Walk where you can, when you can
Having to walk 5km or more every day for water means girls across the world
are missing out on vital education, taking away their hopes for the future.
Show solidarity and raise funds by walking 155km over the month to help ensure
that no woman or girl is held back by a lack of clean water.
1 in 10 of us around the world don’t have access to clean water close to home.
Millions of women and girls must make difficult journeys every single day to
fetch the water they and their families need to survive. Stand with women and
girls globally by taking on our Walk for Water Challenge this March. Join us
and walk where you can, when you can.
Water themed walks
Why not give your walks a watery theme with strolls by rivers, around lakes or
along canals? You can check out your local water company’s website for ideas.
Don’t forget you can track your walks on the Strava app to see how far you’ve
walked. You can also join the official Walk for Water Facebook and Strava
groups too, so you can meet the Walk for Water community, share inspiration
for your walks and fundraising tips and advice. If you have any questions or
need further support, please contact us at walkforwater@wateraid.org
Blue laces
We’ll send anyone who raises at least £5 through JustGiving a pair of blue
laces to wear with pride while walking. Share your walk and a pic of your
shoes on social media using #walkforwater to raise even more awareness and
sponsorship for your challenge.
The best way to record your walks and inspire friends, family and colleagues
to sponsor you is to make use of your JustGiving Page.
Our top tips
Make it personal
You’ll raise more if you update your page with a photo and a few words about
why you’re taking part in Walk for Water.
Spread the word
Post your fundraising link on social and send it to all your friends and
family. Add it to your email sign off too, share it every way you can. Keep
your sponsors up to date on your highs and lows with regular updates. There’s
no
need to go it alone.
In it together
If you’re teaming up with others to take on the challenge, you can set up a
team and ask them to create their own fundraising page to show your collective
efforts.
Track your challenge
Link your Strava account to your JustGiving fundraising page and it will
automatically update all your distances. You can also add them manually.
Top up with some extra fundraising
· To take things to the next level, you could carry a container filled with
water on one or more of your walks, like Betsy did. She walked 2km, the
average distance young girls around the world trek when collecting water, all
with a bucket of water on her head. She absolutely knocked her £200
fundraising target out of the park!
· Create a playlist for your walks and ask friends and family to donate to add
a song or podcast to listen to during your walks.
· During March organise a fundraiser such as a pub quiz night, dinner party or
games night and ask people to donate to take part.
· Does your birthday happen to be in March? Ask friends and family to donate
in lieu of a present!
For 1 in 10 people around the world, getting a drink of water isn’t as simple
as turning on a tap. They have no choice but to make long, tiring, and often
dangerous journeys to remote water sources.
Climate change is water change, and makes life harder for communities facing
unpredictable weather patterns. Together we can make clean water normal and
change lives for good by building climate-resilient solutions.
Walk for girls like Novia, Sandra & Shama
Walk for girls like Sandra and Novia who live with their parents at the top of
a rugged and steep mountain in Maumeta Liquiçá, Timor-Leste. During the rainy
season, Sandra and Novia collected water from a big rain tank provided for the
village. In the dry season they would wake up at 3am and travel to the river
to collect water before school. Their arms got tired from carrying two jerry
cans. It was dark when the girls would walk to the river in the morning and
most mornings the girls were late to school.
Shama
Novia & Sandra, Liquica, Timor-Leste
Novia & Sandra
Walk for women like Shama, who was forced to live in a roadside shelter in the
district of Badin, Pakistan, following the unprecedented floods. Shama and her
family had no access to clean water due to the flooding which destroyed their
home. Shama walked every day to collect drinking water, for everything else
washing up, bathing and laundry – dirty floodwater was their only option.
Shama, Badin, Sindh Province, Pakistan
When you Walk for Water, you’re helping make sure that women and girls like
Novia, Sandra & Shama don’t have to.
