- Do not attempt to repair this appliance yourself.
- This appliance is not intended to be operated by means of an external timer or a separate remote-control system.
- Always check to ensure handles/legs are assembled and fastened properly. See instructions regarding handles on page 3.
- Periodically check the handles to ensure that they are completely tightened; they should feel secure and not wobble. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, AS STRIPPING OF THE SCREWS AND BREAKAGE OF THE HANDLE CAN OCCUR.
- A short, detachable power supply cord has been provided to reduce the risk of becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
- Longer extension cords are available, but care must be exercised in their use. While use of an extension cord is not recommended, if you must use one, ensure that the marked electrical rating of the extension cord is equal to or greater than that of the appliance. If the plug is of the grounded type, the extension cord must be a grounding-type 3-wire cord. To avoid pulling, tripping or entanglement, position the extension cord so that it does not hang over the edge of the counter, table or other area where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over.
- This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way.
- Do not use an outlet or extension cord if the plug fits loosely or if the outlet or extension cord feels hot.
- Do not use glass cover if chipped, cracked or has deep scratches. Weakened glass can shatter during use. Discard immediately!
- Glass is breakable. Care should be taken not to drop or impact the glass cover. If the cover breaks, it will do so in many pieces. Avoid or discard any foodstuffs exposed to broken cover.
- Be extremely cautious of steam when removing cover. Lift cover slowly, directing steam away from you.
- Do not set hot cover on cold or wet surface; let cover cool before placing in water. Sudden temperature change may cause the cover to crack or shatter.
- Set cover on hot pad, trivet or other heat protective surface. Do not set hot cover directly on the counter, table or other surface.
- Do not place glass cover with metal ring in the microwave oven.
- Do not set glass cover on oven burner or oven heat vent. Sudden temperature changes may cause the cover to shatter.
- For household use only.
BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Wash the skillet and cover in hot soapy water; rinse thoroughly and dry, including the terminal pins inside the socket of the skillet where the temperature control fits.
If your skillet handle is not assembled to the lid, follow these instructions. The hardware needed for attachment of the handle to the lid may be packed in a small plastic bag or within the handle itself. Align the handle with the hole in the lid, and then secure with the screw assembly in the order shown above. DO NOT over tighten.
USING YOUR ELECTRIC SKILLET
- Place appliance on dry, level, heat-resistant surface, away from any edge. NOTE: Do not block airflow under the skillet. If you wish to aid grease draining, open the tilt leg into position before preheating, to allow grease to flow to one side of the skillet.
- With the temperature control dial set in the “OFF” position, attach it to the skillet. Plug the cord into a 120 volt, AC electric outlet only. Do not use any temperature control other than that which came with your skillet.
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, for 2 to 4 minutes or until the desired temperature is reached, unless the recipe states not to preheat. The signal light on temperature control will be illuminated while the skillet is heating.
- Refer to the “Temperature Guide” in this booklet for selecting the correct heat setting. If the food is frozen, use the heat setting indicated, but allow for longer cooking times.
- When the cooking temperature has been reached, the signal light will go out. Add food. The temperature may be increased or decreased depending upon personal preference and the type or amount of food being prepared. The signal light will cycle on and off during cooking to indicate that the proper temperature is being maintained.
- At the end of the cooking period, set the temperature control at “WARM” for serving, or “OFF” if the food will be removed immediately from the skillet. After the dial is set at “OFF,” unplug the cord from the wall outlet.
A small amount of smoke and/or odor may occur upon heating due to the release of manufacturing oils – this is normal.
Some minor expansion/contraction sounds may occur during heating and cooling
This is normal.
HELPFUL HINTS
Foods may be prepared with or without butter, shortening or oil. When frying, using a small amount of fat will improve the flavor, color and/or crispness of meat, fish, poultry and eggs. This skillet is not designed to deep fry. Never use more than one cup of vegetable or peanut oil for shallow pan-frying. Meat may be cooked in its own juices if the skillet is covered and the temperature control is set at “SIMMER.”
Plastic, rubber and wooden cooking tools are recommended for use on the non- stick surface. Smooth-edged metal cooking tools may be used with care. However, do not use sharp-edged metal (forks, knives, mashers, beaters, or food choppers) as scratching may occur. Never cut foods directly in the skillet, this will scratch the nonstick finish. Minor scratching will affect only the appearance of the surface; it will not harm its non-stick property or the food prepared in the skillet.

TEMPERATURE GUIDE
The temperature guide on the temperature control represents the average temperature sustained. Actual temperatures will vary during operation as the thermostat cycles and can also be affected by environmental factors such as adding food or removing the cover. We advise using food thermometers to verify that food-safe temperatures have been reached in cooked foods.
ROASTING GUIDE
Beef, pork, lamb, veal and poultry can be roasted in the skillet. To obtain more satisfactory results, a metal wire rack can be used to lift the food off of the cooking surface. A rack is not included with this skillet. However, a metal wire rack that fits into the bottom of the skillet and is about ½-inch high with smooth support legs can be used. Follow these basic guidelines for roasting:
- To help seal in natural juices, roasts should be browned in the skillet before roasting. Simply preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 325°F/162°C and add the roast. Brown as desired on all sides. After the roast is browned, lay it in the skillet with the fat side up. Season as desired.
- Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of roast, making sure that it does not touch a bone or rest in fat. Cover the skillet and roast at 250°F/120°C. If the spattering of juices becomes excessive during the roasting period, reduce the temperature setting to “SIMMER.” A small amount, no more than ½ cup, of water may be added, if desired.
- Roast meat to the recommended internal temperature, see the Roasting Guide. Turn the temperature control to “OFF.” Avoid removing the cover too frequently while roasting, as this will lengthen the cooking time. Remove the roast from the skillet and let to stand for 10 minutes. Always use hot pads to remove the lid and roast. The juices in the skillet may be used for gravy, if desired.
CLEANING YOUR ELECTRIC SKILLET
- Clean the skillet thoroughly after each use. Do not immerse the skillet in cold water when it is hot. Let the skillet cool completely, and then remove the temperature control. Immerse the skillet in hot, soapy water. Wipe the temperature control with a damp cloth if necessary. DO NOT immerse the temperature control or cord in water or any other liquid.
- Clean the non-stick surface of the skillet with hot, soapy water, using a non-metallic or nylon scrubber. A dishcloth or sponge may give the non-stick surface a clean look, but will not remove the tiny food particles that can settle in the finish. Do not use metal scouring pads or harsh scouring powders.
- Clean the non-coated aluminum underside of the skillet with hot, soapy water and a soap-filled steel wool scouring pad. Remove stains with a household cleanser. Remove burned-on grease with any cleanser made especially for appliances.
- After washing, rinse the skillet thoroughly with hot water and dry completely, including the terminal pins inside the socket of the skillet where the temperature control fits.
- Your skillet, with the temperature control removed, may be cleaned in an automatic dishwasher. DO NOT put the temperature control in the dishwasher. The underside of the skillet may discolor due to the minerals in water and the high heat of the drying cycle. This will not affect the cooking ability of skillet.
SPECIAL CARE
- A spotted white film may form on the non-stick surface. This is a buildup of minerals from foods or water and is not a defect in the surface. To remove, soak a soft cloth in lemon juice or vinegar and rub on the finish. Wash the non-stick surface thoroughly, rinse and dry.
- The non-stick surface may also become stained from improper cleaning or overheating. To remove stains, clean the non-stick surface by the following method. Combine 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of ONE of the following cleaners: coffee pot detainer, automatic dishwasher detergent or dry oxygen bleach crystals. USE ONLY ONE OF THE ABOVE CLEANERS; DO NOT COMBINE. Do not tilt the skillet with the tilt leg. Preheat the skillet to 225F. Wearing rubber gloves, dip a sponge into the cleaning solution and wipe over the surface.
- Continue cleaning procedure until mixture is gone. Turn the skillet to “OFF” and allow it to cool. Remove the temperature control. Scour the non-stick surface with hot, soapy water and a non-metallic or nylon scouring pad. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
This appliance has no user serviceable parts.
RECIPES
SAUSAGE LINKS
Place the links in the cold skillet and add a small amount of water. Cover,
and set the temperature to “SIMMER” for 10 minutes. Do not prick. After ten
minutes, turn heat up to 300ºF/150ºC and pan-fry until browned, about 15 to 20
minutes.
BACON
Place bacon slices in the cold skillet. Heat at 300ºF/150ºC. Fry the first
side for about 7 to 8 minutes. Turn the slices and fry for about 4 to 5
minutes longer, or until the bacon is crisp. Drain on absorbent paper.
EGGS BAKED IN BEEF HASH
Spread one 1-pound 9¼-ounce can of corned beef, roast hash, or any homemade
variety in lightly greased skillet. Using the bottom of a custard cup, make 6
deep wells in the hash. Dot with butter or margarine. Break an egg into each
well and season with salt and pepper. Cover each egg with 1 tbsp. milk or
cream, cover, and turn temperature control to 250°F/120°C. Bake for 15 to 20
minutes, or until set. Serve from the skillet, keeping hot at “WARM.”
CHEESE-TOMATO SCRAMBLE
- ¼ cup butter or margarine 10 to 12 eggs, well beaten 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 2 large tomatoes, peeled and diced 4 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. pepper
- Preheat the skillet at 250ºF/120ºC. Add butter or margarine; heat until it sizzles. Beat the eggs well in a mixing bowl, add sour cream and stir to combine. Pour the egg mixture into skillet.
- When the eggs begin to set, add cheese, tomatoes, onions, salt, and pepper. Stir until the eggs are completely set and the cheese is melted. Reduce the heat to “WARM” for serving.
EGG AND BEEF SCRAMBLE
- 2 tbsp. butter or margarine
- 1 3½-ounce package dried beef 6 eggs, slightly beaten
- ⅛ tsp. pepper
- 3 tbsp. milk or cream
- 1 3-ounce package cream cheese, softened
- Preheat the skillet at 250°F/120°C. Melt butter or margarine.
- Cut or tear beef into bite-size pieces. Sauté in butter 3 to 4 minutes until lightly browned. Reduce heat to “SIMMER.”
- Combine eggs with pepper, milk, and cream cheese. Pour the mixture into the skillet and slowly cook until the cheese is melted and the eggs are thoroughly cooked, but are still moist and glossy, about 6 to 8 minutes.
CHICKEN WITH RICE
- 3 -3½ pounds frying chicken, cut into pieces
- ¼ cup butter or margarine
- 1½ cups instant rice
- 1 10½-ounce can condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp. instant chicken flavored bouillon crystals or 1 chicken bouillon cube
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 325ºF/162ºC. Add the butter or margarine and allow to melt. Place the chicken pieces into the skillet and brown on both sides. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the chicken from skillet.
- Reduce the heat to “SIMMER” and add rice. Combine soup, water and bouillon. Pour ½ of the mixture over the rice. Replace the chicken pieces into the skillet over the rice. Pour the remaining soup mixture over the chicken. Cover and “SIMMER” 35 to 40 minutes or until chicken is done. Reduce the heat to “WARM” for serving.
PAN-FRIED FISH
- 1½ – 2 pounds fish fillets 1 egg, slightly beaten ½ cup milk
- ½ cup flour, cornmeal or cracker crumbs Salt and pepper
- ¼ cup butter or margarine
- Wash the fish and pat dry with paper toweling. Cut into serving-size pieces.
- In small bowl, combine the egg with milk. Dip the fish in to the mixture and coat with flour, cornmeal or cracker crumbs. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 325ºF/162ºC. Melt butter or margarine. Place the coated fish fillets in the skillet.
- Fry the fish until golden brown, about 6 to 8 minutes. Turn the fish only once.
SWISS STEAK
- 2 tbsp. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. pepper
- 2 pounds round steak, 1-inch thick 1 tbsp. shortening
- ½ cup minced onion
- ½ cup finely chopped celery
- ½ cup finely chopped green pepper 1 cup canned tomatoes, undrained 2 cups water
- Combine flour with salt and pepper. Pound the mixture thoroughly into both sides of the steak. Cut into serving-size pieces.
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 375ºF/190ºC. Melt shortening. Brown the steak for 5 minutes per side.
- Combine the vegetables and water and pour over the steak. Cover, reduce heat to “SIMMER” and simmer until tender, about 1 to 1½ hours. Reduce the heat to “WARM” for serving.
SCALLOPED POTATOES
- 4 cups peeled, diced potatoes ½ cup minced onion
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1½ cups milk
- ½ cup grated cheddar cheese ¼ cup cracker or bread crumbs Dash of pepper
- Combine potatoes with onion, salt and milk in skillet. Cook covered, at “SIMMER,” for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tender.
- Sprinkle cheese, pepper and crumbs over top. Continue cooking, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce to “WARM” for serving.
SKILLET POT ROAST
- 3-4 pound chuck or blade roast ½ tsp. seasoned salt
- ½ tsp. seasoned pepper
- 1 1⅜-ounce envelope dry onion soup mix or 1 thinly sliced onion
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 325ºF/162ºC. Brown the roast for 5 minutes per side.
- Reduce heat to “SIMMER.” Sprinkle the roast with seasoned salt and pepper. Add the soup mix or onion. Roast, covered, for about 2 to 2½ hours. Turn after 1 hour. Vegetables such as quartered potatoes or cut carrots may be added at this time. The juices that accumulate may be used for gravy.
CHOW MEIN
- 1 pound ground lean fresh pork 2 cups diagonally sliced celery ½ cup chopped onion
- 1 tsp. seasoned salt
- 1 tbsp. brown sugar
- ¼ tsp. pepper
- ¼ cup mushroom liquid
- 1 tbsp. flour
- 1 cup milk
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 1-pound can bean sprouts or Oriental vegetables, drained
- 1 4-ounce can mushroom stems and pieces, drained (reserve liquid)
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 325ºF/162ºC. Add ground pork, celery and onion. Stir gently and fry until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove excess grease.
- Add salt, brown sugar, pepper and reserved mushroom liquid. Stir to combine. Cover, reduce heat to “SIMMER” and cook for 20 minutes.
- Stir in the flour. Increase the heat to 250°F/120°C. Gradually add the milk and stir until thickened.
- Add soy sauce, bean sprouts or Oriental vegetables, and mushrooms. Stir to combine. Heat until hot, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to “WARM” for serving. Serve with rice or chow mein noodles.
SKILLET COOKIES
- 2 tbsp. butter or margarine
- 1 cup pitted dates, cut into small pieces 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3 cups oven-toasted rice cereal ½ cup chopped nuts
- Flaked coconut
- Preheat the skillet, uncovered, at 250ºF/120ºC. Melt the butter or margarine and add the dates, sugar and eggs.
- Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until the mixture forms a ball, between 15 and 18 minutes. Cool slightly.
- Stir in cereal and nuts. Combine thoroughly.
- Divide the mixture into two equal portions, shape into a roll 2 inches in diameter. Roll in flaked coconut and wrap in waxed paper. Refrigerate.
- To serve, cut into slices about ¼-inch thick.

West Bend® (“the Company”) warrants this appliance from failures in the material and workmanship for one (1) year from the date of original purchase with proof of purchase, provided that the appliance is operated and maintained in conformity with the Instruction Manual. Frequently Asked Questions
Can you entirely submerge it?****
The skillet, cover, and rack may all be cleaned in an automated dishwasher with the heat control removed. The non-coated aluminium surfaces of the skillet’s inside and bottom, however, will turn darker. This occurs when detergent, the intense heat of the drying cycle, and water-purifying chemicals interact with the minerals in the water. Place the skillet and cover separately in the dishwasher, apart from other items being cleaned. After every dishwasher cycle, the skillet’s non-stick surface needs to be reconditioned with cooking oil.
How much cord is there?****
The 32-inch power cord is lengthened.
What is the product’s warranty?****
This device has a one-year warranty starting on the date of purchase.
How many can fit?****
7 qt. I adore the 3″ depth of this lovely skillet. This electric skillet is a sure winner!
Should this unit be seasoned?****
The SKWB12GY13 skillet does indeed require conditioning. To ensure stick-free cooking, the non-stick surface needs to be condition. With a paper towel or soft cloth, lightly wipe a spoonful of cooking oil over the entire surface. Now that the skillet is ready, use it.
How much watts is it?****
1300 Watts are contained in the West Bend model number SKYWB12GY13.
Is the heating element circular or another shape?****
This particular type has a rounded heating element.
Is the thermostat’s tip burned-looking?****
The fact that the tip is welded makes it appear scorched.
What is the lowest temperature—that which is warm—when turned on?****
It is low and excellent for thawing meats; however I have never used a thermometer on it.
What caused my electric skillet to malfunction?****
Perhaps the heating element is damaged. On detachable cords, the termination pins could be broken. The thermostat could be broken. It’s possible that internal wiring has shorted out.
