PRODUCT-SPECIFIC SAFETY WARNINGS

DANGER

To avoid serious injury, keep hands and fingers away from the drilling area. Always maintain awareness of the bit’s entry and exit areas.

WARNING

  • The user must comply with all warnings, instructions and safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer(s) of any tool or accessories used with this product.
  • Don’t force the tool. It will do the job better and more safely at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Always wear safety glasses that comply with OSHA/ANSI safety standards.

CAUTION

  • After installation, periodically check all hardware to make sure it hasn’t come loose during use, and retighten as necessary. Non-permanent blue thread locker also could be used to help prevent loosening.

Preparation

NOTICE
Minimum stock thickness:
11⁄2″

  • Successful use of this jig — resulting in proper installation of the hardware — depends on accurate measuring and marking. The jig will help you drill straight holes that are square to the surface, but the drilling locations must be marked out precisely.
  • There are a lot of variables in determining where to drill for the holes, including the dimensions of your stock and whether the outside edge of the assembled pieces will be flush or offset to create a reveal.
  • As a general example, the instructions that come with the Heavy Duty Cross Dowel and Bolt hardware (36073, sold separately) show how to connect a 11⁄2″ x 31⁄2″ stretcher (the actual dimensions of a nominal 2×4 board) to a 31⁄2″ x 31⁄2″ leg (the actual dimensions of a nominal 4×4 post), with a 1/4″ reveal. As noted in those instructions, if your materials are of different dimensions or your situation calls for a different reveal, you will need to calculate the measurements for your drilling locations.
  • Clearly label all workpieces and carefully mark out all drilling locations before using the jig to drill the holes. This will help ensure that you drill in the proper locations.
  • Make sure to mark the drilling locations with long crossing reference lines.. These marks are essential for setting the fence on the jig to help make repeated drilling operations go more quickly and accurately. Fig. 1

Before You Drill

  • Installing cross dowel and bolt hardware involves drilling 9/16″ holes through the faces of the legs and then into the ends of the stretchers (for the bolts) and 7/8″ diameter holes into the faces of the stretchers (for the cross dowels). The jig must be set up for drilling in each of these operations. This involves setting the fence position and installing the correct guide bushing and bit.
Setting the Fence Position

NOTICE: The fence position must be reset every time the distance from the reference edge to the hole drilling location changes.

  1. Place the workpiece on a work surface, with the drilling guide marks visible. Identify the proper reference edge/corner. Typically, this will be an outside edge/corner.
  2. Loosen the knurled thumbscrews that lock the adjustable fence in position on the jig so that the fence can slide forward and backward.
  3. Position the jig on the workpiece, aligning the centering marks on the jig with the crosshatch lines you made to mark the drilling location. Fig. 2.
  4. Holding the jig in position, slide the adjustable fence until it is tight against the leg. Check to make sure that the jig is still aligned with your reference lines. Then tighten the thumbscrews to lock the fence in place. Fig. 2. Installing the Correct Bushing and Bit

NOTICE:

  • For best drilling results, we recommend using the 7/8″ Diameter Long Shank Carbide Forstner Bit (68779, sold separately) and the 9/16″ Diameter
  • Fisch Chrome Vanadium Brad Point Drill Bit, 53⁄4″ Long (55227, sold separately).
  • The Heavy-Duty Cross Dowel Drilling Jig includes two twist-lock bushings: one designed to fit a 9/16″ diameter drill bit and the other to fit the 3/8″ shank of a long-shank 7/8″ diameter Forstner bit.
  • The 9/16″ bit and guide are used to drill through holes in the legs and mating long holes in the ends of the stretchers for the bolts. The Forstner bit and corresponding guide are used to drill the hole for the 7/8″ diameter cross dowel in the face of the stretchers. When using the bushing for the Forstner bit, you must fit the bushing onto the bit before you chuck the bit in your drill. Fig. 3.
  • Both bushings fit into the jig and snug in place with a clockwise twist. Using the Jig

NOTICE:

  • For fastest and best results, drill all holes requiring a particular jig setup at the same time. Then set up the jig for the next group of holes and drill all of those holes.
  1. Make sure the fence of the jig has been set correctly for the group of holes you are drilling. Double-check that the registration marks on the jig align with the crossing reference lines you made on your workpiece.
  2. Clamp the jig securely in place, and clamp the workpiece to the work surface so that nothing will shift during drilling.
  3. Mount the appropriate bushing for the operation you are performing on the jig and twist it clockwise to snug it securely.
  4. Carefully drill the hole. Always start the drill before you make contact with the workpiece, and drill out about 1/2″ at a time, retracting the bit regularly to clear the chips.
  5. Repeat the process to drill all remaining holes requiring that bit and jig fence setting.
  6. Reset the jig fence and, if necessary, change the bushing and bit to drill the other required holes.
