Installation tips

Where to install the smoke detector

The smoke detectors must be installed so that they can detect smoke.

  • Install in places where people sleep (especially children’s bedrooms)
  • Install close to exits
  • On the ceiling, in the middle of the room
  • At least 50 cm from walls and other objects
  • Maximum installation height 6 m

Installing a smoke detector in a room with an unusual shape

  • Corridors with a maximum length of 3 m: Max. 15 m between 2 smoke detectors.
  • Gabled rooms
    • If the slope of the ceiling exceeds 20 ° from the horizontal, the smoke detectors must be installed between 0.5 m and 1 m from the ceiling.
    • Partially gabled rooms: if the flat ceiling has a width less than or greater than 1 m, consider the slope of the ceiling to be greater than 20°. If the width of the ceiling exceeds 1 m, think of it as a conventional ceiling.
  • Rooms with divided ceilings:
    • If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is less than or equal to 0.2 m, a smoke detector can be installed either on the beams or on the ceiling.
    • If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is greater than 0.2 m and the area of your ceiling panels is less than or equal to 36 m2, use the ceiling as normal.
    • If the height of the subdivisions (ceiling, beams, etc.) is greater than 0.2 m and the service of the ceiling panels is greater than 36 m2, you must install a smoke detector on each ceiling panel.

Areas to avoid when installing a smoke detector

  • In an environment with air draughts (e.g. near an air-conditioning or fan system).
  • Areas where there are frequent fires, such as kitchens.
  • Areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms, or near appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines.

Battery low

When the battery is low, the smoke detector warns you by emitting a repetitive beep and flashing for around 30 days.

NOTE : This smoke detector has a non-replaceable battery. When you see and hear this warning, replace the device as soon as possible! The low battery warning beep can be deactivated for ten hours by pressing the test button. When the detector is in this mode, it remains operational, but we recommend that you change it promptly.

Fault warning mode

If the smoke detector is not working properly, it moves into “fault warning” mode. Attempt to clean the smoke detector (see maintenance). If you do not see any improvement and it remains in fault mode, replace the smoke detector!

Deactivating “alarm” mode

When the smoke detector has detected smoke and switches to alarm mode, you can deactivate the alarm for between 5 and 15 minutes by pressing the test button. After that, the smoke detector automatically reinitialises itself and returns to normal operating mode. If there are still combustion particles in the air, the smoke detector will revert to alarm mode.

NOTE : Before deactivating the “alarm” function, always identify the cause of the alarm and make sure the situation is safe

Maintenance

  • Test the smoke detector is working properly once a week using the test button. If the smoke detector is working correctly, you will hear a beep. Because the alarm is very loud, make sure you keep your distance from the unit while carrying out the test. If the smoke detector does not emit a beep, it must be replaced immediately!
  • Clean the smoke detector at least once a month to get rid of grime, dust and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush and pass it over the sides and the lid of the smoke detector. Do not remove the upper cap on the smoke detector to clean the insides.
  • Do not attempt to repair the smoke detector. If the smoke detector is damaged in a way that affects how it works, it must be replaced!
  • False alarms are often caused by dust or steam

Warnings

  • To avoid injuries, this device must be securely fixed the ceiling in accordance with the instructions.
  • The batteries must not be exposed to excessive heat, such as sunlight or fire.
  • Do not paint or cover the smoke detector
