NOTICE
As with any woodworking jig, we recommend becoming familiar with the setup and use of the JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling Guide by practicing on scrap material before attempting to use it on your final workpiece.
The Rockler JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling Guide works for installations anywhere from 1″ to 8 1⁄4″ from the edge of drawer front or door and works with drawer pulls with posts spaced up to 7 1⁄2″ from center to center. When installing a pull, it uses the hardware itself to set the drilling spacing, so you can be sure the holes will match the pull.
Setting the Drilling Guide for Your Hardware
NOTICE
When installing pulls, it will be helpful to know the pulls’ center-to-center distance – the distance from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other. Often, this information can be found on the package or website listing for the product. If it’s not listed anywhere, measure the distance yourself, keeping in mind that it could be in millimeters. This information will make it easier to center the Guide in position later.

  1. Loosen both Drill Guide Bushings (6) until the Drill Guide Carriages (4) and Drill Guide Back Plates (5) can be moved. Move both Carriages and Back Plates until the left directional arrows on the Carriages are at the 2.5″ mark. There’s nothing crucial about this height setting; the Carriages and Back Plate just need to be low enough to provide access to the holes in the back of the Carriages for mounting your hardware. Fig. 1.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 2 NOTICE
The Drill Guide Back Plates (5) have registration notches on each side to help make sure the two Drill Guide Carriages (4) are aligned properly after being adjusted. The Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) have notches at regular intervals, and the registration notches on the Back Plates allow you to count the number of teeth from the notches in the Legs to the notches in the Back Plates to make sure everything is aligned on the same level.

  2. Make sure that both Drill Guide Back Plates (5) are aligned at the same level and remain oriented so the registration notches on the sides are closer to the top than to the bottom. Tighten both Drill Guide Bushings (6) by hand.

  3. Use one of the screws that came with your pull to attach the left side of the pull on the angled flat on the Drill Guide Carriage (4) attached to the Fixed Leg (1). (If you’re installing a knob, there’s really no need to install it on the Pro Drilling Guide; you’ll use the Drill Guide Carriage on the Fixed Leg to set up and align the Guide for drilling. Skip ahead to Positioning the Drilling Guide for Mounting a Knob). Fig. 2.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 3

  4. Loosen the knurled knob at the top of the Adjustable Leg (2), as well as the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and the Adjustable Leg, and slide the Adjustable Leg until the hole on the angled flat of its Drill Guide Carriage (4) aligns with the right mounting hole on the pull. Don’t retighten the knurled knob at this point. Use the second screw that came with the pull to attach the right side of the pull to the Drill Guide Carriage. Make sure that both screws securing the pull to the Pro Drilling Guide are snug but not overtight. Fig. 2.

  5. Loosen both Drill Guide Bushings (6) on both Drill Guide Carriages (4) and move the Carriages up as far as they will go, until the tops of both Drill Guide Back Plates (5) are tight against the bottom of the Fence (3).ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 4

  6. Make sure that both Drill Guide Back Plates (5) are perfectly aligned, and then tighten the knurled knob on the Adjustable Leg (2). This process helps ensure the two legs will be parallel. Fig. 3.

Positioning the Drilling Guide for Mounting a Single Pull
NOTICE

  • If your application requires that the hardware be installed less than 1″ from the reference edge, you will need to attach a shop-made wooden spacer to the bottom face of
the Fence (2) using screws (not included) driven through the pre-machined mounting holes.

  • For reference, the hole in the Drill Guide Bushing (6) on the Fixed Leg (1) is 3/4″ in from the left edge of the Fixed Leg and 1″ in from the left edge of the Fence (3).

  1. Determine where you want to install the hardware on the drawer or door. (This involves figuring out both vertical and horizontal positioning.) Mark the mounting location(s) on the door or drawer front. If you’re installing a single pull on a drawer, one of the simplest ways to do this is to draw a vertical line marking the center of the drawer front and then a horizontal line marking how far down from the top of the drawer front you want the pull to be. (Measure and note this distance, too.)

  2. Loosen both Drill Guide Bushings (6) until the Drill Guide Carriages (4) and Drill Guide Back Plates (5) can be moved. Move both Carriages and Back Plates down until the pointers reach the desired mounting distance from the reference edge, which in this example is the top of the drawer face. Inches are displayed on the left side on each leg, and millimeters are shown on the right side.

  3. Once the Drill Guide Carriages (4) and Drill Guide Back Plates (5) are at the desired level, check to be sure they are perfectly aligned and then retighten both Drill Guide Bushings (6). Then check the setting by positioning the Guide on the drawer front, with the horizontal flat of the Fence (3) resting on the top edge. The holes in the Drill Guide Bushings should be centered on the horizontal line you marked earlier. If they’re not, loosen the Bushings and adjust the position of the Carriages and Back Plates, making sure that they are perfectly level.

  4. To establish the side-to-side position of the Guide, loosen the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) that secure the Indexing Foot (7) in position.

  5. Markings locating the centerlines of the most popular sizes of pulls have been molded into the bottom edge of the Fence (3). Find the center mark for the center-to-center dimension of your particular pull and position the Guide so that center mark aligns with the vertical centerline you drew on the drawer face earlier. Fig. 4.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 5

  6. Clamp or hold the Guide in position and, if the drawer front is short enough, slide the Indexing Foot (7) until it contacts the left edge of the drawer front; then tighten the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) to secure the Indexing Foot. This provides two reference points for the Guide and is especially helpful if you’re installing pulls in the same position on multiple drawer fronts of the same size. On drawer fronts too long to use the Indexing Foot, align the
Drilling Guide by using your layout lines. Fig. 5.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob
and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 6

  7. Remove the included 3/16″ Split-Point Drill Bit (8) from its storage space on the guide and chuck it in your handheld drill.

  8. Make sure that the Guide hasn’t shifted and then use the Drill Guide Bushings (6) to drill the mounting holes for your hardware. The best way to do this is to insert the bit into the Bushing and start the drill. Allow the drill to get to full speed before contacting the drawer front. Don’t force the bit, and drill about 1/2″ at a time, backing out occasionally to clear chips, until you make it all the way through. Fig. 6.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 7

Positioning the Drilling Guide for Mounting Two Pulls

If, instead of centering a single pull, you’re installing a pull at each end of a long drawer front, you can set up the Guide at the left end and then be able to drill at the right end without needing to measure and mark. (This is especially helpful if you’re mounting hardware on a bank of identical drawer fronts.)

  1. First, you need to set the Drilling Guide and Indexing Foot (7) for the hardware you’re using and the desired mounting location, as described in Setting the Drilling Guide for Your Hardware and Positioning the Drilling Guide for Mounting a Single Pull. The difference in this case is that, instead of marking the center of the whole drawer front, you will mark where you want the center of the pull to be.
  2. Once you have set the Drilling Guide and the Indexing Foot (7), use the included Hex Wrench (9) to loosen the set screw on the Indexing Foot’s stop collar. (The Hex Wrench should be in its storage spot on the Fence [3].) Slide the stop collar tight to the Fixed Leg (1) and retighten the set screw to secure the stop collar in place. Fig. 7.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 8
  3. Clamp or hold the Guide firmly in position, with the bottom flat of the Fence (3) against the top of the drawer front and the Indexing Foot (7) tight against the left edge. With the included 3/16″ Split-Point Drill Bit (8) chucked in your handheld drill, use the Drill Guide Bushings (6) to drill the mounting holes for your first pull: Insert the bit into the Bushing and start the drill. Allow the drill to get to full speed before contacting the drawer front. Don’t force the bit, and drill about 1/2″ at a time, backing out occasionally to clear chips, until you make it all the way through. (If you’re working on a bank of identical drawers, drill for all left-side pulls with this setting.)
  4. Loosen the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) and slide the Indexing Foot (7) out to remove it.
  5. Reinstall the Indexing Foot (7) on the other side of the Guide, sliding it in until the stop collar contacts the right side of the Adjustable Leg (2). Tighten the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) to secure it in position. Fig. 8.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 9
  6. To drill the holes for the pull on the right side of the drawer front, simply position the Guide at that end, so that the bottom flat of the Fence (3) is against the top of the drawer front and the Indexing Foot (7) is tight against the right edge. Clamp or hold the Guide firmly in position, and use the Drill Guide Bushings (6) to drill the mounting holes for your second pull. (If you’re working on a bank of identical drawers, drill for all right-side pulls with this setting.) Fig. 9.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 10

Positioning the Drilling Guide for Mounting a Knob

Mark both the vertical and horizontal positioning with intersecting lines.
  2. Loosen the knurled knob at the top of the Adjustable Leg (2), as well as the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and the Adjustable Leg, and slide the Adjustable Leg until it’s tight against the Fixed Leg.
  3. Position the Drilling Guide on the drawer front or door. Loosen the Drill Guide Bushing (6) on the Fixed Leg (1) until the Drill Guide Carriage (4) and Drill Guide Back Plate (5) can be moved. Adjust the Drill Guide Carriage and Drill Guide Back Plate until the pointer reaches the desired mounting distance from the reference edge. Inches are displayed on the left side of the leg, and millimeters are shown on the right side. Adjust the position of the Drill Guide Carriage and Drill Guide Back Plate on the Adjustable Leg (2) to match.
  4. If necessary, shift the Drilling Guide until the hole in the Drill Guide Bushing (6) on the Fixed Leg (1) is centered on the intersection of the lines you drew in Step 1.
  5. Clamp or hold the Guide firmly in position, and with the included 3/16″ Split-Point Drill Bit (8) chucked in your handheld drill, use the Drill Guide Bushing (6) in the Fixed Leg (1) to drill the mounting hole. Fig. 10.ROCKLER 53038 JIG IT Knob and Pull Pro Drilling - FIGURE 11
  6. If you’re installing knobs on multiple drawers or doors in the same position, loosen the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) that secure the Indexing Foot (7) in position.
  7. Clamp or hold the Guide in position, centered on the intersection of your layout lines, and slide the Indexing Foot (7) until it contacts the edge of the drawer front or door; then tighten the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) to secure the Indexing Foot.
  8. If you need to mirror the drilling location (say, to mount a knob on a facing door), use the included Hex Wrench (9) to loosen the set screw on the Indexing Foot’s stop collar. Slide the stop collar tight to the Fixed Leg (1) and retighten the set screw to secure the stop collar in place.
  9. To drill using the mirror setting, loosen the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) and remove the Indexing Foot (7). Reinstall the Indexing Foot on the other side of the Guide, sliding it in until the stop collar contacts the right side of the Adjustable Leg (2). Tighten the thumbscrews at the bottom of the Fixed Leg (1) and Adjustable Leg (2) to secure it in position. Use the Indexing Foot to establish the Guide’s position, and drill the hole, this time using the Drill Guide Bushing (6) in the Adjustable Leg (2).
