Introduction

This manual gives guidelines for the installation of the VETUS CANNS500 digital battery monitoring shunt. The CANNS500 measures the DC voltages of up to four  atteries bounded in series (batteries of the same battery bank) bounded in series and includes a shunt for current measurements. Using all sensor data available, the shunt calculates the state of charge of the battery bank and the remaining discharge time. Several types of batteries are supported and can be configured through any Wi-Fi connected device with a general web browser. The CANNS500 comes standard with two temperature sensors (VETUS codes: CANNSTR02 (2 metre), CANNSTR05 (5 metre). The quality of the installation is decisive for the reliability of the system. It is therefore imperative that the steps given in the installation instructions are followed in full and checked afterwards. Unauthorised modifications shall exclude the liability of the manufacturer for any resulting damage .

Installation

WarninG
Never work on the electrical system while it is energized .
When connecting the device, follow the order as shown in this document.
3 .1 Connections overview

3 .2 Battery bank
For safety and best performance use batteries of the same brand, voltage and capacity. For diagrams see chapter 5, pages 49 to 53.
WarninG
Do not mix batteries of different brands, voltages or capacity .
3 .3 Mounting location
The CANNS500 must be installed on a solid surface. See principal dimensions page 54.
WarninG
Do not place the CANNS500 in a wet, damp or high temperature compartment.
WarninG
Do not place the CANNS500 in a compartment containing any possible fuel or flammable substances .
3 .4 Connecting the CANNS500
See chapter 5, pages 49 to 53 for the various connection diagrams.
Keep the following order when connecting the device to the battery bank. Ensure that all switches are turned off, all individual fuses are disconnected (taken out), and the main battery bank minus is disconnected from the battery bank.
Step 1
Connect the B1, B2, B3 and/or B4 to the CANNS500.

Connection Fuse Minimum cable cross section
B1 5 A 1 mm2

B2
B3
B4

B1 should always be connected to the highest available voltage of the battery bank. If four 12 V batteries are installed in series to make a 48 V bank, then B1 is connected to the 48 V connection. B2 to 36 V, and so on.
If two 24V batteries are installed in series to make a 48 V bank, then B1 is 48 V, B2 is 24 V. If there is one battery bank casing (box) of 48 V without individual battery blocks, then B1 is connected to 48 V.
In case of a lithium battery bank, connect the highest voltage to B1 only. Do not use B2, B3, B4.
For batteries connected in parallel, V1=V2. In this case, only connect the plus of the battery bank to B+.
Step 2

  • Connect the B1, B2, B3, B4 to the correct batteries.

Step 3

  • Connect the shunt to the negative cable, in between the battery bank and the system (the load: electric motor(s), consumer(s), battery charger(s), etc).
With the exception of the switch, make sure there is no equipment between the CANNS500 minus and the minus of the battery bank.

Step 4

  • Connect the “BATT” terminal of CANNS500 to the minus terminal of the battery bank.

Step 5

  • Place the individual fuses to connect B1 (plus B2, B3, B4 if applicable).
  • Operate the switch to connect the general minus to the system.

Power supply
The CANNS500 is powered via the Batt- shunt terminal and the B1+ terminal (spade connector, e.g. FASTON).
External temperature sensor inputs (T1-T4) The external temperature sensor is used to accurately calculate changes in battery capacity caused by temperature changes.
Two temperature sensors and cables (1 x 2 m and 1 x 5 m) are supplied as standard.
Supplement the sensor set with separately available sensor cables of the correct length.

  • Connect the sensor plug to the two-pin connector labeled T1, T2 , T3 or T4.
  • Stick or place the other end of the sensor cable on the individual battery. Ensure that the sensor cap is placed away from the electric terminals.
