Operation
Before first Use
Remove the pole saw and all accessories out of the packing and check all parts
for damage in transit. Keep packaging materials out of reach of children.
There is risk of suffocation!
Assembling the Guide Bar and the Saw Chain
Always wear gloves when handling the saw chain.
-
Place the pole saw on a level surface.
-
First remove the sprocket cover (5) by screwing the inner ring of the chain tensioner (4) counter clockwise.
-
Slide the saw chain (1) around the chain wheel and into the slot of the guide bar (see below picture).
Observe the right chain running direction; note the chain icon (12) on the housing. Make sure to correctly position the chain links, so the links match the chain icon. -
Re-attach the sprocket cover (5) on the motor housing and turn the inner ring of the chain tensioner clockwise to slightly tension the guide bar.
-
Now turn the outer ring, black ring of the chain tensioner in order to tighten the saw chain. The saw chain should be tensioned that way, so the chain is not too loose and it should be possible to lift it off the guide bar a few millimetres.
-
Now turn the inner ring of the chain tensioner (4) in order tofix the saw chain (1) in this position.
Chain Oil
- The pole saw is supplied without oil. Before using the pole saw for the first time, fill suitable chain oil into the oil tank (3). Operating the pole saw without chain oil will damage the machine.
- Open the oil tank cap. Only use a bio-degradable chain saw oil. Observe the oil level indicator on the oil tank. The oil tank has to be filled at least up to half. While filling, make sure dirt cannot get into the oil tank. Dirt can damage the built-in oil pump.
Saw Chain
- Only use sharp chains. Dull chains easily can get jammed.
- While working with new chains, regularly check the chain tension because new chains can lengthen considerably upon initial operation.
- The service life of a saw chain mainly depends on sufficient lubrication and correct tensioning.
- Do not tension a hot chain again. After cooling down, the chain may shorten and therefore becomes over tensioned.
Extension Cord Clamp
While working with the pole saw the power cord might be inadvertently
unplugged. To avoid unplugging, fasten the power cord and the extension cord
together, as shown in the picture, by using the included extension cord clamp.
Operation
- Check the oil level and connect the power plug to power mains.
- To switch on the pole saw, first depress the safety switch (11) and then press the trigger switch (10). Then, release the safety switch.
- To switch off the pole saw, release the trigger switch (10). Please observe that the machine will still run for some seconds. While cutting, make sure the oil level does not run out; refill in time.
Adjusting the Telescopic Tube and the Shoulder Strap
- To enlarge the telescopic tube, unscrew the lock nut (7) a little bit.
- Pull out the telescopic tube according to application and then securely re-tighten the lock nut. The pole saw can be enlarged up to a total length of 2.76 m.
- To ensure well-balanced weight distribution, preferably use the shoulder strap. Fasten the shoulder strap on the karabiner hook and adjust the shoulder strap to the desired working position.
Changing the Saw Chain
- Always pull the power plug before undertaking any maintenance work.
- The saw chain is full of sharp edges. When handling it you should always wear gloves. Slacken the chain until it hangs loose by unscrewing the chain tensioning screw.
- Observe the chapter “Assembling the Guide Bar and the Saw Chain”.
- Clean oil and saw dust from the area under the plastic cover with a brush or if possible use compressed air to blow it out. In particular be sure to clean out the oil duct and the surrounding area.
Hints
- The electric pole saw is a rugged, powerful device. Nevertheless please observe the below mentioned hints.
- Always make sure that there is enough oil in the oil tank and that it does run out. You can purchase chain saw oil based on caster oil from the Westfalia Company.
- The chain should always be well-oiled, if necessary soak the chain in bio-degradable chain saw oil before starting work. While using the saw, make sure that the chain is always well-soaked in oil. If this is not the case, manually oil the chain.
- After each use, remove the sprocket cover and clean the area beneath. Also clean the ventilation holes.
- To keep the pole saw at top performance the chain must be sharp. If you notice that the pole saw’s performance is not as it should be and the chain does not cut the wood by itself, the chain should be sharpened. Either use a Westfalia saw chain sharpener or have the chain sharpened by a professional. When the chain is completely worn out, it should be replaced. Sharpener and saw chains are available from Westfalia.
Kickback
- The electric pole saw is equipped with a low-kickback chain. And from an engineering point of view everything was done to keep kickback low as possible. Nevertheless, kickback cannot be avoided when cutting with the upper tip of the blade.
- Be prepared for some kickback when using this area of the blade or hitting another branch with this area. Always hold the unit firmly in both hands.
Cutting Branches
- Thin branches can be cut off with one single cut. To prevent the branch from slivering and buckling, the branch should be cut off in several pieces.
- When cutting off lager branches, you should first cut into the branch form below. First cut into the branch from below outside the place where you intend to cut off the branch. The cut should go from one third to halfway through the branch.
- This prevents the branch from buckling when you cut into the branch from the top outside the first cut.
- Last, cut off the stump with one clean cut. You might want to seal the cut with a suitable compound.
Repairs and Changing the Carbon Brushes
- Repairs such as changing the carbon brushes should only be undertaken by trained personal.
- Should a malfunction occur do not use the unit any further and do not attempt to repair it yourself. In case of questions or problems turn to our customer service.
Maintenance, Cleaning and Storing
-
If you do not intent to use the electric pole saw for some time,
e. g. over the winter, the bio-degradable chain saw oil must be drained from the oil tank and the oil ducts, because it will gum and might damage the machine. -
Pour remaining oil out of the oil tank and store it in a dark, cool place. Pour a spoonful of mineral oil into the oil tank. Spray penetrating lubricant on the chain and let the saw run for a few moments to spread the mineral oil through the oil pump and the oil ducts.
-
When using the pole saw again, liberally apply chainsaw oil.
-
Hang the pole saw upright, with the saw end on top.
-
Before cleaning and maintaining the pole saw, unplug the device. Do not pull the cord to unplug from the wall socket but grasp the plug itself to unplug.
-
Always follow the instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing accessories. An improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the risk of kickback.
-
Replace dull saw chains and have the chains sharpened professionally.
-
Do not wipe the housing of the machine with sharp detergents or aggressive chemicals in order not to damage the surfaces.
-
Always switch off the pole saw when transporting or carrying the machine. Slide the guide bar cover (13) over the guide bar.
-
Store the pole saw indoors in a dry and dust-free place. Protect the machine from dust and extreme temperatures.
