Care & Maintenance Guide

This  Guide will help you to prolong your Dec-Tec DIY. The following recommendations will help illustrate how to take care of your Dec-Tec DIY so that you may enjoy it as intended for as long as possible.
General Care & Maintenance

  • Wait 48 hours after installation before full water cleaning. This will allow for the Dec-Tec DIY to cure/set in place.
  • Sweep regularly.
  • To look its best, your Dec-Tec DIY deck should be cleaned with a light scrub using a soft to medium bristle brush or broom at least twice per year.
  • Dec-Tec DIY is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof.
  • Avoid the use of black rubber or latex-backed mats and deck accessories as certain rubber compounds can permanently stain the Dec-Tec DIY.
  • Metal furniture and planters without protection underneath can result in rust stains. If unavoidable, we suggest using some plastic slides under the touch points and or cutting slides from the same material to act as a salvage layer.
  • Decaying organic matter such as leaves, pine needles, and insects contain dyes that can stain and be especially difficult to clean and thus should be cleaned up as soon as possible.
  • Spills should be cleaned up immediately. The longer the spilled material is left on the Dec-Tec DIY, the greater the risk of permanently staining it.
  • Do not extinguish cigarettes on your Dec-Tec DIY membrane.
  • Do not walk on the Dec-Tec DIY surface with cleats, spikes, or pointy heeled shoes.
  • Do not drag heavy and/or sharp objects across the deck.
  • Do not allow the Dec-Tec DIY to come in contact with asphalt, coal tar, heavy oils, roofing cements, or creosote as this will permanently stain the Dec-Tec DIY.
  • Do not let flowerpots drip onto the deck where soil additives can leak out and cause membrane discoloration.

Cleaning

  • Remove all debris and contaminants as soon as possible. Suntan lotions, permanent markers, and various organic matter such as decaying leaves and pine needles contain dyes that could permanently stain Dec-Tec DIY membranes.
  • Aside from trying to immediately clean a spill, and for more complex cleaning, attempt to remove stains when the Dec-Tec DIY is cool to the touch and not in the direct sunlight/peak heat of the day.
  • Cleaning solutions must be dabbed, not rubbed on.
  • The most ideal cleaning solution to try is dish soap, Dawn, Palmolive, mixed with water.
  • Always use cleaners as directed by the manufacturer, and always follow any cleaning with a flush of clean water.
  • Always evaluate the cleaner you choose on an inconspicuous place to ensure there will be no problems with the cleaner you have selected.
  • Do not attempt to clean stains, spilled adhesives, paint, or any blemish using bleach, acetone, turpentine, lacquer thinner, ketone, acid or multipurpose stain or paint removers as you may cause irreversible damage to the Dec-Tec DIY print.
  • Do not use solvent-based or chemical care and maintenance products, refinishing products, or waxes on Dec-Tec DIY membranes.
  • Do not attempt to scrape off stains using sharp or abrasive objects.
  • Do not use floor polishers on the Dec-Tec DIY membrane.

Winter Conditions

  • Avoid metal edged snow shovels as they can puncture the Dec-Tec DIY. Inspect your shovel for any sharp edges prior to use.
  • Use a broom for light snow. If snow is fluffy, it may be easier to brush it away with a simple broom rather than risking scratching your deck with a shovel.
  • Use a plastic shovel if removing larger amounts of snow.
  • Use the right ice melt product for your Dec-Tec DIY. Do not use any product with a colorant added as this may stain your Dec-Tec DIY. It is safe to use de-icing agents such as rock salt, just make sure you rinse it off once the snow is gone.
  • Sometimes sand is recommended as an alternative to chemical ice melts for preventing slippage, but like any abrasive substance, sand can scratch the Dec-Tec DIY and diminish the aesthetic.
  • Do not try to shatter ice buildup on your Dec-Tec DIY. As tempting as it is to eliminate it, this can damage the deck.
