VOX EFGSCJ 1 Smooth Impact Effect Pedal

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the SMOOTH IMPACT effect pedal by VOX. To help you get the most out of your purchase, please read this manual carefully.
About Nutube
Nutube is a new vacuum tube developed by KORG INC. and Noritake Itron Corporation, which utilizes technology from vacuum fluorescent displays. As with conventional vacuum tubes, the Nutube is constructed with an anode, grid and filament, and operates as a complete triode tube. Furthermore, it generates the same response and the same rich harmonic characteristics of conventional vacuum tubes. If a strong impact is applied to this unit, noise at the high-frequency range may be output. This is due to the structure of the Nutube and is not a malfunction.

Main features

  • The SMOOTH IMPACT effect pedal is a true vacuum tube-type compressor that makes use of the changes in gain that occur due to fluctuations in the power voltage of the Nutube.
  • You can increase the TUBE GAIN to add characteristic vacuum tube overtones to the sound.
  • This effect pedal features the new Nutube vacuum tube, which adds a colorful richness to your sound.
  • It was developed through a wide range of research efforts and countless hours of trial and error, sup-plementing our long years of analog engineering
  • expertise in developing amps and effects. All of this maximizes the uniquely responsive and rich overtones of the vacuum tube sound that so many guitarists find appealing.

Part names and functions

  1. IN (INPUT) jack: Connect the guitar cable here. This jack also functions as a power switch. When you’re not using this unit, unplug the cable from the input jack.

  2. OUT (OUTPUT) jack : Connect this jack to a guitar amp, effect pedal, or other device.

  3. Effect switch: Press the effect switch to switch between the effect sound (the indicator is lit) and the bypass sound (the indicator is unlit).

  4. Display: This unit features an oscilloscope function, which shows the waveform’s characteristics as it passes through the Nutube circuit. When the unit is in SELECT DISPLAY mode, you can also select other display modes or select
    DISPLAY OFF mode.
How to enter SELECT DISPLAY mode : With the unit turned off, insert a plug into the INPUT jack while holding down the effect switch to turn on the power. Once the indicator lights up, release the effect switch. After “SELECT DISPLAY” appears in the display, the unit switches to SELECT DISPLAY mode.
The display mode status is initialized if you keep holding down the effect switch without releasing it. When “INITIALIZED!” appears, turn the power off and then back on again without pressing anything
Pressing the effect switch shows the next mode. If you want a selected mode to be automatically used when you turn on the power, long-press the effect switch on the mode screen you want to save. To make the unit use normal mode when turned on, turn the power off and then back on again without pressing anything. You can choose from three types of display modes.

  5. DISP OFF: Turns the display off.

  6. MODE1: Shows the amount of gain reduction.

  7. MODE2: Shows the waveform as a series of bars.

  8. LINK jack : This jack lets you use a commercially available 3.5 mm mini-phone cable to connect to another VOX effect pedal that also has a LINK jack. When multiple pedals are connected, turning one effect pedal on bypasses the other pedals (link function). Use this function as a simple switcher between other effect pedals in this series.
You can connect up to five units. Do not connect any more than this. If you want to connect multiple units, use a commercially available splitter cable (you can also use a stereo headphone splitter cable). However, you cannot use a splitter cable that divides stereo into L and R.
Do not make connections using a cable that has a built-in resistor. Doing so might cause malfunctions

  9. DC 9V jack: Connect an AC adapter (9 V 600 mA or greater, sold separately) here. Since this effect pedal requires high current consumption, we recommend that you use the AC adapter.

  10. COMP knob: Adjusts the amount of compression. This interacts with the TUBE GAIN to let you adjust the texture of the compression.

  11. TUBE GAIN knob: Adjusts the volume of signal sent to the Nutube. Raising this level adds distortion to the Nutube.

  12. Mode switch: Select one of three modes. VTG (Vintage): Sets a rapid compressor attack time and a slow release time. This mode gives a high degree of compression since compression is applied from the attack phase.NAT (Natural): Sets a slow compressor attack time and a fast release time. This mode gives a natural nuance, as compression is applied without losing the attack. SAG (Sagging): This mode offers the natural compression and distortion that you get when playing through a vacuum tube power amp. This is optimal when used in combination with a solid-state amp, for playing with a light touch.

  13. OUTPUT knob: Adjusts the output volume

Installing the battery

  1. Open the battery cover located on the bottom of the unit.
  2. Attach the battery to the battery clip, ensuring that the polarity is correct.
  3. install the battery and close the battery cover

When the battery runs low, the display indicates “LOW BATT”. Install a new battery as soon as possi-ble. When the battery is completely depleted, the display goes dark and the sound is no longer output.

  • Turn off the power before installing a battery.
  • Remove the battery from the unit immediately if it is depleted. Leaving a depleted battery in the unit might damage the unit (due to battery leakage or other causes). The battery should also be removed if you won’t be using the unit for an extended period of time.
  • A battery is not included. You must purchase a commercially available 9 V alkaline battery (6LF22/6LR61).

Setup

Turn off any equipment that’s connected to this device.

  1. Set the OUTPUT knob to the minimum level.
  2. Connect the cable from your guitar or other instrument to the INPUT jack.
  3. Connect the cable from the OUTPUT jack to your effect pedal, guitar amp or other equipment.
  4. Turn on the externally connected equipment.
  5. Press the effect switch, and use the OUTPUT knob to adjust the overall volume that’s output from the OUTPUT jack.
  6. Use the various knobs and switches to adjust the tone

When using an optional AC adapter

If you want to supply power from an AC adapter, connect a separately sold AC adapter (9 V, , 600 mA or greater) to the DC 9V jack.

Using a different AC adapter may cause a malfunction

FAQs

  • Q: Why do I hear noise at high frequencies when a strong impact is applied?
  • A: The noise is due to the structure of the Nutube and is not a malfunction. It is a characteristic of the tube technology used in the effect pedal.
