Happier Camper 2022 Coupler Travel Trailer
One of the most essential parts of travel trailer ownership is following a routine maintenance schedule. Because our trailers are built to last, routine maintenance will help ensure your trailer is safe on the road for years to come. Your maintenance schedule should be scheduled around an annual schedule and your travel plans. This guide can ensure your coupler stays in good shape. Though this guide covers the essentials of coupler maintenance, be sure to use your best judgment about maintaining your trailer and visit a mechanic regularly to keep things in tip-top shape.

COUPLER MAINTENANCE
Make sure pieces are not damaged, bent, or functioning improperly. On occasion, you may need to tighten or replace different coupler components to make sure you can tow safely. We have more information about replacing the threaded nut. You can replace the locking plate by unscrewing the threaded nut and inserting the locking plate in place. Make sure the angled pieces are facing down. You can see the angeled pieces of the locking plate in the image to the right.
THREADED NUT MAINTENANCE
In addition to the routine maintenance that should be done to your coupler and hitch, this guide outlines how to best replace the threaded nut underneath your coupler to promote safe towing conditions.
CHECKING THE NUT
It’s important to check your threaded nut, or locknut, on a routine basis but
at least once a year or before long trips. You want to ensure that the
threaded nut is secure, not damaged, and tight enough. When you lower the
coupler latch to lock onto your vehicle’s 2” ball, you should just barely be
able to wiggle the handle in its locked position. This indicates the hitch
coupler has a snug fit over the 2” ball. If the latch does not go down easily,
the nut may be too tight and we recommend loosening the nut a
quarter turn.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Threaded nylon nut
- Drive ratchet
- 3/4” socket
REPLACING THE NYLON LOCKNUT
You will use this guide to remove the locknut, or nut, that holds the bolt which secures the coupler latch in place. You’ll then replace it with a new nut. Which size nut you need to will depend on which generation of axle you have. To determine which nut will fit your camper, remove the current nut and compare it to the image on the right.
REPLACEMENT PROCESS AND TIPS
First, open the coupler latch then use a drive ratchet to remove the original nut from the coupler. Leave the latch open and move the new nut in place. Using the 3/4” socket, tighten the nut into the bolt that is secured to the open coupler. You want to ensure this piece is securely in place, but don’t overdo it by forcing it too tight as it can damage the nut.
