Introduction
Welcome to Mission!
The mission is a brand that purveys lifestyle audio fusing Hi-Fi heritage with
contemporary design. Music leads, and technology follows.
Revisited as a sister model to the eagerly anticipated reintroduction of the Mission 770 – a model which heralded the return to UK manufacturing for the Mission brand; the Mission 700 takes what was referred to as an ‘industry benchmark, in the original 700 models, but utilizes Mission’s 40 years of evolution and development in loudspeaker design. Led by Mission’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, the new Mission 700 bears a striking aesthetic resemblance to the original. However, there are many complex innovations and improvements that bring this revered model bang up to date.
As with the flagship 770, Mission has developed a new polypropylene bass/midrange driver and model-specific motor system. This transducer not only upgrades the loudspeaker’s integral design to take account of modern power handling and dynamic requirements, but it also maintains the extended response and low coloration of the original model with all the hallmarks and distinction of a class-leading loudspeaker. From the rigid, cast chassis to low-density surround, every aspect has been revisited to offer a driver with improved rigidity, precision-controlled cone-termination, and dynamic performances that offer a tight, fast, and energetic output.
The distinctive reflex port has been carefully profiled both internally and externally to achieve very low distortion and extension to below 38Hz in-room. Employing a new lightweight, coated microfibre dome for the high-frequency driver, the Mission 700 replicates the flagship 770 with a specially damped rear chamber that offers super smooth treble performance, largely thanks to the resonance control offered by such a design.
The Mission 700 was a precursor for what would become a Mission standard in an unconventional driver array, something Mission refers to as ‘Inverted Driver Geometry’. Not just a design statement, IDG is a staple of Misson loudspeaker design from the 700 onwards. By positioning the treble unit below the bass/midrange driver, the length of the path is equalized so the sound waves coincide at the listener’s head height. This principle improves ‘time alignment’. Such a design requires more than just inverting the speaker cabinet. Every aspect of the industrial and mechanical design requires a precision calculation to ensure the positioning, spacing, and alignment aids the objective of optimum ‘time alignment’. This is perfected by an artisan- level crossover design.
Part of the Mission design process includes advanced software-based crossover mapping and simulation to accurately equalize the balance of the drivers for seamless integration into the overall loudspeaker performance. Not breaking with tradition or protocol, the efficiency of the software-based development is matched in equal part with 1000s of hours of listening tests. The resulting crossover design brings a musical character with thrilling detail and musicality not just matching but superseding the acclaimed level of performance set by the original Mission 700.
Form factor remains true to the original, wherever possible. This includes hand-applied, rich rose-tinted walnut or black real wood veneers and a luxurious laminated white-front baffle. However, as spoken of in the original design, the Mission 700 makes use of less visible innovations incorporated into the design. The new 700 cabinet uses a sandwich construction of differing woods bonded by a layer of damping adhesive. Internal bracing adds further strength and support while a mixture of foam and long hair fiber provides internal resonance and reflection absorption.
As it was in the beginning with the original, the new Mission 700 packs technology and know-how into a benchmark loudspeaker design that is never short in bass definition, frequency response; lack of coloration; imaging; transient attack; depth and perspective; accuracy and linearity; speed and dynamic range. And as you’d expect from a model with such nostalgia and history, the emotion in musical performance is never short in supply!
Positioning The Loudspeakers
- The Mission 700 loudspeakers incorporate an offset treble unit design and are supplied in matched, mirror-image pairs. Therefore, the cabinets should be positioned with treble units on the inner side.
- If you are sitting within 2 meters of the speakers, the distance between the speakers should be similar to the distance between you and the speakers.
- Otherwise site the speakers between 2 to 2.5 meters apart, clear of room corners. The quality and quantity of bass can be adjusted by moving the speakers closer to, or farther from, the wall behind the speakers.
- If the loudspeakers are placed too far from the walls, the bass may be too light and lack warmth. If the loudspeakers are placed too close to the walls the bass will increase but maybe boomy and indistinct. If the loudspeakers are placed further apart, the inward angle (“toe-in”) may be increased by up to 30%. As personal taste and room acoustics play a large role, experiment with different configurations and play a wide range of program materials before finalizing the position of your speakers.
- The optimum listening position is in an area between the speakers broadly known as the “sweet spot”. The more extreme the angle of toe-in the narrower the sweet spot. Mission loudspeakers are designed to cover a wide sonic perspective so there should be no need for extreme settings. A mild angle inwards will cover a wide range of seating positions.
- The grilles are provided to protect the loudspeaker drive units from accidental damage. For critical listening, you may remove the grilles.
Setting Up a Home Theatre System
- Front and Effects Channels: The front loudspeakers are placed on either side of the television screen, 2 to 3 meters apart. The speakers should be angled slightly so they are aimed toward listeners. We recommend placing the rear effects speakers in a high position, behind the listener’s head. If the rear or side walls are a long way from the listening seat, consider standing and mounting the loudspeakers. If the center loudspeaker is very high or low, angle it towards the listener’s ear level.
- The front faces of the center and surround loudspeakers should also be in line as far as possible.
- Subwoofer: As the ear is unable to detect the direction from which deep bass originates, you have the freedom to position the unit. Varying the distance from the wall alters the bass. Placing the subwoofer across a corner boosts the bass but may impair clarity. The performance of a home theatre system can be enhanced by using two subwoofers.
System Placement
- Dolby Labs, DTS, and THX offer 6.1 and 7.1 formats. Although the precise configuration of these systems will depend on the capabilities of your processor and you should be guided by those instructions, we would make some observations.
- Formats the listening seat should not be too close to the rear wall. Optimizing the time delay so that information from all speakers arrives the listening seat coherently is critical for the benefits of these systems to be fully realized.
- Dolby Labs Recommended Placement for Multichannel Home Theater Systems.
Connecting The Loudspeakers
Standard Connection
- Choose a suitable length of twin-core speaker cable for each channel and prepare the ends. Unscrew each terminal a few turns. Connect the red, positive (+)terminal of the Left loudspeaker to the corresponding red, positive(+) amplifier terminal.
- Connect the black, negative (-) terminals similarly. Tighten the terminal securely. Repeat this procedure for the Right Channel.
Looking After Your Loudspeaker
- These speakers are hand-finished with a varnish coating. As with all real wood furniture finishes; exposure to direct sunlight, heat, cold and varying humidity can affect the natural properties of the speaker cabinet. We advise protecting the speaker from extreme variances in temperature and environmental conditions.
- We advise that you do not place anything on the surface of the cabinets, to protect them from damage. Treated with care, the veneer finish will last a lifetime. They will age naturally and subtly, retaining the properties of the beautiful high gloss wood finish.
- Your Mission loudspeakers use an especially hard-wearing sealed finish. They should not be waxed or treated with spray polishes which will smear and dim their lustrous finish. Polish them with a dry or barely moist cloth to remove dust and finger marks, etc.
- Occasionally, remove the loudspeaker grilles and brush them gently with a soft brush before replacing them carefully.
- Avoid getting any liquid behind the grille. If you accidentally spill liquid on your loudspeakers, take them to your dealer for attention before using them again.
