CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS
USER MANUAL
FA3313 Carbon Monoxide Alarms
The original English version of the manual, from which these translations were
taken, has been independently approved. In case of discrepancy with translated
parts, FireAngel Safety Technology Limited confirms that the English guide is
true and correct.
For the earliest warning, we recommend this CO alarm is fitted in a room where
the temperature is between -10°C (14°F) and 40°C (104°F).
Usage outside the temperatures stated above will reduce product life.
This CO alarm is suitable for use in domestic premises (caravan holiday
homes), caravans, motor caravans and boats. This alarm must be installed by a
competent person, able to install according to the instructions. Please keep
this user manual in a safe place.
Note: This user manual is also available in large text and other formats. Please email: technicalsupport@fireangeltech.com or call 0330 094 5830 for further information
POSITIONING
In which room should the alarm be installed?
Your carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is suitable for the landing, hallway, bedroom,
living room, dining room and kitchen.
Common sources of CO include: oil and gas boilers, portable generators, oil or
solid fuel cookers, gas or paraffin heaters, barbecues, clogged chimneys, wood
or gas fireplaces, any gas or fossil fuel-burning appliance and even adjoining
properties.
Do not install the CO alarm in areas which are excessively dusty, dirty or
greasy. Dust, grease and household chemicals can affect the performance of the
sensor.
Where in the room should I place the alarm?
Alarms located in the same room as a fuel-burning appliance should be:
- at a horizontal distance of between 1m – 3m from the potential source.
- located on the same side of a partition as the potential source.
- located at the high side of the room, if sloped ceilings are present.
If on a wall the alarm should be:
- Close to the ceiling, at a height greater than any door or window and at least 150mm from the ceiling.
- If the alarm is on the ceiling it should be at least 300mm from any wall & any ceiling obstruction e.g. light fittings Additional alarms may be installed to ensure that adequate warning is given for occupants in other rooms, by locating alarms in:
- Remote rooms in which the occupant(s) spend considerable time whilst awake and from which they may not be able to hear an alarm from apparatus in another part of the premises, and;
- every sleeping room.
Alarms located in sleeping rooms and in rooms remote from a fuel-burning
appliance should be located relatively close to the breathing zone of the
occupants.
For further guidance on siting and mounting of the apparatus consult EN 50292.
Installation of the alarm should not be used as a substitute for proper
installation, use and maintenance of fuel burning appliances including
appropriate ventilation and exhaust systems.
Caravans & Boats
Caravans & boats have additional risks due to the presence of other vehicles,
engines, generators or barbecues, however this does not change the basic
guidance on locating the alarm. Caravans & boats should have an alarm in the
same room as any fuel-burning appliance, located in accordance with advice
above. If the caravan has a single living space, one alarm is sufficient.
However, any sleeping accommodation which is in a separate room from the fuel-
burning appliance should also contain an alarm.
The two most important considerations when positioning your alarm are:
- Not to place the alarm directly above a source of heat or steam;
- Positioning the alarm at a distance of 1 – 3 m from the nearest edge of the potential source.

CO ALARM AWARENESS
A loud alarm is a warning that potentially lethal levels of carbon monoxide
are present. NEVER IGNORE THIS ALARM, FURTHER EXPOSURE CAN BE FATAL.
Immediately check residents for symptoms of CO poisoning. Contact the proper
authorities to resolve all CO problems.
ALARM
When dangerous levels of CO are detected a loud audible signal of 4 chirps
repeated (85 dB at 3m) will sound & a red warning flash pattern will display
every second. The higher the concentration of CO detected, the quicker the
alarm will respond.
The alarm will sound:
Between 60 & 90 mins when exposed to 50ppm of CO.
Between 10 & 40 mins when exposed to 100ppm of CO.
Within 3 mins when exposed to 300ppm or more of CO.
VENTILATE
Keep calm; open doors & windows to ventilate the property. Stop using all
fuel-burning appliances and, if possible, turn them off.
EVACUATE
Evacuate the property immediately.
RING FOR HELP
Ring your fuel supplier on their emergency number. Do not use appliances again
until they have been checked by an expert.
Get medical help immediately for anyone suffering the effects of CO poisoning
(headache, nausea), and advise that carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.
Write your fuel supplier’s emergency number here:
DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF CO DETECTED, IT CAN TAKE UP TO 10 MINUTES TO CLEAR
THE SENSOR AND THE ALARM TO STOP. DO NOT RE-ENTER THE PROPERTY UNTIL THE ALARM
HAS STOPPED.
The following symptoms may be related to CO poisoning which all household
members should be aware of:
- Mild Exposure: Slight headache, vomiting, fatigue (often described as ‘flu-like’ symptoms).
- Medium Exposure: Severe throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heart rate.
- Extreme Exposure: Unconsciousness, convulsions, cardiorespiratory failure, death.
ALARM SILENCE
WARNING: If the cause of an alarm is unknown, ventilate and evacuate your
property before using this feature.
Press the Test / button.
The sounder will stop and enter into Silence mode for 5 minutes.
NOTE: The alarm will not silence if more than 150ppm has been detected.
Silence mode can only be activated once (until CO returns to negligible
levels).
Once the Silence mode is enabled, if the CO level rises above 150ppm the
device will exit Silence mode and continue to sound.
After 5 minutes if the CO level still high the device will continue to sound.
VENTILATE & EVACUATE
Your CO alarm monitors levels of CO as parts per million (ppm) in the air
surrounding the detector.
35ppm The maximum allowable concentration for continuous exposure for healthy
adults in any 8 hour period (as recommended by the Occupational Safety &
Health Administration).
200ppm Slight headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea after 2 – 3 hours.
400ppm Frontal headaches within 1 – 2 hours, life threatening after 3 hours.
EARLY WARNING INDICATOR
CO alarms FA3322, FA3328 and FA3820 will sound an early pre-alarm warning when
low levels of CO have been detected.
The Early Warning pattern is 1 short chirp then 1 long chirp & an amber
warning flash pattern every 25 seconds.
To
silence the Early Warning, press the Test / button. The sounder will stop and
enter into Early Warning Silence mode for 12 hours – the amber light will
continue to flash. If a higher CO level is detected after this period the
alarm will sound again.
NOTE: To exit Silence mode, press the Test / button again.
The Early Warning will sound when the CO levels in the table are detected over
a sustained time period:
Time | 4 hours | 35 mins | 20 mins |
---|---|---|---|
CO | 10-20ppm | 20-30ppm | 30+ppm |
VENTILATE & CALL A TECHNICIAN
800ppm Dizziness, nausea & convulsions within 45 minutes. Unconsciousness
within 2 hours.
Death within 2 – 3 hours.
This apparatus is designed to protect individuals from the acute effects of
carbon monoxide exposure. It may not protect people who are at additional risk
from CO exposure due to age, pregnancy or medical condition. If in doubt,
consult your doctor.
ALARM IN ABSENCE
When a CO alarm has occurred in your absence, your device will notify you so
that you can take appropriate action at the earliest opportunity. If the
device is not silenced during an alarm it will continue to sound until the CO
level has reduced to below 50ppm.
After which the device will flash the red warning light twice every 20 seconds
to indicate that dangerous CO levels have been detected in your absence.
The red warning light will continue to flash for 7 days if the Test / button
is not used to cancel it.
VENTILATE & CALL A TECHNICIAN
MAINTENANCE
Test the alarm every month. Press the Test button.
The alarm will sound.
If the alarm does not sound, contact Technical Support.
NOTE: The above method fully tests all elements of the alarm. Additional
but not essential testing may be conducted using the Sense-CO Test mode and CO
gas. For information and instructions on the correct method of gas testing
your alarm visit www.fireangeltech.com/sense-co
-
Do not use any other test method except the process described in this manual.
-
Do not tamper with the alarm as this could cause electric shock or malfunction.
Vacuum your alarm every 3 months.
Do not use cleaners or solvents.
Do not paint the alarm.
Replace the alarm every 10 years. -
The replacement date can be found next to the ‘REPLACE BY’ marking on the alarm.
SYSTEM STATUS INDICATORS
Your CO alarm constantly checks the accuracy of its sensor and circuitry. All
alarms must indicate when there is a fault or if the battery power is low
(identified by the icon on the FA3313, FA3328 & FA3820, or when using the
FA3322).
If any of the settings are found to be incorrect or if the batteries become
low, the device will sound an audible chirp and display an amber flash pattern
for up to 30 days.
IMPORTANT: This does NOT mean that the alarm has detected carbon
monoxide.
If there is a fault, your CO alarm will display the following fault indication
patterns.
| Audible pattern| Amber LED/LCD| Action required
---|---|---|---
Low battery| 1 beep/min| 1 amber flash/min| FA3313: Replace the batteries
FA3328, FA3820 and FA3322:
Replace alarm within 30 days
Fault| 2 rapid beeps/min| 2 rapid amber flashes/min| May not detect CO
– replace immediately
End of life| 3 rapid beeps/min| 3 rapid amber flashes/min| May not detect CO
– replace immediately
If your alarm is within warranty, contact Technical Support.
Your CO alarm must be replaced immediately if there is a fault or the device
indicates End of Life. An alarm with a fault or signalling End of Life may not
detect a CO leak.
SLEEP EASY™ SILENCE FEATURE
If a low battery warning ‘chirp’ occurs at night it may be inconvenient to
replace the batteries or alarm. You can silence the ‘chirp’ by pressing the
Test / buttonThe alarm will silence for 8 hours and the amber LED will
continue to flash.
NOTE: You can silence your device a maximum of 10 times.
-
If your alarm is an FA3313 and is signalling low batteries, replace the batteries as soon as possible. Once the batteries have been replaced, the Sleep Easy feature will be
disabled for 30 days. -
If your alarm is FA3322, FA3328 or FA3820 replace the alarm. When the device is still within warranty, contact our Technical Support team.
Night Time Sensing (FA3322 and FA3328 only)
FA3322 and FA3328 CO alarms automatically detect night hours and will reduce
the brightness of the power LED during the nighttime.
Where a low battery ‘chirp’ has already been silenced during the day, your
device automatically detects nighttime and reactivates the silence period for
another 8 hours.
NOTE: During Sleep Easy mode the unit still detects CO and will alert you
to any new faults.
NOTE: The FA3322 CO alarm will not sound the Extreme Temperature warning
when Sleep Easy mode is engaged.
