical marks at the locations for the top set of mounting screws. Make sure that the marks are 16″ apart. Fig. 5.
-
Use a level to transfer the vertical marks to the lower cleat and then measure down from the top marks 63 ⁄4″ to make the cross marks locating the bottom set of mounting screws. Fig. 5.
-
Drill 3/16″ diameter pilot holes at these locations.
-
Using the included 11mm Open Wrench, drive a 5/16″ x 3″ Washer Head Lag Screw at each location, stopping to leave the heads of the Screws about 1″ out from the surface.
-
Install Vibration Dampeners on the left and right sets of 5/16″ x 3″ Washer Head Lag Screws. Note that the Vibration Dampeners are side-specific; the slot part of the keyhole opening should be at the top. Also, make sure enough of the Lag Screws extend from the studs that the keyhole slots on the unit’s Right and Left Brackets will be able to fit onto them easily. Fig. 6.
Assembly and Installation
- Using the 12mm end of the 10~12mm Open Wrench, attach the Right Bracket and Left Bracket securely the Main Housing with four 5/16″-18 x 1/2″ Flange Bolts. Fig. 7
- The motor assembly of the Wall Mount HEPA Cyclone Dust Collector is very heavy. To avoid the risk of serious injury, you MUST obtain the help of another adult to lift the unit into position. Use proper lifting techniques.
- With the help of another adult, lift the Main Housing onto the four 5/16″ x 3″ Washer Head Lag Screws, fitting the keyhole openings in the Right Bracket and Left Bracket over the heads of the Screws. Allow the unit to lower slightly so the Screws seat in the keyhole slots. Fully tighten the Screws, using the included 11mm Open Wrench. Fig. 8.
- Turn the Cone upside down and apply one of the pieces of 1mm x 30mm x 38″ Foam Tape in the channel around the narrow opening of the Cone. Trim any excess tape. Fig. 9.
- Fit one of the Hose Clamps onto the Hose. Then work the Hose onto the Cone and secure it with the Hose Clamp. Make sure the Hose Clamp is lined up with the 1mm x 30mm x 38″ Foam Tape. Fig. 9.
- The following step will be easier to complete if you obtain the assistance of another adult.
- Position the Cone beneath the Main Housing so that the top flange of the Cone is flush with the bottom flange of the Main Housing. Use the 10mm end of the 10~12mm Open Wrench to loosen the bolt on the Cone Clamp, and then fit the clamp over both flanges, holding them together. Fig. 10.
- Make sure that the tabs on the sides of the Cone are parallel to the wall to which the dust collector is mounted and then tighten the bolt on the Cone Clamp to secure the Cone to the Main Housing. Fig. 10.
- Apply the 1mm x 30mm x 191 ⁄4″ Inlet Foam Tape around the inlet port near the edge. The tape should completely encircle the port. Use the hole in the inlet as a guide to poke a hole in the tape where the 3/16″ x 3/8″ Phillips Panhead Screw used to secure the Inlet Y-Adapter will go. Fig. 11.
- Fit the Inlet Y-Adapter onto the inlet, over the applied Inlet Foam Tape, and secure it with the #10-24 x 3/8″ Phillips Panhead Screw. Fig. 11.
- Fit the Handle onto the post projecting from the top of the Canister Filter, lining up the hole for the 5/16″-18 x 3/4″ Set Screw with the flat area on the post. Thread the Set Screw into the Handle and thread, the 5/16″-18 Hex Nut loosely onto the Set Screw. Use the included 4mm Hex Wrench to tighten the Set Screw; then use the 12mm end of the 10~12mm Open Wrench to tighten the Hex Nut. (The Handle is used to spin a three-paddle mechanism inside the canister that dislodges built-up dust from the pleated filter.) Fig. 12.
- Apply the 3mm x 20mm x 493 ⁄4″ Foam Tape in the channel around the bottom of the Canister Filter, just above the lip. Trim any excess. Fig. 12.
- The following step will be easier to complete if you obtain the assistance of another adult.
- Lift the Canister Filter up to the Main Housing. Position the Gasket between the flanges of the Canister Filter and Main Housing, taking care to align the holes for the mounting bolts. Securely mount the Canister Filter to the Main Housing with six 5/16″-18 x 3/4″ Flange Bolts and six 5/16″-18 Flange Nuts, using the 12mm end of the 10~12mm Open Wrench to tighten. Fig. 13.
- Fit the Canister Filter Plastic Bag over the bottom of the Canister Filter, making sure that the edge extends at least to the top of the 3mm x 20mm x 493 ⁄4″ Foam Tape. You can use painter’s tape to hold the bag in position if it tends to slip off during installation. Install the Bag Clamp and secure tightly around the bag. Fig. 13.
- Thread the Drum Casters into the mounting sockets on the underside of the Drum and tighten. Fig. 14.
- Securely attach the Drum Handles to the Drum, using two 1/4″-20 x 1/2″ Flathead Screws for each handle. Fig. 14.
- Assemble the inner frame that will fit inside the Drum Plastic Bag in the Drum to keep the Plastic Bag from collapsing when the Dust Collector is activated: Use M3 x 12mm Phillips Head Screws and M3 Hex Nuts to attach the three Long Inner Frame Supports to the two Inner Frame Hoops. Space the Supports 120° apart (every other set of holes in the Hoops) and make sure that the feet of the Supports face inward. Fig. 15.
- Use the remaining M3 x 12mm Phillips Head Screws and M3 Hex Nuts to attach the three Short Inner Frame Supports to the two Inner Frame Hoops at the remaining sets of mounting holes. Fig. 15.
- Place the Drum Plastic Bag in the Drum, with the top of the bag folded over the top of the Drum. Place the assembled inner frame in the bag and carefully press it all the way down. Fig. 15.
- Apply the remaining piece of 1mm x 30mm x 38″ Foam Tape around the flange of the Drum Lid. Trim any excess. Fig. 16.
- Place the Drum Lid on the Drum and roll the Drum directly under the Hose. Fit the remaining Hose Clamp on the bottom of the Hose and work the Hose onto the flange of the Drum Lid. Work the Hose Clamp down so that it’s around the flange of the Drum Lid and tighten it in place. Fig. 16.
- Lift the Quick Lever up to the Cone, fitting the threaded posts of the Quick Lever into the holes in the tops of the brackets on the Drum Lid. Align the plates on the Quick Lever with the plates on the Cone and secure them with four M5 x 8mm Phillips Head Screws at each plate location. Fig. 17.
- The Quick Lever should be in the fully down position, with the hex nuts on the threaded posts tight against the tops of the brackets in the Drum Lid. If that’s not the case, use the 14mm end of the 10~14mm Open Wrench to adjust the hex nuts until the Quick Lever is fully down and the hex nuts are tight against the tops of the brackets in the Drum Lid. This is important so that the Quick Lever can be raised to allow emptying of the Drum. Fig. 17.
- Thread an M10 Locknut onto each threaded post of the Quick Lever and tighten securely. Test the Quick Lever to make sure that the Drum Lid lifts clear of the Drum when it is raised and does not put upward pressure on the main housing when it is lowered. Make any adjustments needed. Fig. 17.
- Connect 4″ dust hose to one or both of the ports on the Inlet Y-Adapter, securing them with hose clamps (not included). A cap is included in case only one port is used. For efficient dust collection when hoses are connected to both ports, blast gates should be used.
