HOW TO USE GRAB SAMPLERS

Grab samplers are vital to determining the health and pumping service of a grease interceptor. These devices let you take accurate readings on solids that have settled to the bottom of a grease interceptor tank.

Several designs are available. The Trapzilla Grab Sampler features a carrier that snugly holds a 1-liter jar that captures the sample. You lower it into a sampling port or main tank using a paint stick purchased separately at any home improvement store. Set the carrier to the correct angle by tightening the wing screw using a nut driver.

Another popular grab sampler is the Sludge Judge. It is available in 5-ft. sections of ¾-in. plastic pipe with screw-type fittings. The top section includes a nylon line for raising the sampler. Here is how to use one:

  • Lower the Sludge Judge to the bottom of the tank.
  • When you reach the bottom, and the pipe has filled to the surface level, tug slightly on the rope as you begin raising it from the water. The check valve sets, trapping the column of solids and liquid in the Sludge Judge. The unit holds approximately 3 oz per foot.
  • When you’ve lifted your Sludge Judge out of the water, read the number of solids in the sample using the 1-ft. increments marked on the pipe sections.
  • Release the material in the unit by touching the pin extending from the bottom section against a hard surface. The check valve opens and drains the sample.

Happy sampling!
