SERVICING LATCH TYPE II HOUSING

The instructions immediately below are applicable to housings equipped with the Latch Type II mechanism.
Step Action – Type II Latch

  1. Unpack the service kit and inspect the contents to verify that no damage has been incurred in transit.

  2. Hold the FRONT COVER of the housing and with your free hand rotate the yellow release lever anticlockwise

  3.  Without releasing the lever, remove the FRONT COVER completely away from the HOUSING BASE retaining the EPIRB.

  4. Now firmly grasp the EPIRB and withdraw it from the HOUSING BASE.
WARNING: DO NOT remove the EPIRB from its mounting bracket if it is wet. To do so may allow the beacon to automatically activate. Ensure the EPIRB is thoroughly dry before removal.

  5. Press firmly on the spring plate (Figure 2) and undo the stainless steel hex nut by turning it counter-clockwise. Remove the yellow latching plate from the HRU bolt and retain for re-use when re-assembling (Figure 9), then gradually remove the applied pressure on the spring plate, allowing it to curl forward and away from the HOUSING BASE.

  6. Remove the yellow spacer plate from the HRU spigot and retain for re-use when re-assembling.

  7. Withdraw the HRU by sliding it forward off the bolt.

  8. Loosen the stainless steel hex nut on the bolt (Figure 4) sufficiently to allow the bolt’s head to slide sideways and thereby disengage from the key slot in the HOUSING BASE (Figure 4).

  9. Replace the bolt and nut just removed with the replacement parts provided. Note the head of the bolt must be rotated in a specific orientation to allow it to fully engage sideways into the slot, using a spanner to nip up the nut.

  10. Place the new HRU over the bolt (Figure 5) and seat it within the corresponding circular recess provided in the HOUSING BASE (Figure 6).

  11. Refit the yellow spacer plate which was previously removed and retained onto the HRU spigot (Figure 7).

  12. Press the spring plate fully back into HOUSING BASE and then refit the yellow latching plate over the HRU bolt ensuring that the key on the latching plate is located properly in the slotted hole on the spring plate.
Step Action – Type II Latch

  13. Secure the latching plate and spring plate into position by fitting the second stainless steel hex nut provided onto the HRU bolt (Figure 8). The final position of the spring plate is controlled by adjusting the position of this second hex nut on the HRU bolt. Tighten the nut in a clockwise direction so that a gap of between 2mm to 4mm is present the top edge of the spring plate and the rib on the HOUSING BASE (Figure 9).

  14. Return the EPIRB into the HOUSING BASE.

  15. Before re-fitting the FRONT COVER it is necessary to replace the HRU expiry plate fixed to it. Firstly remove the two retention screws located at each end of the metal label plate.

  16. Gently prise the metal label plate off the HOUSING COVER (as it is also retained used double sided adhesive). By rubbing your finger over the surface any remnants of adhesive should be rolled off.

  17. Remove the backing from the new metal label and place it so that the two screw holes align with the corresponding ones provided on the HOUSING COVER.

  18. Fit and firmly tighten the two label retention screws.

  19. Using a sharp implement mark (x) the Hydrostatic Release Replacement Date label just fitted with month and year of next replacement. This is to be the later of two years from the current date, or from when the unit will be returned into service.

  20. Re-fit the HOUSING COVER to complete the service operation.
