General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING: Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

Work area safety

  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety

  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dustrelated hazards.
  • Do not let familiarity gained from the frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

Power tool use and care

  • Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
  • Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  • Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Safety Warnings For Hammer Drills

Safety instructions for all operations

  • Wear ear protectors when impact drilling. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.
  • Use the auxiliary handle(s), if supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal injury.
  • Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutting accessory contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.

Safety instructions when using long drill bits

  • Never operate at higher speed than the maximum speed rating of the drill bit. At higher speeds, the bit is likely to bend if allowed to rotate freely without contacting the workpiece, resulting in personal injury.
  • Always start drilling at low speed and with the bit tip in contact with the workpiece. At higher speeds, the bit is likely to bend if allowed to rotate freely without contacting the workpiece, resulting in personal injury.
  • Apply pressure only in direct line with the bit and do not apply excessive pressure. Bits can bend causing breakage or loss of control, resulting in personal injury.

Additional Safety Warnings

  • Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
  • Do not drill, fasten or break into existing walls or other blind areas where electrical wiring may exist. If this situation is unavoidable, disconnect all fuses or circuit breakers feeding this worksite.
  • Always wear safety goggles or eye protection when using this tool. Use a dust mask or respirator for applications which generate dust.
  • Use thick cushioned gloves and limit the exposure time by taking frequent rest periods. Vibration caused by hammer-drill action may be harmful to your hands and arms.
  • Secure the material being drilled. Never hold it in your hand or across legs. Unstable support can cause the drill bit to bind causing loss of control and injury.
  • Never leave the trigger locked “ON”. Before plugging the tool in, check that the trigger lock is “OFF”. Accidental start-ups could cause injury.
  • Position the cord clear of rotating bit. Do not wrap the cord around your arm or wrist. If you lose control and have the cord wrapped around your arm or wrist it may entrap you and cause injury.
  • Position yourself to avoid being caught between the tool or side handle and walls or posts. Should the bit become bound or jammed in the work, the reaction torque of the tool could crush your hand or leg.
  • If the bit becomes bound in the workpiece, release the trigger immediately, reverse the direction of rotation and slowly squeeze the trigger to back out the bit. Be ready for a strong reaction torque.
  • The drill body will tend to twist in the opposite direction as the drill bit is rotating.
  • Do not grasp the tool or place your hands too close to the spinning chuck or drill bit. Your hand may be lacerated. Do not use the switch “Lock-On” feature in situations where drill bit binding is likely. (For example: just before the bit is ready to break through the material, anytime when using a “Hole Saw”, auger bits . . . . . . . . etc.) When the bit binds, the drill’s body will twist or kick-back in opposite direction and the release of the trigger “Lock-On” may be difficult.
  • Be aware of the location and setting of the switch “Lock-On” button. If the switch is locked “ON” during the use, be ready for emergency situations to switch it “OFF”, by first pulling the trigger then immediately releasing it without pressing the “Lock-On” button.
  • When installing a drill bit, insert the shank of the bit well within the jaws of the chuck. If the bit is not inserted deep enough, the grip of the jaws over the bit is reduced and the loss of control is increased.
  • Do not use dull or damaged bits and accessories. Dull or damaged bits have a greater tendency to bind in the workpiece.
  • When removing the bit from the tool avoid contact with skin and use proper protective gloves when grasping the bit or accessory. Accessories may be hot after prolonged use.
  • Check to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from the drill before switching the tool “ON”. Keys or wrenches can fly away at high velocity striking you or a bystander.
  • Do not run the drill while carrying it at your side. A spinning drill bit could become entangled with clothing and injury may result. GFCI and personal protection devices like electrician’s rubber gloves and footwear will further enhance your personal safety.
  • Do not use AC only rated tools with a DC power supply. While the tool may appear to work, the electrical components of the AC rated tool are likely to fail and create a hazard to the operator.
  • Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery hands cannot safely control the power tool.
  • Develop a periodic maintenance schedule for your tool. When cleaning a tool be careful not to disassemble any portion of the tool since internal wires may be misplaced or pinched or safety guard return springs may be improperly mounted. Certain cleaning agents such as gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ammonia, etc. may damage plastic parts. Risk of injury to user. The power cord must only be serviced by a Factory Service Center or Authorized HAMMERHEAD Service Station.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Installing Bits

WARNING: Always ensure that the hammer drill is switched off and plug is removed from the power point before making any adjustment. When selecting a drill bit, use the right type for your job. For best performance, always use sharp drill bit. You need two hands to operate a doublesleeve keyless chuck.

  • To open the chuck jaws, firmly grasp rear part of the chuck with one hand, while turning the front part with the other hand in the counterclockwise direction to loosen it. Insert the drill bit deeply into the chuck ,and then center the bit in the chuck jaws.
  • To close the chuck jaws, firmly grasp rear part of the chuck with one hand, while turning the front part with the other hand in the clockwise direction to tighten it.
  • Remove the drill bit in reverse order.

NOTICE: The chucks of reversible drills are always fixed by a screw with a left hand thread. The screw must be loosed before the chuck can be removed if necessary. To loosen the screw, turn it in a clockwise direction.

Forward/reverse adjustment

For forward (clockwise) rotation, push the forward /reverse switch to the left position.

  • For reverse (counterclockwise) rotation, push the forward/reverse switch to the right position. Although an interlock prevents reversing the tool while the motor is running, allow it to come to a full stop before reversing.

WARNING: If forward/reverse switch is on the central position, the tool can not be switched on.

Auxiliary Handle

An auxiliary handle is packed with the drill for ease of operation and to help prevent loss of control. The handle can be positioned and locked into any of 12 positions, 360° around the collar mount. It can also be mounted on the opposite side for left hand use.

To install the handle

  • Loosen the handle assembly by turning the handle counterclockwise.
  • Slide the handle assembly onto the collar mount.

Rotate the handle assembly to the desired operating position, then push the handle inward until it engages in the desired position.

  • Securely tighten the auxiliary by turning the handle clockwise.

To reposition the handle

  • Rotate the lower portion of auxiliary handle counter-clockwise.
  • Push the handle forward until it disengages from the locking teeth in the collar mount.
  • Move the handle to the desired position.
  • Push the handle inward until it engages in the desired position.
  • Securely tighten the auxiliary handle by rotating it clockwise.

Depth gauge

Change the position of the depth gauge, turn the grip of the handle anti- clockwise until the depth gauge is loose enough to slide in the hole. Set the depth, checking the depth with a steel ruler for most accurate measurement and then turn the handle grip clockwise to tighten both the depth gauge and the auxiliary handle in the required position.

Selecting the impact/drill mode

The impact/drill switch should be set according to the type of action required.

The tool has two settings

  • Drill mode: For drilling into wood and metal. Use standard drill bits.
  • Impact mode: For drilling into stone and masonry. Use masonry drill bits.
Adjusting speed

This tool has a variable speed trigger switch which can reach higher speed with increased trigger pressure. Speed is controlled by the pressure to the variable speed trigger switch. The variable speed feature is particularly useful when starting drilling. It also enables you to select the best speed for a particular application. To limit the maximum speed of the tool, rotate the variable speed dial until the desired setting is achieved. Turn the dial to the “+” direction to increase the speed and to the “-” direction to decrease the speed.

NOTICE: It is recommended to use the variable speed feature for a short time only. Do not continuously operate the tool at different speeds. It may damage the switch.

Start drilling

Start the tool by squeezing the variable speed trigger switch. Release the trigger to stop the tool. If you press the lock on button while the trigger switch is depressed, the switch is kept in the operating position. This is convenient when continuous operating for extended periods of time is required. To release the lock on button, press and release the trigger switch.

Hole drilling

When attempting to drill a large diameter hole, it is sometimes best to start with a smaller drill bit then work up to the required size. This prevents overloading the drill.

WARNING: Many accidents occur because of unforeseeable situations. Please pay attention that drilling-out a small hole may cause the drill bit to jam in the hole, especially when drilling metal.

Remember to use a “wood-pecker” action on deep holes to allow the swarf to be ejected from the hole. If the drill bit snags, switch off immediately to prevent permanent damage to the drill. Try running the drill in reverse to remove the bit. Keep the drill in line with the hole. Ideally, the drill bit should enter at right angles to the work. If the angle is changed during drilling, this could cause the bit to snap off blocking the hole and perhaps causing injury. Reduce pressure as the drill is about to break through the item being drilled. Don’t force the drill, let it work at its own pace. Keep the drill bit sharp.

Drilling wood

For maximum performance when drilling larger holes, use auger bits or spade bits for wood drilling. Set the tool to the drill mode. Begin drilling at a very low speed to prevent the bit from slipping off the starting point. Increase the speed as it bites into the wood. When drilling through holes, place a block of wood behind the work piece to prevent ragged or splintered edges on the back of the hole.

Drilling metal

  • For maximum performance, use HSS drill bits for metal drilling.
  • Set the tool to the drill mode.
  • Mark off the centre of the hole using a centre punch.
  • Use a suitable lubricant for the material you are working on.
  • Begin drilling at a very low speed to prevent the bit from slipping off the starting point.
  • Always clamp sheet metal. Support thin metal with a block of wood to avoid distorting it.

Drilling Masonry

  • For maximum performance, use high quality carbide-tipped masonry drill bits when drilling holes in brick, tile, concrete etc. Use the drilling setting initially then revert to the hammer action once the holes are established.
  • Apply light pressure and medium speed for best results in brick.
  • Apply additional pressure and high speed for hard materials such as concrete.
  • When drilling holes in tile, practice on a scrap piece to determine the best speed and pressure.

NOTE: Reverse rotation during impact drilling may damage the drill and drill bit.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

WARNING

  • Always disconnect the device before performing any adjustment or maintenance operation. if the replacement of the supply cord is necessary, this has to be done by the manufacturer or his agent in order to avoid a safety hazard.
  • Disconnect from the power supply immediately if the supply cord is damaged. Take care not to expose this tool to the rain.
  • If the carbon brushes need to be replaced, have this done by a qualified repair person (always replace the two brushes at the same time)

Cleaning

  • Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastic parts are susceptible to damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc.

Lubrication

  • All the bearings in this tool are lubricated with a sufficient amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions, therefore no further lubrication is required.
