A GUIDE TO
AIR QUALITY FOR
Introduction to Air Quality
Air quality is a crucial aspect of public health and comfort, especially in high-traffic environments like transport hubs. The cleanliness of the air we breathe affects overall well-being, productivity, and satisfaction. Poor air quality can lead to various health issues, including respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and worsening of existing health conditions. In transport hubs, where large numbers of people converge, maintaining high air quality is essential for a safe and pleasant environment.
Transport Hubs as Air Pollution Hotspots
Transport hubs, including railway stations, bus terminals, and airports, are known for their elevated levels of air pollution. These areas often experience heavy vehicular traffic, high footfall, and a mix of indoor and outdoor environments, all contributing to deteriorating air quality.
Elevated Pollutant Levels
Traffic Emissions: Transport hubs are major sources of local air
pollution due to emissions from diesel engines and other vehicles. Nitrogen
oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM2.5), and other pollutants are prevalent
in these environments.
Indoor Pollution: Inside these hubs, air quality can be compromised by
poor ventilation, accumulation of contaminants, and insufficient air
filtration systems. This issue is exacerbated in enclosed or semi-enclosed
spaces, where pollutants can accumulate.
Top Tip!
PM 2.5 Indoor Air Quality Monitors can help you identify whether you have an
air quality problem within your transport hub!
Facts About Air Quality in Transport Hubs
High Pollution Levels:
Transport hubs often have significantly higher pollutant concentrations
compared to other environments. Diesel engines release pollutants that
contribute to poor air quality.
High Pollution Levels:
Transport hubs often have significantly higher pollutant concentrations
compared to other environments. Diesel engines release pollutants that
contribute to poor air quality.
Regulatory Gaps:
Indoor air quality in transport hubs is less regulated compared to outdoor
environments, potentially leading to health risks for passengers and staff.

Indoor Air Quality Facts
High Contaminant Levels:
Indoor environments in transport hubs, such as waiting areas, washrooms, and
dining areas, often have high levels of contaminants, including dust,
bacteria, and odours.
Poor Ventilation:
Many transport hubs suffer from inadequate ventilation, which contributes to
the accumulation of indoor pollutants and poor air quality.
Health Implications:
Poor indoor air quality can exacerbate respiratory issues and negatively
impact overall health, leading to discomfort and dissatisfaction among
passengers.

Identifying Problems in Transport Hubs
Transport hubs experience heavy foot traffic and frequent use, which can strain hygiene standards and contribute to a range of issues:
- Odour Problems: Areas such as washrooms, waiting rooms, and dining spaces can develop unpleasant odours due to high usage and insufficient cleaning. These odours detract from the overall experience and can lead to negative customer perceptions.
- Contaminant Build-Up: High traffic areas can accumulate contaminants rapidly, requiring frequent and intensive cleaning efforts to maintain a sanitary environment.
- Customer Satisfaction: Poor air quality and persistent odors can lead to lower customer satisfaction, affecting the reputation of the transport hub and its operational efficiency.
The Growing Importance of Sustainability in Transport Hubs
Sustainability has become increasingly crucial in the operation of transport hubs. The need to reduce environmental impact, lower energy consumption, and enhance operational efficiency is driving the adoption of more sustainable practices. Here’s why it’s important:
- Environmental Impact: Reducing pollution and energy consumption aligns with broader environmental goals and regulations aimed at mitigating climate change.
- Operational Efficiency: Sustainable practices can lead to cost savings, reduced maintenance needs, and improved system performance.
- Passenger Expectations : Modern travellers are increasingly concerned with sustainability and expect transport hubs to reflect these values.

Heathrow’s Solution to Odour-Free Spaces
Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s busiest international airports, welcomes
millions of passengers annually, connecting people and cultures from around
the globe. Terminal 3, a hub for numerous international airlines, caters to a
vast number of travelers and visitors every day, making it a bustling center
of activity.
Addressing the Problem
Despite maintaining a rigorous and constant cleaning regime, Terminal 3’s
washrooms faced an ongoing challenge – persistent odour problems that seemed
impossible to tackle. Even with the use of various fragrance units, the high
volume of daily visitors, which reached up to 35,000 people, posed a unique
and demanding challenge.
Finding the Solution
In search of an effective and lasting solution, the management at Terminal 3
collaborated with Biozone Scientific to explore possibilities. Upon a visit
from a Biozone Scientific representative, the decision was made to try out our
Air Care units, renowned for their odor neutralising capabilities.
Results and Analysis
Working closely with the client, Biozone Scientific installed Air Care
units in ten selected washrooms at Terminal 3, initiating a 30-day trial
period. After a suitable period of operation, inspections were conducted on
the washroom facilities. The outcome was remarkable – the Air Care units had
effectively eradicated the persistent odour problems and replaced them with a
fresh, pleasant washroom atmosphere.
The success of the Air Care units brought about numerous benefits:
- Odour Neutralisation: The units completely removed odours, significantly improving the washroom environment.
- Enhanced Ambience: Visitors now experience a more pleasant and inviting atmosphere.
- Healthier Environment: The Air Care units created a healthier space for both the cleaning staff and the public.
- Cost-Effective: Air Care units proved to be a cost-effective and efficient solution.

Letter from Chris Moore, Facilities Manager at Terminal 3 of London Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow is the third busiest airport in the world, servicing approximately 70 million annual passengers, or 200,000 per day. Terminal 3, which was built in 1961, services approximately 20 million passengers annually, or roughly one-third of all of the flow through Heathrow.
I have been involved with BSG’s AIRCARE equipment in Terminal 3 since the range’s initial trial and continuing through the full deployment throughout all washrooms in the terminal. The AIRCARE units over time neutralize the lingering smell that can sometimes be found within the toilet block and supplement our vigorous cleaning regime extremely well. Their effect is most noticeable upon entering a facility after the nightly downtime. Any inspection after they have ‘rested’ will result in a neutral almost static smell, a great blank canvas for the day ahead.
AIRCARE also neutralizes airborne bacteria and I can confirm that there have not been any reports of illness due to the condition of our toilets since AIRCARE has been installed. The AIRCARE units have been wired in to fused spurs for permanent installations and they run 24/7. The devices are still installed, have been in continuous use, and have been faultless in their reliability.
The units are subjected to a simple weekly end cap clean which is undertaken by our cleaning operatives. The UV bulbs in the units are replaced on an annual schedule, and other than the aforementioned there is no additional maintenance required.
We have also used the AIRCARE product back of house in the service voids to
keep any unpleasant aromas at bay, thus preventing them from entering the
public domain if the access door is opened. This is especially useful for some
of our older facilities.
I hope this insight into the product proves helpful.
