Honing

  1. Use the wrench that came with your Rockler’s Carbide Turning Tool (sold separately) to carefully remove the carbide cutter. Make sure not to misplace the retaining screw.

  2. Place the diamond honing plate on a clean, stable surface, with the non-slip foam backing facing down.

  3. Carefully place the carbide cutter into the recess on the appropriate side of the grip, making sure that the cutting edge is facing out. Fig 1. The hole in the cutter will fit onto the nib of the grip, and the magnet will hold the cutter.

  4. Hold the diamond honing plate in place on the surface with one hand; then, holding the magnetic grip with your fingertips, place the flat face of the cutter on the honing plate.
    NOTICE
The recesses on one side of the magnetic grip are sized to fit D1, R1, S1, and Sr1 cutters from Rockler’s Carbide Turning Tools, while the recesses on the other accept D2, R2, S2 and Sr2 cutters. Use the correct side for the cutter being honed. To make it easier to see whether you’re honing the cutter evenly, use a permanent marker to coat the flat face of the cutter. As you hone the cutter, any inconsistencies will be readily visible and you can adjust your hold on the magnetic grip accordingly.

  5. Applying slight, even downward pressure on the magnetic grip and cutter, slowly move the grip back and forth along the diamond honing plate, trying not to rock the grip. Fig. 2. ROCKLER-Carbide-Cutter-Sharpening-FIG2Make a couple of passes and then inspect the cutter to make sure you’re honing it evenly. Continue the process, maintaining even downward pressure and trying not to rock the magnetic grip; only a few passes should be required to hone the cutter.

Storage

The diamond honing plate’s holder incorporates a hole that allows for easy hanging storage on a pegboard or nail. The magnet in the magnetic grip will hold the grip to the plate.

Maintenance

To maximize performance, we recommend periodically using a mild household cleaner and a cloth to remove buildup from the diamond honing plate. Distributed by Rockler Companies, Inc.  4365 Willow Dr. Medina, MN 5534052632 Rev 06/22 1-800-279-4441
