Product Information: Universal-Fit Spark Plug Wire

The Universal-Fit Spark Plug Wire is a wiring system designed for use in automotive engines. It comes with a distributor terminal and boot package for both HEI and socket-style distributor caps. The spark plug wire can be easily cut to the required length using the strip and foldback termination method. The wire set is also available in custom-fit model-specific sets that come ready to install. The set includes a silicone compound to be applied on the inside of the spark plug boots and distributor.

Product Usage Instructions: Universal-Fit Spark Plug Wire

Strip & Foldback Termination Method:

  1. Route the wire on the engine to determine the proper length plus 1/2 and cut.
  2. Strip back 1/2 inch of insulation from the wire end.
  3. Fold the conductor core over the spark plug wire insulation.
  4. Place the metal terminal over the folded conductor and spark plug wire insulation. Ensure the conductor core is folded back and in contact with the terminal.
  5. Slightly bend the crimp terminal inwards. This allows the crimp tool to easily fit over the terminal.
  6. Crimp terminal onto spark plug wire using Taylor tool #43390 for crimping. For professional crimping results, use Taylor tool #43400.
  7. Slide distributor boot over the terminal.
  8. Repeat steps 1-7 for each wire, replacing them one at a time, beginning with the longest wire and ending with the shortest.

Custom-Fit Model-Specific Wire Sets:

  1. Change only one wire at a time starting with the longest. Remove by twisting the boot to break the seal. Grasp the boot and pull with a steady motion. Do not pull on the wire.
  2. Select a new wire that is approximately the same length as the old one.
  3. Use provided silicone compound and carefully apply a thin coat on the inside of the spark plug boot, and distributor.

Precautionary Note:

When using the silicone lubricant compound, avoid contact with the eyes. In case of eye contact, flush your eyes with water for 15 minutes and obtain medical attention. Keep the compound out of reach of children.

NOTE: YOU WILL RECEIVE A DISTRIBUTOR TERMINAL/ BOOT PACKAGE FOR BOTH THE HEI AND SOCKET STYLE DISTRIBUTOR CAPS. SELECT THE CORRECT TERMINAL AND BOOT FOR YOUR APPLICATION.

Note: Replace wires one at a time, beginning with the longest wire and ending with the shortest.

  1. Route the wire on the engine to determine the proper length plus 1/2″ and cut.
  2. Strip away ½ inch of plug wire insulation to expose the wire conductor core. NOTE: Special care must be taken to avoid damaging the outer coating of the resistor core.
  3. Fold the conductor core over the spark plug wire insulation.
  4. Place metal terminal over the folded conductor and spark plug wire insulation. NOTE: Ensure the conductor core is folded back and in contact with the terminal.
  5. Slightly bend the crimp terminal inwards. This allows the crimp tool to easily fit over the terminal.
  6. Crimp terminal onto spark plug wire. Use Taylor tool #43390 for crimping. For professional crimping results, use Taylor tool #43400
  7. Slide distributor boot over terminal.
  8. After completing steps 1-7 to make wires, follow steps 4-7 below to install wires.

CUSTOM-FIT MODEL-SPECIFIC WIRE SETS

  1. Custom-Fit spark plug wire sets are ready to install. Some sets have an additional coil wire to fit various models.
  2. Change only one wire at a time starting with the longest. Remove by twisting the boot to break the seal. Grasp boot and pull with a steady motion. DO NOT pull on the wire.
  3. Select a new wire that is approximately the same length as the old one.
  4. Use provided silicone compound and carefully apply a thin coat on the inside of the spark plug boot, distributor boot, and coil boot. This compound will insure proper sealing, and prevent arcing and boots from sticking to spark plugs. Use a clean cotton swab or a similar tool to apply. Read the precautionary note.
  5. Install new wire on spark plug securely. Listen for, or feel the “snap” of the terminal onto the plug. Distributors, coils and male posts should be installed in the same manner.
  6. For distributors and coils with female sockets, press the brass terminal into the socket and slide nipple onto tower.
  7. Repeat steps 2-6 until all leads are installed. Install wire into separations and loops. Inspect wire routing to insure that wires and boots do not come in contact with exhaust manifolds and other high heat, high abrasion areas.
